Created as a haven for all, Wiccandra was supposed to be a safe place... Trapped in a house fire, Poppy and her younger brother, Mike, have no possible way to escape. As death is about to claim them, rescue arrives from the most unlikely of places. Dragged to a world created by witches centuries ago, they find themselves under the protection of an elephant named Jelani. However, the magical beast’s strength may not be enough to help them survive the dangers of a world filled with witches, warlocks, and other fairy tale creatures. Targeted by an evil coven, Poppy and Mike find themselves in peril as Mike is whisked away to become a sacrifice to the Great White Trees, and Poppy is left in the hands of a cruel slave trader. Things go from bad to worse as she prepares to be sold to the highest bidder in a sick world so unlike her own. Though Poppy knows Jelani and the other friends she’s made along the way are searching for her, she’s determined to escape the slave trade because she is no one’s property! Magic and mayhem unite as Poppy and her friends fight to overcome the evils of a magical world built to save the very people it is destroying. Surviving won’t be easy, but nothing in Wiccandra is.

By Leadville Laurel I cannot say I like a book that starts with a promise of magic and adventure and then dumps me into a sordid world of lechery, rape, and hopelessness.Although there are some wonderfully creative ideas such as the elephant that escapes from a painting and white trees that pull “things” into an upside-down world—ideas a YA audience would love to explore--the story quickly becomes dark and confusing, leaving me wondering who is meant to be the target audience. One scene reminds me of the movie Dumbo, and the witches and warlocks are typical of YA stories, but the bulk of the last half leans toward appealing to a 50 Shades of Grey audience. So much rape.Ms. Brown might consider writing two different stories for two very different audiences, and I would encourage her to employ an editor. In too many places throughout the slave trade narrative I felt I was being preached at, and I found no differentiation in speech patterns between any of the characters. The story ends awkwardly, and based on the more significant issues I’ve addressed, I would not read the next installment.

Dark Themes By Carol Pack "Mark of a Witch’s Slave" by Angeline Brown is the first book in a fantasy series about two young people who are whisked into a world in another dimension to save them from a deadly fire. The protagonists in the book are a 15-year-old girl and her 7-year-old brother, which makes it seem like this a middle grade or young adult book. It also features a talking elephant and a helpful white rat, which is why it is jarring to me that the themes in this book include violence, sex slaves, abuse and murder. It’s not that the book isn’t interesting, or that it’s badly written, because neither of those things are the problem. My problem with "Mark of a Witch’s Slave" is that the audience isn’t clearly defined, and I find that disturbing. If you want to appeal to readers interested in a young woman dealing with slave traders, consider leaving out the talking animals.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

By JEB In Mark of a Witch’s Slave, Ms. Brown creates an interesting and imaginative world inhabited by witches, warlocks, and other magical creatures. In the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to fifteen-year-old Poppy and seven-year-old Mike, the main protagonists of the story, and get to know them a little before their adventure begins. Almost immediately, Jelani, a talking elephant comes storming out of a painting to save our heroes from a burning house and in the process transports them to the magical world of Wiccandra. Up to this point, the story has a very definite YA feel to it – both in writing style and context. However, the narrative quickly takes a sharp turn by introducing mature and adult subject matters such as: human sacrifice, slavery, rape, torture, sadism, and gratuitous violence. This change in direction doesn’t work, especially because it clashes with the original presentation. Ms. Brown needs to decide which audience she’s catering to and adapt the story accordingly. The main arc, as a whole, is promising and I found myself wanting to know how Poppy and Mike are going to escape the world of Wiccandra. Unfortunately, the writing structure almost always takes away from my enjoyment of the plot. Ms. Brown creates many situations for tension buildup, but then missed the mark for tension release by telling the reader how things get resolved instead of showing the action and allowing the reader to get fully immersed in the complexity of the situation. Many of the challenges facing the heroes are resolved very simplistically and could have been developed more. This first book has enough material for two or three books in the series.A professional revision and editing of the book will greatly enhance its appeal. There are many structural problems (misplaced modifiers), punctuation, verb tense usage, and dialogue formatting which are distracting and ultimately take away from the enjoyment of the experience.I would like to congratulate Ms. Brown on her imagination and perseverance in writing Mark of a Witch’s Slave.I received a free of this book in exchange for a fair and honest non-reciprocal review.
