From the people who brought you the bestselling Confessions of a GP.
After sixteen years of high-pressure nursing, Michael Alexander has traded in his hospital uniform for the fresh air, comfort and routine of an International private school in the French Alps. Bliss! But it’s not long before he discovers that school nursing is not all permission slips, sniffles and gift baskets. Disastrous school trips; after hours dorm sleepovers; awkward sex education classes; culture clashes; swine flu panic; and kids with six-figure bank balances and a taste for bribery. This is nursing as you’ve never seen it before.
What goes on behind the gates of one of the world’s most elite boarding schools? What happens when kids from all over the world – Russia, Africa, America, Saudi Arabia – live, learn and grow under one roof? What happens when it’s left to school staff to teach children the facts of life, and lust?
Following on from the hugely successful Confessions of a Male Nurse, Michael Alexander is back with more touching, shocking and often laugh-out-loud funny tales of nursing. In Confessions of a School Nurse, Alexander tells all on boarding school life – as a nurse, parent, and Average Joe, he offers a unique perspective on this strange world.

I thought the incidences were typical of kids and not at all worth writing about. There are a few good remarks from the kids but not really entertaining at all.

Interesting read By Em Dee One of my good friends decided to take a year "off" from her stressful nursing job in a hospital burn center to work as a school nurse (coincidentally at a boarding school, like the author), and unfortunately for her it didn't turn out to be quite the respite she expected. Confessions of a School Nurse is a well-written, quick and easy read that definitely gave me a better understanding of why I'd get 3am texts from my friend counting down the days till she returned to the burn center. The author provides insight on a variety of topics and discusses everything from healthcare policy issues to stranger-than-fiction stories from the front lines. As such, it kind of jumped around a bit, but it seemed to work in this case since he always managed to weave everything together nicely. Although I think this book has a lot of general appeal and I wouldn't consider it a niche read by any means, I definitely think it would be particularly interesting for anyone interested in the policies and economics of healthcare systems, as well as, obviously, nurses (especially male and/or school nurses), and anyone familiar with boarding schools (lots of interesting anecdotes in here about things that I know from experience seem to only happen in boarding schools!).Finally, there are a lot of aspects of this book that focus on the negative sides of nursing, but I think that was actually a big reason I enjoyed this book. The author comes across as very candid and genuine, and the realities of nursing explained here just show how so many nurses continue to go above and beyond for their patients regardless of the circumstances.
