She was smart, she was beautiful, with no more than a nodding acquaintance with the truth. But was she worth dying for? There were plenty of things hardened ex-cavalryman Neil Bancroft would rather do than hire out to escort the conniving Katie Burke across the prairies of Wyoming and into the rough mining towns of Dakota. It was clear the woman was poison, but he needed the money. In 1881 things were settling down with the Sioux, but Neil knew the dangers from the bands of young braves who sneaked off the reservation looking for adventure. He figured it shouldn’t take more than a few days to get from Fort Fetterman to Custer City, where he could be rid of her. He soon realized, though, there were things he hadn’t allowed for, like being shot, nearly getting hanged, encountering thieves and murderers—not to mention falling in love. Dakota Trails is a fast-paced, thrilling, and sometimes comic tale that delivers the reader into the heart of the American West. It captures with intimate detail the hardships and pleasures of day-to-day life in a harsh, untamed, yet beautiful land.

Review "Dakota Trails has as its protagonist a real person from history, Neil Bancroft, who was one of the survivors of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Bancroft is an interesting historical figure because he did not show up to receive his Medal of Honor for bravery during that fight. In this novel, which is fiction, Neil Bancroft hits the trail with an intriguing woman named Katie Burke, who has gold to recover in the Dakota Territory. Although this is McKee’s first published novel, he has published fiction for many years and has won several nice awards. His command as a fiction writer is evident in Dakota Trails, as it is a lively story full of action and suspense, historical detail, and a strong sense of place. The novel has original characters, sharp dialogue, and a clear writing style. We may look forward to more good western/historical novels by this author." Reviewed by John D. Nesbitt, Spur Award-winning author of "Dark Prairie" and "Justice at Redwillow""Set in 1881 on the dusty, lawless plains of Wyoming and into the even more lawless Black Hills of the Dakotas, Dakota Trails follows the exploits of Neil Bancroft, a retired cavalry man who keeps his army days to himself, and Katie Burke, the woman who hired him to help her find her dead husband’s lost gold. Neil is busting broncos in Fetterman City, Wyoming, when he meets the beautiful Katie Burke in the most unlikely manner: She puts up a twenty gold piece to any man who can beat Bancroft to a pulp. It is a test; she needs to see if Neil is crafty enough to help her elude the men who killed her husband and get her across the plains, where Indian threats still remain. As they cross the trails into the Dakotas, Neil slowly falls in love with Katie – and vice versa, but the deeper in love he falls, the more about her past he realizes he doesn’t know. And Katie’s past is not what she’s been leading him to believe it is. Despite being shot at, nearly hanged, and beaten to a pulp, Neil follows Katie into chaos and rescues her from death.Robert McKee weaves a thrilling Western that keeps the reader guessing, and the pace drives readers through to the end before they know it. I’m not personally partial to the Western genre, but I could not put this book down. Neil and Katie are dynamic and fun characters, and along the way the people they encounter truly bring the Wild West alive in a historically accurate way. Dakota Trails is a wonderful blend of Western, mystery, and romance." Reviewed by Historical Novel Society

I find myself bonding with the well-wrought characters and reconfirming the often observed reality that a character’s strongest virtues can be a challenge to them with life’s complexity and chaotic events. Neil’s heroic curiosity, Katy’s intelligence and will-power, Rafael’s passionate impulses, and the multiple selfish and murderous villains in this book compel my attention as do the historic references. Living in Wyoming, I have always been intrigued by the “Wild West” so the setting of 1881 Wyoming and Dakota Territory is also irresistible with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Fort Fetterman, cattlemen and sheep “farmers” fighting, and Black Hills gold rush towns all retelling their stories along with some surprising appearances by historic personalities. My friend has mastered his art by polishing each word and concept in the telling of his short stories and it is a real joy to see him to see him tell a longer story that I am sure will be enjoyed by any reader and recognized by qualified critics as a real contribution to story-telling.

The characters are not complex, but thoroughly lovable, and the plot is well crafted. I love the story and the hero and heroine. I mostly love the strict devotion to the geography. Fellow Google Earth fans should zoom in on Fort Fetterman, Box and Lightning Creeks, Custer City, Deadwood, and note how accurate McKee's descriptions still are. I'm not sure how accurate the depiction of Buffalo Bill, but he sure was a fun part of the plot! I strongly recommend this book to anybody who loves a good Western yarn and who loves to zoom in on Google Earth.Charles Morgan
