In sixteenth century Prague, two infamous English alchemists consult with a series of mysterious and dangerous spirits. John Dee longs to rediscover the first, lost language of man from these messengers; but Edward Kelly is slowly coming unhinged at the violent visions he suffers while contacting the entities. Dee believes they speak to angels. Kelly is not so sure, and soon the spirits demand release from the safe confines of the scrying table. Led by a black-cowled heart thief known as the Onyx Monk, they seek to awaken a power greater than themselves. While Dee and Kelly consort with otherworldly powers, the Forest Oaf of Atlantis awaits dissection by the eyeless ghoul known as the Mad Astronomer. The Oaf wishes to escape to his homeland, but his only hope is a dissolute and drunken gambler stranded in Prague. In the loud markets, among petty thieves and snakeoil salesmen, the gambler plots the Oaf's escape with the help of an unlikely alchemical captive of the Emperor, the Red Lion. Meanwhile, a young former monk rebels against his abbot. Beaten, hunted, he escapes the monastery. He is soon pulled into the designs of Dee and Kelly as he tries to reveal the truth behind the angelic incantations. A beautiful and troubled apothecary, Ewa, aids his recovery after his escape. The two form an alliance and affection for each other, but a jealous Kelly stands in their way. One man at court—Dr. Hayek, court physician and secret minister of the supernatural in Prague—tries to understand the murdering demons in the streets at night and the appearance of escaped gryphons, basilisks and other creatures thought mythical. With his only friend, an intelligent homunculus who can't remember his past or purpose, he struggles to solve the mystery of the Mad Astronomer and stop the demonic forces at play in restless Prague. The 49th Call is set among the palace chambers, castle alchemical kitchens, and dangerous city streets of Prague during the height of its glory. Following an epic cast of characters, in the midst of court intrigue, infernal plots, and a city beset by floods and supernatural forces, these different characters meet and must find a way to save Prague from the dark power of the 49th Call.

His wordcraft transports the reader to 16th century Prague so completely that it tricks the senses. The way he intertwines historical accuracy with fantasy is spellbinding. Captivating to the last word, follow John Dee, Edward Kelley, and a hyper-imaginative cast of characters through an epic tale of alchemy, magic, and the mysteries of the supernatural.

The way the setting and action are introduced really grabbed my imagination, and I remained fascinated by the subject (dark arts) long after leaving the page. It's obvious Mr. Blair spent considerable time researching the history, customs, and language of this era. A sticky, satisfying read.

Although it's a historical fantasy, this book is reminiscent at times of Vonnegut, Heller, Bukowski, and Henry Miller. Blair is a fantastic storyteller. There is quite a bit of development before you get to the major action, but that's part of what makes the plot so powerful. He does a great job painting the inner psychology of various diverse characters. But really I go back to sense of humor. Think about it ... Like those authors I list above, that humor range is critical to creating a good read. Highly recommended.

I bought another book (barrons) and was able to understand the information better. Seems like they skimmed through a lot of the information but still have helpful tips that the Barron's book did not. Could have used 2 practice tests as well vs only having 1.

I find study guides much more helpful when I can turn the pages or write on them. That's why I got an actual book rather than a kindle version. It arrived promptly and seems like a very good guide so far. I will not be taking the test for about a year and a half but wanted to get a head start at figuring out what kind of stuff would be on the test. I love that this book is straight forward and to the point. I highly recommend this study aid. I received this product at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest opinion.

The visual for the pilot and navigation were seriously lacking, as well as the math and quant sections. I've had the Barrons, but lost it and thought this would be a nice study guide, but it seems to have only had quiz scenarios and not necessarily the information and literature to explain the concepts, as in most study guides do.I would not recommend this study guide, and only gave it two starts because it has some relevant information.

Very Informative on Native American Culture By AvidReader As a lover of all things Native American I found this book to be informative on the topics it touched on such as the various song and dance traditions, games played amongst themselves for generations, along with how the process a Native American goes through to obtain their Indian name. It was authentic in the author actually lived with the Indians to observe all that they represented. Although an older book I think in this situations it was more accurate than one written today as in the early 1900’s most Indian traditions would still have been in existence where in today’s society like all cultures, a lot of what was authentic is lost…loved it

About the Author Amy Rose Taylor earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Columbia University School of Nursing's Entry to Practice Program.  While at Columbia, she was selected as a Josiah Macy Interprofessional Scholar in Narrative Medicine as well as a Rudin Oncology Scholar.  She volunteered as a research assistant for Dr. Mary O. Mundinger on several projects while earning her bachelor's degree, and some of her work has since been published in peer-reviewed journals.   As a bachelor's degree student, Amy Rose's clinical sites included New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Campus (OB/GYN), Mount Sinai Hospital (RICU), Nyack Hospital (Addiction/Recovery), Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York (Cardiology), and Metropolitan Hospital (ED).   She regularly assists prospective students with their applications to nursing programs throughout the New York area, as well as providing assistance and guidance as they earn their degree.  For more information on applying to and succeeding in nursing school, as well as to contact Amy Rose, visit nursingschoolbook101.com.   Amy Rose currently works as a registered nurse at Nyack Hospital in Rockland County, NY, while simultaneously earning her MSN as a nurse practitioner from Columbia.
