Pretty good information By Dano t Most of the "history" information actually pertained to the full auto weapon, I didn't really pick up much that you wouldn't find in the actual owners manual. Pretty good information, but probably not worth quite what is being charged for the book.

By Elisa I'm a stay at home mom that also home schools. I'm always looking for ways to help teach my girls but also to save money. I purchased this workbook because it is all hand writing and tracing letters. There aren't any pages that are for coloring which I like because the coloring really bores my three year old and will make her nearly have a melt down if I try to get her to color. She craves that learning experience that coloring just doesn't give her. In an effort to save money I took all of the pages out of this work book, it doesn't have perforated edges so I had to use a paper cutter to make them nice and clean cut. I then put the pages into sheet protectors, used a sealer to close the top of the sheet protector so the pages would not fall out and put them all into a 3 ring binder. I also grabbed some wet erase markers so that she could sit and work on her hand writing skills at anytime and then instead of throwing the book away when she completed it, we could just wipe the pages clean and start again. This is perfect since she has a little sister who will be turning 2 soon and we can use this over and over again versus purchasing new work books each time.

It's a great book but free is even better By Water's Wdge OK, I bought this and it is great but then I discovered http://www.worksheetfun.com where everything is free to download. Suddenly this book for $7 is too expensive. I would buy this book again only if I didn't have a printer at home or have no way of going to the local library to print the free downloads.

I always try to get her educational gifts to occupy her time when she visits. Tracing the letters and words in this workbook is her current favorite activity and this book is the first thing she asks for each time she visits.The book is large, as are the letters to trace which is good. The first half of the book gives two pages of tracing practice for each letter of the alphabet and the second half gives lots of common(ish) words to trace once you've learned all the letters.I can see her writing getting better which is great and its good to see her having fun too!

    THE POISONED TABLE portrays a passionate rivalry between fictional actress Isabel Graves and real-life Shakespearian stage sensation Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble. In this tale of ambition, romance, and betrayal, Graves harbors early resentment, convinced that Kemble's family theatre connections assured Fanny's selection for the lead role in Romeo and Juliet despite Isabel's superior beauty and talent. The novel traces their unconnected adventures and acting careers in the Old and New Worlds, as well as their introduction to the horrors of American slavery and to romance with one of the wealthiest men in America, Pierce Butler, owner of Georgia cotton and rice plantations and master of more than 800 slaves. Kemble, an ardent abolitionist, falls in love with Butler and marries him before she discovers his wealth derives soley from slave labor. Though glad to be separated from plantation life at her husband's Philadelphia home, Kemble agrees to accompany him on his annual visit to inspect his Georgia investments. Butler assures his wife her apprehensions about slavery will be assuaged once she sees firsthand its humane daily operation. Instead, she is sickened and chronicles her visit in Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839. This account, published in England in 1863, is sometimes credited with dissuading Britain from aiding the Confederacy. Within the novel is a play written by Graves' lover. Set on a slave plantation, the plot portrays a dinner at the master's table and the poisonous conditions which produce its bounty, resulting in an attempted murder. In the controversy following this play's opening night, Kemble and Graves are again at odds, and their rivalry continues as they change places on the stage of theatre and of life.

    Review Cantor's debut novel is both a historical account of the Butler Plantation on the Georgia Coast and a deliciously written tale of revenge and justice, or lack there of. Only the reader can decide. Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble, the renowned British actress is brought to life through the author's craft. With the title, THE POISONED TABLE, readers only need to use their imagination. A brilliant new voice in historical Southern fiction. ----Ann Hite, award-winning author of GHOST ON BLACK MOUNTAIN

    About the Author Diane Michael Cantor was born and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. At Sarah Lawrence College, she studied with writer Grace Paley and poet Jane Cooper. Her plays have been performed in Georgia, and for several years she wrote a weekly serial for the Savannah Morning-News.

    0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Engrossing, memorable novel By David P. Gardner The Poisoned Table is historical fiction, though the usefulness of that term may be questioned, since for lumpers, everything comes under this rubric, and for splitters, or more precisely semanticists, the term is an oxymoron.In any case, this engrossing novel sets itself apart from others of the genre. It is a cleverly structured tale of two actresses whose histories unfold in parallel against the background of an America prior to The Civil War. The original device of counterposing a historically famous actress, Fanny Kemble, against a fictitious but ambitious and equally-weighted rival, Isabel Graves, holds the reader’s interest on several levels. Mark Twain said that the difference between fact and fiction is that fiction must be believable. That the author satisfies this principle is shown by the convincing ease with which fact and fiction - the actresses’ two stories - are interwoven.Frances Anne (Fanny) Kemble was born into a family of actors, the daughter of British actor Charles Kemble and niece of the famous Sarah Siddons. Her history is one of a Victorian female who transcended conventional boundaries by pursuing multiple interests successfully, including writing as well as acting. When Fanny marries the charming but roguish Pierce Butler, a Southern plantation owner, she is confronted by the barbarity of slavery and is shocked by the complaisance of so many toward the practice. Isabel’s tale, on the other hand, is one of zeal for theatrical recognition, debasement and, if not exactly redemption, survival and revival. Her story impinges the life of Fanny at ingenious points. Both histories take the reader by turns to the London of Covent Garden, the high and low social strata of Philadelphia, rural Maryland, and the coastal island cotton and rice plantations of antebellum Georgia, which are described with such acuity that one can almost feel the humidity and hear the whine of insects.This is an imaginatively conceived biographical fiction, historically accurate with respect to the life of Fanny Kemble, and rich with appearances from both famous and infamous characters. It is also a thoughtful and serious work, bearing on women’s struggles for intellectual and legal equality in a male-dominated era, class privilege and, above all, slavery. For readers of Southern origin, of a certain age, steeped in what some will remember was called the Agrarian literary tradition, the book is almost a catharsis, in the sense that arguments by prominent apologists for the slave-based Old South economy, which in our youth may have appealed in the abstract, are presented here in a kind of classic dialectic, and fall to shambles against the stark reality of servitude so trenchantly herein depicted.The Poisoned Table is a highly recommended read and one whose lyrical imagery will linger in the reader’s memory.

By Amazon Customer I met the author at a conference and promised to buy the book because she is a nice person. I read one or two books a week and have never written a review. The Poisoned Table is not at all the usual genre I read. I was prepared to read a bit of it and say "I tried". I became immediately engrossed in The Poisoned Table. It is a very, very good read. It is well researched, reflects well the English of the 19th century, and holds many tales that provoke thought. It is simply a very good book. If you just want to read a good book, try The Poisoned Table. It is worth it. I am recommending this book to friends and family and am very much looking forward to Diane's next effort.

Not the complete package you're looking for By Vince Kotchian Quality is more important than quantity.I tutor the GRE for a living, but I realize that the vast majority of people who take the GRE never use a tutor. If you're self-studying, here are my two cents on the effectiveness of this "complete" package and thoughts on other options.Essays: Kaplan, unlike most publishers, actually includes exercises to improve your writing. If you have a long time to prepare for the GRE, this is helpful. But when you actually practice for the essays, make sure you use the official prompts, which are all published at ets.org/gre. Make sure you analyze official ETS sample essays, not Kaplan ones, since the ETS ones are from the real GRE essay graders.Verbal: Kaplan's verbal review book, like its main GRE book, does not do a very good job mimicking how complicated real GRE verbal questions are. Also, its verbal technique is simple...too simple. It may work for you on Kaplan verbal questions, but you may find it difficult to use on real ETS questions, which are a lot more complex. I'd also avoid Kaplan's online verbal practice questions, since they are just too easy compared to the real thing.Math: Kaplan's math review book does a pretty good job covering the core concepts, but it ignores many of the less common concepts. If you want a competitive score, you'll need to supplement with other sources (I recommend Manhattan Prep's). The practice math questions in the books and online suffer from the same flaw as the verbal ones: they're too simple, repetitive and straightforward.Overall: Even though this product includes more material than you'll probably have time to get through, the quality is lacking. There are many better options for people who want more than an average score. Therefore, I take issue with the product's name: it is not a complete package. Tip: the closest option to a complete package is the Manhattan Prep GRE set of 8 books (strangely enough, Manhattan Prep is owned by Kaplan).

My son is getting ready to start college and he doesn't take notes - at all. We have discussed this and he knows that he needs to develop a system so have both just read Mike Danford's "Note Taking Made Easy". This is a wonderful guide for anyone who needs to figure out how to shortcut the note taking process. Danford helps the reader decipher what the important things are to jot down, some great focusing techniques, ways to review notes effectively, and many other awesome tips. Wonderful guide on note taking that I wish I'd had a long time ago.

Until I read this e-book on notetaking I realized how much more I could've done to understand my notes better. My notes have always been very sloppy. Notetaking has really good tips on how to stay prepared and how to write less with a given amount of time that you may have because like the book says "the less you have to jot down in a given amount of time the better". If you're looking to brush up on your notetaking skills this is definitely a book you need to have. Even when you can't remember what it is exactly that you're trying to perfect you can always go back and book and get a little good reminder. I could've got this book at a better time. With 3 kids, a mother and a husband to look over. I have to sit down monthly and set goals, plans and do research on our next adventure whether it be the purchase of a new car or which bank account to open up. I tend to be a list maker when it comes to notes and color coding. However after reading the E-book I was able to take a few pointers and put them to use and that is one page per idea or day instead of an ongoing mush of lists. I also loved the Cornell Method which prior to reading this I had never heard of. I really think this is geared more towards HS and maybe college students. It's also a good to check it out as an adult and put into play some forgotten methodsI received this eBook for free in exchange for an honest, unbiased review

    Created as a haven for all, Wiccandra was supposed to be a safe place... Trapped in a house fire, Poppy and her younger brother, Mike, have no possible way to escape. As death is about to claim them, rescue arrives from the most unlikely of places. Dragged to a world created by witches centuries ago, they find themselves under the protection of an elephant named Jelani. However, the magical beast’s strength may not be enough to help them survive the dangers of a world filled with witches, warlocks, and other fairy tale creatures. Targeted by an evil coven, Poppy and Mike find themselves in peril as Mike is whisked away to become a sacrifice to the Great White Trees, and Poppy is left in the hands of a cruel slave trader. Things go from bad to worse as she prepares to be sold to the highest bidder in a sick world so unlike her own. Though Poppy knows Jelani and the other friends she’s made along the way are searching for her, she’s determined to escape the slave trade because she is no one’s property! Magic and mayhem unite as Poppy and her friends fight to overcome the evils of a magical world built to save the very people it is destroying. Surviving won’t be easy, but nothing in Wiccandra is.

By Leadville Laurel I cannot say I like a book that starts with a promise of magic and adventure and then dumps me into a sordid world of lechery, rape, and hopelessness.Although there are some wonderfully creative ideas such as the elephant that escapes from a painting and white trees that pull “things” into an upside-down world—ideas a YA audience would love to explore--the story quickly becomes dark and confusing, leaving me wondering who is meant to be the target audience. One scene reminds me of the movie Dumbo, and the witches and warlocks are typical of YA stories, but the bulk of the last half leans toward appealing to a 50 Shades of Grey audience. So much rape.Ms. Brown might consider writing two different stories for two very different audiences, and I would encourage her to employ an editor. In too many places throughout the slave trade narrative I felt I was being preached at, and I found no differentiation in speech patterns between any of the characters. The story ends awkwardly, and based on the more significant issues I’ve addressed, I would not read the next installment.

    1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dark Themes By Carol Pack "Mark of a Witch’s Slave" by Angeline Brown is the first book in a fantasy series about two young people who are whisked into a world in another dimension to save them from a deadly fire. The protagonists in the book are a 15-year-old girl and her 7-year-old brother, which makes it seem like this a middle grade or young adult book. It also features a talking elephant and a helpful white rat, which is why it is jarring to me that the themes in this book include violence, sex slaves, abuse and murder. It’s not that the book isn’t interesting, or that it’s badly written, because neither of those things are the problem. My problem with "Mark of a Witch’s Slave" is that the audience isn’t clearly defined, and I find that disturbing. If you want to appeal to readers interested in a young woman dealing with slave traders, consider leaving out the talking animals.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

    0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An interesting magical tale for a MUCH older YA audience. Needs editing. By JEB In Mark of a Witch’s Slave, Ms. Brown creates an interesting and imaginative world inhabited by witches, warlocks, and other magical creatures. In the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to fifteen-year-old Poppy and seven-year-old Mike, the main protagonists of the story, and get to know them a little before their adventure begins. Almost immediately, Jelani, a talking elephant comes storming out of a painting to save our heroes from a burning house and in the process transports them to the magical world of Wiccandra. Up to this point, the story has a very definite YA feel to it – both in writing style and context.However, the narrative quickly takes a sharp turn by introducing mature and adult subject matters such as: human sacrifice, slavery, rape, torture, sadism, and gratuitous violence. This change in direction doesn’t work, especially because it clashes with the original presentation. Ms. Brown needs to decide which audience she’s catering to and adapt the story accordingly.The main arc, as a whole, is promising and I found myself wanting to know how Poppy and Mike are going to escape the world of Wiccandra. Unfortunately, the writing structure almost always takes away from my enjoyment of the plot. Ms. Brown creates many situations for tension buildup, but then missed the mark for tension release by telling the reader how things get resolved instead of showing the action and allowing the reader to get fully immersed in the complexity of the situation. Many of the challenges facing the heroes are resolved very simplistically and could have been developed more. This first book has enough material for two or three books in the series.A professional revision and editing of the book will greatly enhance its appeal. There are many structural problems (misplaced modifiers), punctuation, verb tense usage, and dialogue formatting which are distracting and ultimately take away from the enjoyment of the experience.I would like to congratulate Ms. Brown on her imagination and perseverance in writing Mark of a Witch’s Slave.I received a free of this book in exchange for a fair and honest non-reciprocal review.

For some students, it’s still a good choice that leads to a successful career after graduation, but for many their degrees are worthless pieces of paper. In this book, Ken S. Coates and Bill Morrison set out to explore the many educational opportunities and career paths open to high-school students and those in their twenties. This book is designed to help Americans in their teens and twenties decide whether to pursue a degree, enrol for skills training, or investigate one of the many other options that are available.

Misleading quote on Amazon By Laura Petrie Full quote from PW, not just the partial quote on Amazon: "Coates and Morrison's style is accessible, and they make important points about the shifting job market and the devaluing of university diplomas, but dividing students into the "curious" and the "swarm" overlooks different learning styles. It may be beyond this book's scope, but it's worth asking if some students struggle due to outdated university curriculums that are in need of change. After all, when people say "university isn't for everyone," they often mean everyone but themselves."

    In their first encounter, demigod Percy Jackson and magician Carter Kane had to battle a giant crocodile on Long Island. A month later, Annabeth Chase ran into Carter's sister, Sadie, on the A train to Rockaway, where the pair fought a god named Serapis. Now trouble is brewing again, this time on Governor's Island. An ancient Egyptian magician named Setne has come back from the dead and is experimenting with Egyptian and Greek magic, trying to become a god himself. He's so powerful and tricky that all four—Percy, Annabeth, Carter, and Sadie—have to team up against him. But their usual weapons and spells aren't going to cut it this time. Will the heroes be taken down by a wannabe god who looks like Elvis, or will they rise to the challenge? Told from Percy's point of view, this third demigod-magician crossover story has all of the spunk and action that Rick Riordan fans crave.

I was amused by Percy's thoughts about how Sadie was exactly what he though a daughter of his and Annabeth would be like! Looking like Annabeth but acting like him! Lol! There was a lot of action in the story, it was only short so I read it in one sitting!

By Brynn I never even thought that something could be more amazing than the Kanes and the Greeks fighting together. I was right.**Spoiler**Magnus Chase also seems SO GOOD and I'm happy that they brought Annabeth in so early. I just hope that she tells Magnus who she is and what she is. IM SO EXCITED!!!

By Tina Holland This crossover story is the most funny so far, and I think that comes because it has been told from Percy point of view. I do not think that it leaved the way open to extend further, and I would like to read more of this kind of crossover stories, specially if it would include one of the Olympian heroes ( Jason and Piper, Hazel and Frank, Leo and Calypso, Reyna of Nico and Will?). The combining Greek and Egyptian combat strategies are very good, and I am more on the Sadie / Percy way of thinking, I kind of like charging in.

    Educators remove over 3.45 million students from school annually for disciplinary reasons, despite strong evidence that school suspension policies are harmful to students. The research presented in this volume demonstrates that disciplinary policies and practices that schools control directly exacerbate today's profound inequities in educational opportunity and outcomes. Part I explores how suspensions flow along the lines of race, gender, and disability status. Part II examines potential remedies that show great promise, including a district-wide approach in Cleveland, Ohio, aimed at social and emotional learning strategies.

    Closing the School Discipline Gap is a call for action that focuses on an area in which public schools can and should make powerful improvements, in a relatively short period of time.

    Contributors include Robert Balfanz, Jamilia Blake, Dewey Cornell, Jeremy D. Finn, Thalia González, Anne Gregory, Daniel J. Losen, David M. Osher, Russell J. Skiba, Ivory A. Toldson

    “Closing the School Discipline Gap can make an enormous difference in reducing disciplinary exclusions across the country. This book not only exposes unsound practices and their disparate impact on the historically disadvantaged, but provides educators, policymakers, and community advocates with an array of remedies that are proven effective or hold great promise. Educators, communities, and students alike can benefit from the promising interventions and well-grounded recommendations.”—Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education, Stanford University

    “For over four decades school discipline policies and practices in too many places have pushed children out of school, especially children of color. Closing the School Discipline Gap shows that adults have the power—and responsibility—to change school climates to better meet the needs of children. This volume is a call to action for policymakers, educators, parents, and students.”—Marian Wright Edelman, president, Children’s Defense Fund

How Suspending Students Can be Harmful; How to Address School Discipline in More Effective Ways By John Rosiak Author and editor Dan Losen et al. take on one of the most important issues in America today--improving student achievement by more effectively and fairly dealing with school discipline in a way that gets students the positive supports they need. Too many schools suspend students unnecessarily, with drastic and counterproductive consequences. Closing the Gap points out that excluding students from school harms them, and does not help the "good kids" learn better. It is a good thing we have such passionate and articulate people such as Losen and the other contributing authors attending to the issue of supporting youth with effective policies and practices that will divert these youth from involvement with the justice system. With the right people doing the right things we can help students learn, and make schools and neighborhoods safer,more caring places where students engage in positive ways. How do we prepare students to become problem-finders, innovators, and entrepreneurs who can thrive in a global society? The Common Core charts a pathway to success, yet we know that checking off each standard one by one will not achieve the kind of results we want. This powerful book by bestselling author Nancy Sulla has the answers. She explains how teachers can bring students to deeper levels of learning by shifting from the what to the how of the CCSS. She offers seven insights that you can use to teach the standards in a more meaningful way, to bring all of your students to true understanding and application.

    You’ll uncover how to…

    • Incorporate ends-based teaching to ensure that the instructional focus is on the ultimate goal of each standard and not just on the basic skills;
    • Encourage grappling with content through structured techniques such as problem-based learning, questioning, and simulations;
    • Use cognitive progression, by understanding how the brain learns, to produce real results.
    • Harness the power of language in all disciplines, not just in English language arts;
    • Build executive function in the brain rather than focusing on academic function alone;
    • Increase retention by using learning and practice activities in different ways and by differentiating instruction; and
    • Become a true facilitator, not just a responder to students’ questions.

    Throughout the book, you’ll find a variety of practical examples from across the curriculum, as well as "Your Turn" opportunities to help you try the ideas in your own classroom.

    The future may not be easily defined, but it can be shaped by teachers who are right now preparing the next generation of world citizens.

By Dianne Mayberry-Hatt Finally - a book that explains with clarity and substantive examples, how Common Core State Standards could look in a classroom Using seven insights, Dr. Sulla provides elucidating strategies of HOW to teach the Standards. These insights offer visionary pedagogy to frame the “robust, yet reasonable set of expectations” embedded in CCSS. The depth and breadth of this book penetrate conventional thinking about teaching and learning and challenge the reader to wittingly consider the author’s premises. Even though the readers may be primarily educators, anyone who wants to understand what the CCSS are really about, should read this well-organized, well-written book. The venerable Dr. Nancy Sulla has demonstrated her educational acumen once again.

Diszler A well written book that will help teachers and administrators embrace the Common Core Standards and offer very tangible ways to increase rigor and student achievement. What I especially like about this book is that I can have my staff read it cover to cover for a administrative book study, or pick and choose specific chapters to help individual teachers enhance their instruction. Every bit of this book is user friendly and relevant for today's learners.
