By Lovetoread Nick Marinoff has done an incredible job of compiling all the information you need to know to save money on a college education, whether it be for yourself or your children. As a university lecturer who has taught for over twenty years, I didn't expect to learn a lot of new information. I was dead wrong. I can't wait to share all the valuable tips included in this book with my future students. I also feel much more educated about the complexities of financial aid, scholarships, grants, and loans.Marinoff's research on the shocking realities of our country's rapidly rising college costs and mounting college loan debt opened my eyes. I am now much more aware of current legislation related to these issues as well. Empower yourself by reading this book to learn how it's possible for anyone to obtain a four-year degree, not only the wealthy and powerful.In addition to the wonderful content in the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's voice. Marinoff is extremely eloquent and he backs up all of his assertions with reliable studies as well as relevant and interesting personal experiences. In this volume, there are three marriages between a Rhode Island socialite and a British desserter, a sailor and a Williamsburg socialite, and a young widow and a New England post rider.

About the Author Kathleen Glynn-Sparrow holds a B.A. from Duke University and a M.Ed. from Emory University. Kathleen served as Director of College Counseling at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, MD. Currently, she is the Associate Director of College Counseling at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, MD. She also runs The College Coaches, a counseling service which guides families through the college process. Kathleen has advised students from prestigious college preparatory schools all over the Washington, D.C. area. She has spent 18 years in school leadership positions and 15 years counseling families about the college process. Ginger Walsh Cobb holds a B.A. in English from Denison University and an M.A. in Private School Leadership from Columbia University. Currently, Ginger is finishing her twenty-first year at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland. Martinez defines intelligence from a cognitive perspective as a repertoire of those skills, strategies, and knowledge structures that are most instrumental in human effectiveness. He posits that in today's complex, fast-paced, technologically dense, and information-rich society, intelligence is the supreme human resource. The current social context not only demands intelligence, but rewards it economically, psychically, and in other ways. His central argument in this book is this: The intellectual abilities that are crucial to modern life, including economic viability and effectiveness in daily living, correspond to the cognitive functions that are reasonably called intelligence; these intellectual abilities are learnable; we now know enough about the structure and mechanisms of intelligent thought and behavior to teach them directly. Martinez explicates his argument and provides research-based evidence to support his claim.

It made me understand the learning process--why some learn fast and why some learn slowly. It taught me that it is important that we learn how we learn. It's a paradox that we can understand by reflecting on ourselves what makes things click for us and how we can figure out things easily--what factors make us learn more and our strengths and weaknesses​ that support or inhibit the learning process. The book contains a number of learning tips we can integrate daily. With everything said and done, the book emphasizes on effort and persistence in learning more and building more knowledge. Must-read!

I am an author and a student in College. College has really been a new experience for me at the ripe age of 47.This book has opened me up to new processes of my learning so that I am always at my peak performance when learning or studying.This book is worth more than what spent!!!I will keep this book in my reference's folder so that I can review it until I have memorized and perfected.

It is a short read and I like that the author didn't waste my time By faby It is a short read and I like that the author didn't waste my time.I already knew most of the concepts about splitting learning time, learning one at a time, etc, but I hadn't really thought of the part of learning about common mistakes people make in the same subject I'm exploring as a beginner; likewise, understanding what experts advise. I think the biggest take is specify one small goal you are excited about then start with basic materials that you can build on.
