Andre makes preparing for the normally boring and unwieldy ACT and tests FUN, and INTERESTING. Andre's explanations and teaching style shine in his text and his graphics create an un-intimidating (if that's not a word, I just invented it) atmosphere that will help students relax and learn. This is by far, one of the BEST INVESTMENTS you can make for your child. BUY IT NOW!

Practical and entertaining guide to the ACT By Sarah Sanderson Having to take such an important standardized test such as the ACT can feel terrifying and overwhelming. In this delightful guide to the ACT, Kiss helps students break down the most common types of questions, develop new, more effective habits and use transferrable skills to recognize patterns across the test. The author has spent years helping students prepare along with examining typical questions and uses his experience for your advantage. A little humor and a lot of solid, practical advice go a long way to make this book a no-brainer for a student looking to conquer the ACT.

The mentions of CATS and UNICORNS, etc., work to brighten up the long study sessions. For example, the "ACT motivation sheet" is super funny when it mentions the tempting pull of Internet videos of cats, distracting students from their studying. We've definitely all been there. On the whole, the author's voice is down to earth and expresses care for the student. It can also be said that, overall, the writing is less than perfect... In main part, this is due to the overuse of idioms and clichés (like "throw in the towel", "suck it up and see how the cookie would crumble", "bad habits die hard", etc.).It's got a sort of stream-of-consciousness flow, which is easy to read :) .... but isn't "high quality" writing. In other words... the writing style is very casual and informal. Maybe that's just what a high schooler needs, though. The content is a little olderbrother/parent-y... like 'you-may-not-know-what's-best-for-you-right-now-but-this-studying-will-help-you-out-in-the-future'. The book sort of oversimplifies the factors motivating or preventing students from studying for their tests. I don't think many highschoolers who don't WANT to study will have their minds changed by this book prompting them to consider how positively or negatively this study sesh will affect their future.... everybody knows that a high score > low score & that if we studied everything in the world, we'd be more knowledgeable than if we DIDN'T study everything in the world... but these people's priorities, desires, and motivations are not that simple. The book is tad repetitive on the whole concept of: "Following my strategies as closely as possible is essential for improving your score." We kind of getttt that Andre Kiss is only saying these things because he's looking out for the students -- but it comes off kind of like a parent.Fortunately, the book is only condescending in the parenty sense of "I-know-what's-best-for-you"... but NOT condescending in any judgement/ unapproachable kind of way... which would be way worse! Thanks to its approachability, the book is an easy and informative read! For overburdened highschoolers, this light-hearted yet educational book would be perfect.
