The acrylics of today have grown into the most adaptable art material of the modern age. Focusing on a popular art medium that has been around for over 50 years, The New Acrylics illustrates how artists can create lush textures, color, and luster with the modern acrylics readily available in any art supply store. These are nontoxic, environmentally sound, and exist in the most dazzling array of chemical formats—from the most fluid to the highly viscous. Not only do artists paint with acrylics these days, they can create rich metallic effects, or even 3-dimensional sculptures. Traditional technique based books on acrylics cover traditional methods of painting. However, The New Acrylics is geared toward more nonconventional ways in which to manipulate modern-day acrylics, and demonstrates new applications such as glazing, textured effects, soft sculpture effects, or staining, thus reinventing the old way of handling acrylics, and revealing a fabulous new artistic medium. The underlying theme of this dazzling and sophisticated book is to encourage artists to interpret and handle acrylic paints in a vibrant, fresh, and above all, individualistic style.

The New Acrylics, by Rheni Tauchid

From Booklist Artist and paints developer Tauchid explains the properties and applications of acrylics, a medium touted as "the most adaptable art material of the modern age." Tauchid begins by characterizing this do-it-all, fast-drying paint with its unparalleled clarity of dried pigment and bondable, virtually glass-clear polymers that do not degrade, discolor, or become brittle with time. These nontoxic chemical inventions, on the market for some 50 years, comprise more than 60 percent of all artists' paints sold in North America today. Technical in its approach, half the book describes the chemical components, attributes, production methods, and grades, moving on to a basic primer that lists materials and equipment. Tauchid then progresses to basic applications, which include glazing, underpainting, and staining, and goes on to discuss barrier-breaking alternative approaches (stained glass, acrylic transfer, even soft sculpture), complete with demonstrations. A variety of artists' work in eye-popping color and a wide range of styles amply illustrate this well-indexed resource. Whitney ScottCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Very unique By Amazon Customer Just wanted to write a review because the title doesn't give you much info as to what's in the book- I bought it just because I love acrylics and there aren't many books on the subject compared with other mediums. Much of the book is about textural acrylics- acrylics made thick with mediums. They really get into showing you many photos of obscure working methods like cutting up sheets of tinted (dry) acrylic gel into squares to make a mosaic or how to make a stained glass panel with transparent acrylics. This is a very good book for learning about the paint itself, what it's made of, what effects can be achieved by manipulating it, how to do silkscreening, monoprinting, and acrylic transfers. You won't find any paintings of flowers in this book! If you love acrylics this is the book to broaden your horizons. :)

Brander I purchased this book thinking it would be a book on new ways to work with acrylics and it did indeed contain this information but even more important to me is the fact that the author explains how acrylics work (the differences in acrylic mediums, how they are made, how they reflect light/color, how to blend the different types, make use of color and everything else an artist should know about the media in which they're working.) On the whole an excellent book.

It was written by a scientist employed by Tri-Art, a Canadian company that manufactures artists' paints. At first glance, I expected a sort of book-length infomercial about Tri-Art paints, but this is actually something much better. There are some very good books about acrylic painting on the market, but none are quite like this one. It's more like a technical manual, but one that is surisingly easy to read and understand. It clearly explains what acrylics are, how they are made, and what they can do. If you have been curious about acrylics, and frustrated by the scarcity of good up-to-date books, this may be just what you are looking for. But experienced painters can also get some new ideas and inspiration from this book. I have used acrylics for many years, but I enjoyed reading this book, and learned things that were completely new to me. Acrylics are the chameleons of artists' materials; they can be anything, and do anything you can think of. The book's demonstrations show that acrylic paint can go way beyond the usual canvas or paper surfaces, and be used for scuplture and decorative effects that are really amazing. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the lack of any mention of health or environmental safety. Anyone working with art materials needs to know whether there are potential hazards, and how to avoid them. Unfortunately, you will have to look this information up somewhere else.
