How Suspending Students Can be Harmful; How to Address School Discipline in More Effective Ways By John Rosiak Author and editor Dan Losen et al. take on one of the most important issues in America today--improving student achievement by more effectively and fairly dealing with school discipline in a way that gets students the positive supports they need. Too many schools suspend students unnecessarily, with drastic and counterproductive consequences. Closing the Gap points out that excluding students from school harms them, and does not help the "good kids" learn better. It is a good thing we have such passionate and articulate people such as Losen and the other contributing authors attending to the issue of supporting youth with effective policies and practices that will divert these youth from involvement with the justice system. With the right people doing the right things we can help students learn, and make schools and neighborhoods safer,more caring places where students engage in positive ways.
