5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A promising entry from a new author.... By InternetCelebrity I recently finished reading Scott James Magner's first Novella, Hearts of Iron. I had no previous exposure to the Foreworld Saga, or any SideQuest offerings, but in the end it did not matter. As a voracious reader of most things Fantasy, it was very refreshing to come upon an author who put time and effort into the finer details of their writing. Far too often Fantasy writers gloss over the technical aspects of warfare, and it was a relief to see that Scott provided quite a bit of information within each encounter.As a reviewer, I won't bore you with a duplicate synopsis of the story, or potentially spoil things you wish to discover for yourself. Instead, let me emphasize that this Novella displays a strong grasp of unique and memorable character creation, undoubtedly honed over the years of working within the gaming industry, and an eye for descriptive detail. I am a visual reader, and while being a Novella does limit the overall descriptive length, I found a visually rich story being spun before my eyes as I cycled page after page.Is it all songbirds and singalongs? No. As noted, this is a promising first entry by Scott James Magner. Rarely do you find someone who hits a home run on their first at bat, but the Author displays instincts and understanding that with time will be honed further. I can only hope that he continues to receive opportunities, because I feel it would be a shame to let someone with such promise escape the grasps of wanting readers. Specifically, for me, it was a single character. In hindsight, it could very well be chalked up to the length limitations dictated by the format (Novella). I wanted some conclusions to be reached at a slower pace.I've already recommended this book to my inner circle of fellow Fantasy readers, and now I do so to the greater public. If you're a Prime member, you've got your freebie to use. Additionally, if you're on the fence about plunking down a meager amount for some quality Fantasy - try a sample, it won't kill you.

MacPherson Hearts of Iron drops you into the Byzantine corridors of power, providing an unflinching study of a harsh world. The three brothers, sons of a Norman knight, use their blades--and their brains--as they deal with threats, promises, allies, and enemies. Magner's writing delivers detailed authenticity that immersed me into the story. This novella should please fans of Dune or A Song of Ice and Fire, or anyone who prefers something more complex than "good king vs. bad king."An excellent addition to The Foreworld Saga!

It had a very interesting plot and the setting is very engaging. I read it straight through and can't wait to see what's next. The stories about Professor Bentley’s (one of the main characters in the book) ability to predict using the mysterious Chinese Yin and Yang are very fascinating. I am really interested in learning Yin and Yang after reading this book. The author is a very descriptive writer and this helps the reader to clearly picture. I highly recommend the book for anyone who is interested in mystery/suspense genres.

By ViviW What amazed me was that this book combined the ancient Chinese' Yin, Yang, Qi and Gua calculation into the fortune-telling, which was quite popular in China for thousands of years prior to the so-called modern anti-superstitious era. Not only did the author have a thorough understanding of the ancient skill, the author also has an excellent understanding of the wide-ranged political events including the ones in the U.S. as well as those of other countries. Without releasing more insights, I'd like to highly recommend this well-written book!

I enjoyed it, found it hard to put down. The characters flowed as if real and the story, well, a different slant on an old theme but with something new. By the time you think you know the end, it changes. Then when you get to the end, read it your self you will understand.Tony Caught

Fambro One of the best books out there today from an African-diasporan perspective, on the realities of world eurocentric racism, and it's causes, toward Africans and African-diasporans world wide. This author gives first hand accounts of scheming, conniving, government officials from the US, Europe, Middle East, Asia, etc., in their efforts to continue to steal Africa's wealth from the rightful heirs. The heirs are Africans and African-diasporan's, who never asked to be slaves in other lands, and given no recompense after slavery. Africa's wealth belongs to all her children.Africans need no reparations, aid, etc., They need full control of their land, resources, politics, and economies. All African diasporans need full citizenship immediately throughout Africa, land, and a right to return and build. All business contracts with Africa should be approved by Africans at home and abroad. " Africa is not for sale".

By Seth This book changed the way i think about Africa and African people both on the continent and in the Diaspora, African people are the wealthiest people on the planet in terms of wealth and resources, like Mr. Weston said Africa is the future with the Diaspora going back using Dual citizenship to reclaim their wealth and land, its clear to see that the African people specially the youth will have a bright future ahead of them.

Jan grew up on the Yakima Indian Reservation and some might wonder if this is a true story or just a reflection of the things that went on -- romanticized in this compelling novel? The characters in the book are all very complex and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Jan is a brilliant writer and this book is a wild ride. Hang on!

He is supposed to be the "hero", but never comes across as one. The slew of supporting characters that are introduced are so flat that I couldn't really tell one from the other. In other words, I just didn't care about what happened to anybody in the story since the author never gave me a reason to care.There are guilds that are made up of immature one dimensional characters that soul purpose is to steal "loot" and "booty". The interactions between the characters are forced and obtuse.Every cliche you could think about in a fantasy setting is used. Reading this book felt like I was playing a poorly designed D&D video game. Meet strangers, immediately go on "quests" to collect loot and magical items to boost your abilities (level up), then teleport back to the guild hall. Get another "quest", go try to steal something from some fantasy based race.. teleport back to the guild hall... Wash, rinse, repeat. The guild that is focused upon in this story is supposed to be some "defenders of the weak" or some such cliche, but all they are is a bunch of bumbling thieves that rush into an "adventure" to get rich. This was not a good read at all.

It was recommended to me by BookBub.com. This book was a four star delight.Book 1 Defender. Cyrus Davidon is an adventurer/leader of a guild which consists of him and two close friends. As it is with any small guild they are only able to take on small task that do not pay well or produce big treasure. Ah we know it well starting off a new character. Oops I mean beginning a new book. Anyway, they get an opportunity to join in a mega quest with mostly novice adventures and some veteran adventures sprinkled in. This is how Cyrus meets Sanctuary a medium size guild that has established alliances with two other guilds. Well this leads to adventuring my friend and not rats in the cellar kind either.The thing that intrigued me about the story is there is some kind of dark future coming and Cyrus, with his side quest for a legendary item, seems to be in the middle of it. It’s true it reads like a video game. I have played games and thought, “How would this be as a book?” Now I know how it would read. The things you take for granted in a great video game are tougher to equate too mentally in a book. Such as a resurrection spell that cures you after being crushed. However, I grew up playing these mostly awesome games so I am ok with it.The other thing of note is the story is being told in the past and the present. Just in case you don’t like that kind of thing, now you know.Book 2 Avenger Can Sanctuary survive, devious plots from the members within, the politics of the major races around them, the accusation that they or their members are raiding convoys, and possible betrayal in the alliances and is that the sound of war drums? You will have to read this second installment to find out.Cyrus becomes even more important to the existence of Sanctuary as they try to be the guild based on helping others and strong ethics. There is much going against them and they will have to fight not only monsters to survive but the coming of war.I don’t know Avenger can be said without Assemble after it. Every time I say the name I want to yell Assemble. Anyway, book two continues to build the Cyrus legend and is has better storytelling.Book 3 Champion There is war, assassins, even more betrayal and Cyrus is having a midlife crisis. All this and Sanctuary must deal the elves’ rulers, goblins, humans’ council, and the war has come to the land.This is the best book yet of this series. I felt truly emotional invested in Champion. Robert has fallen into his stride with this book, but I have not yet made the mental move to invest in book 4 Crusader. In conclusion I gave this set a four star, which would have been a five if they all were on the same order as Champion. What most bothers me are the reviewers that say a book was unreadable when I know the mind can actual make out words with the letters in the wrong order. This is to say that many of these books are free to several dollars in price, if it bothered me this much I would stick with big publishing companies. For all of you impeccable, unimpeachable, unassailable readers this review is not for you.

A world that has Elves, trolls, titans, dragons and more that keep you enthralled, a world that has plenty of adventure and deceit, treachery, friendships, pain and love. As these stories unfold here and in the later books you see all the characters actually grow into who they all really are. One of my favorite things about this series is how Cyrus and the rest of the main characters have this fun and funny at times banter that goes back and forth (even at the most inopportune times) a witty sense of humor that always come in at the right moments. Also great is the amount of action that takes place, both in large scale battles to the small things that are "behind the scenes". This isn't one of those books or authors who keeps everything status quo, nope they evolve as the world of Arkaria changes around them. Hands down one of the best Epic Fantasy series I have ever read, far and away my favorite of any work out right now.A read you will not want to put down until you are finished.

What better way to show the love a son has for his father? This is not just a children's book, this book is for adults to. There is such a strong message! LOVE! And the fact that children look up to their parents. They pay attention to everything. We must be good stewards and great examples.My 14 year old son read this book and commented how nice it was! He said how much he enjoyed it. 14! My grandson has this book, I hope that my son is reading it to him every chance he gets!Thank you Joanie for having such a passion for our children of color.... and for ALL children and families!

The illustration are by BroMiguel, and are perfect for either a little boy or a little girl who might by into cars. The story is perfect for a child 7 and under. It's pretty easy for a 6 or 7 year old reader to read on their own. Also, for parents to read with or to their younger children. There is more to the book, but it is a short story and I don't like giving out all the details.
