This is a textbook which is sure to become a mandatory reading for all students, teachers and citizens of the world interested in getting an authoritative introduction to Hinduism, a religion practised by over 1.3 billion people all over the world.The authors waste no space on their own credentials. True to their beliefs, they allow the reader to gauge those from their work through reasoning and logic.This book is a thoughtful, lucid and carefully referenced introduction to an infinitely vast and complex subject. It is written in the style of a Upanishad - we are asked to engage in thinking, and 'bring out the knowledge that is deep inside" each of us, even as the authors guide us. It is exactly what it says: an Introduction to Hinduism, but with no compromise on depth. That is where the authors' experience as technical experts and as teachers, become apparent. They want every reader to remain in their own comfort zone, and gradually become confident in their understanding and knowledge.Despite being a book on religion, nothing is presented as dogma, everything is based on scientific and societal reasoning and argument. While high-schoolers will enjoy the informal style, so will the rest of us, as the ideas and explorations scale seamlessly across the aeons, opening doors to the works of the giants, starting with Vyasa and Valmiki, all the way to those leading the intellectual debates in 2015.The references to other belief systems, where appropriate, are confidently knowledgeable and respectful, just as much as on those to the numerous Schools of Thought within Hinduism. However, the explanations of Sanatana Dharma are not based on comparisons to any other religion: Sanatana Dharma stands by itself.The chapters on the Vedas, Puranas, and the Bhagavad Gita contain numerous references to deep philosophy, while those on the Epics are written with the confident comfort of believers with empathy for the human drama and the writers of the Epics.A uniquely comprehensive textbook and source of references, this book is at once deeply traditional as well as ultra-modern. It has the technical facts and details expected of a relevant textbook, without being cluttered with details. It presents the arguments and debates of millennia with just the right amount of human and social context. It presents a final chapter that weaves far-reaching research findings from several different fields into a succint logical argument on fundamental issues, but true to their faith, the authors remind us that these are just their faith-based observations, and leave us free to reason for ourselves.The unique chapter on Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam takes us on an eye-opening whirlwind tour of the vast reaches of Sanatana Dharma, both in ancient times and in the present. The book is designed and formatted with the busy technically-equipped learner and handheld devices in mind. This must be the reason why there are so few pictures, tables and other items that one might expect in a print book. One is expected to browse the Internet, or visit temples, to visualize the places, concepts and events described in the book.

By benne Dharma is a system of ethics and moral values that even God must abide by. For 5000 years, "Hinduism" which is actually called "Sanatana Dharma" has been preserved and propagated in India by means of narratives and epic stories so that Hindus used to grow up with an instinctive knowledge of Hinduism (or Hindu Dharma). Mobility and the migration of tens of millions of Hindus to places outside India has broken the narrative chain, often leading to a sense of loss as highly educated and otherwise successful Indians are unable to explain the hoary roots of Hinduism and its deeply refreshing values to their children, let alone anyone else.Earlier attempts at explaining this subject have been hampered by a lack of ability of most Indian writers in English to connect up the tens of thousands of bewitching stories from Hindu culture with the 5000 plus year old "eternal sound" of the Vedas. This requires the double skill of being fluent in English as well as being well versed with Hindu dharma - a trick that Narayanan Komerath and Padma Komerath have managed to perform with ease in this book. This is the most comprehensive and lucid summary of Hinduism that I have ever read.I would recommend this book for every Indian and certainly every Hindu who can read English. I believe the book is a particularly valuable contribution for the millions of Hindus living abroad who might, at some time, have felt frustration at their inability to convey the meaning and place of Hinduism today while their children grow up in a modern culture with Twitter-friendly attention spans and an overload of information.Definitely 5 stars,

By Arun Gupta In an age when Hindus can no longer count on absorbing their culture from the environment, and when they are interrogated by their non-Hindu neighbors about their religion, beliefs, practices, etc., an Introduction to Hinduism is a must-have even for Hindus. It is a magnificent effort, clear and simple enough for the young reader, but rich enough to hold adults' attention.

The book covers 3 eye illnesses: conjunctivitis, vitamin A deficiency and amblyopia, which are common. This could be a good book for public health initiatives in developing countries, or to educate children in eye clinics when they want to learn more about their eye troubles. Given how important it is to teach children good hygiene to keep their eyes healthy, a little education goes a long way. I would love to see the author produce more in this series. Really enjoyed reading it!

This comic quite cleverly helps children not only learn how to practice proper eye care but also gives a description as to why the practice is important. Excellent education tool appropriate for any child!

Lee Hadden An interesting book on serving gifted students in rural areas for educators, guidance counselors and teachers. The problems of rural education are well known. Although most often in education, poverty means inner-city, in fact some of the worst poverty happens in rural America. These problems are also increased when the students are minorities and poor and living in rural areas. Problems of living in areas where the population are dispersed also include lack of opportunity, and teachers are untrained, and they are often assigned multi-task roles that diminish teaching contact with students.The book is written for professional educators and teachers, and not for the general public. However, parents and advocates for gifted students will appreciate the author's insights to the multitude of problems affecting gifted programs. There is an excellent chapter on gifted rural and black males. However, the more particular problems of discrimination and gender bias against female gifted students, especially black and Hispanic women in junior high and high schools, is not specifically addressed.The usual problems for gifted and talented students regarding staff, budget and support are compounded in dealing with students in rural areas. Many of these regions lack funds, and any work with gifted students competes with mandates for students with other special needs.The book is filled with educator's jargon and rhetoric, which needed a good editor from another field. The copy I have also lacks an index. At the end of each chapter is a good bibliography, and a good summation and conclusion of the ideas mentioned in the text. However, this is a good review and analysis of a problem of the educational and social needs of gifted students in rural settings.

A comprehensive book with a gold mine of information for rural administrators and teachers By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: This book offers a review of the difficulties of identifying and educating gifted students in a rural setting due to a unique community profile. Those in rural settings do not always have access to the same kinds of resources of those in cities. The authors offer many insights as well as a comprehensive list of program choices that may be implemented to meet the needs of these students.REVIEW: This book is very comprehensive. It covers many aspects of the difficulties in educating these students. I like the fact that it looked at everything from both sides--pros and cons--of certain ways of helping these students. Particular attention was paid to minorities. I very much liked the page after page of program choices and the pros and cons of each. Administrators will find this very helpful.This book was not written for parents or laymen in mind. It reads very much like a thesis paper. But if you are willing to slog through the many references, it is a gold mine of information.NOTE: I Received a free advanced copy of this book from LibraryThing and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. My reviews are always 100% honest based on preset criteria.

'Imperfect Union' is a timeless story of love and survival during the American Civil War. Author Georgiann Baldino tells the story of two real people, a doctor and nurse, serving at some of the worst battlefields. When Fred recovers from his wound and returns to the army, he convinces the medical director to send for Cornelia. She joins him at the division hospital where she lives during winter encampment. Together Fred and Cornelia face unimaginable loss of life. Several times Union officials send her home. Living near army camps was a scandalous thing for a young, unmarried woman to do in 1864, but Cornelia finds ways to remain on duty. As they care for sick and wounded soldiers, Fred and Cornelia rely on and comfort each other. The characters' growing affection for each other, against a backdrop of carnage, creates a inspiring work of fiction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. “Take me home. Let me die in my own bed.” By Grady Harp American author Georgiann Baldino has a passion for history and the effect critical events have on people. In addition to writing (and she appears to have written at least forty-seven books ranging from history to suspense to travel) she is a people person: she co-facilitates a journaling support group at Edward Cancer Center and in addition to writing novels she authors magazine article of various subjects and gives presentations and provides workshops in her area.Georgiann opens her tremendously impressive book with a note to her readers that bears sharing: This novel shows the American Civil War through the eyes of two real people, a surgeon and volunteer nurse. The first person is Dr. Frederick Dudley, who held a variety of medical positions for the Army of the Potomac from August 23, 1862, until May 31, 1865. Most of that time he served as a regimental surgeon for the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, which fought in some of the conflict’s worst battles. The second main character of the book is volunteer nurse Cornelia Hancock, whose introduction to warfare came in the aftermath of the deadliest battle, Gettysburg. Cornelia adapted to harsh conditions better than most volunteers and continued to serve in field hospitals for nearly two years. At the time Fred Dudley attended medical school, medicine was emerging from the Dark Ages, but new research prompted some doctors to question therapies in use. The need to wash hands and sterilize instruments did not become known until after the War. Doctors did not understand the roles bacteria, viruses or insects played. Their cures were ineffective or even harmful. No one realized pathogens lived outside the body and spread from one person to another. The Civil War’s staggering death toll transformed the practice of medicine, as surely as it transformed hearts and minds. Fred was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, and Cornelia came onto the field to care for the men in his division. Fred’s courage impressed Cornelia, and her dedication impressed him. After Fred recovered and returned to duty, he convinced the corps medical director to send for her. Cornelia lived at the division hospital during winter encampment and stayed near the army as much as possible. Several times Union officials sent her home, but Cornelia found ways around the restrictions and returned. Living near army camps was a scandalous thing for an unmarried woman to do in 1864, but Cornelia and Fred became comrades. The concern Cornelia expressed for Fred in her letters to family also indicates an intimate relationship. Cornelia’s biographer Henrietta Stratton Jaquette writes, “There is room, perhaps, for speculation over a bundle of letters which were left at her death ‘to be burned without reading.’ Her real interest in Dr. Frederick Dudley with whom she worked in the Hospital at Brandy Station is apparent.” They relied on each other to get through the War’s darkest days. As fighting dragged on, Fred battled disease and surgical complications while Cornelia also fought against the injustice of slavery. Living through the ordeal created spiritual and emotional bonds. However, like many veterans, Fred and Cornelia found it hard to return to civilian life. After fighting ended, healing hearts and minds was more difficult than they imagined. An Imperfect Union shows two people, serving side-by-side and struggling to do their duty. The story portrays battles as they happened, but characterization, thoughts and dialogue turn it into fiction. To write a historical novel an author recreates voices and emotions appropriate for the time period. Apart from the well-known people, events and locales in the narrative, all the names, characters, places and incidents are the product of the author’s imagination or have been used fictitiously. Resemblance to events, locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Fred Dudley’s Military Service Record, obtained from the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C. is the timeline for the book. Medical and surgical case histories were excerpted from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, Part III, Volume II, Surgical History as well as other sources.’Rarely has the medical field in the Civil War been so carefully and lovingly examined. The story is excellent but it is the raising of the Curtain on the medical aspects of that period that will assure this novel finds a permanent place in every caring person’s library. A Great Read By Karen Ruggiero Even though An Imperfect Union, by Georgiann Baldino, is a work of fiction, it reads as if it is historical non-fiction. The characters may not be real, but the war most certainly was. Baldino does an excellent job portraying what the times were really like, along with making the readers feel as if they are a part of history. It was well written, easy to follow and keep up with, and had an excellent premise overall. It kept me hooked from page 1, all the way up until the very last.The main characters of this novel are Fred Dudley and Cornelia Hancock. The time period takes place during the American Civil War. These characters tell their story that takes place throughout the Civil War. Fred Dudley is a surgeon who works on the front lines. Cornelia is a volunteer nurse; obviously, they both have to see a lot of damage that takes place. Eventually, they end up finding each other and end up inspiring one another. They both see characteristics in one another that they appreciate and respect, even though they are living among war. A lot ends up happening between the two of them; some heart breaking, some heart warming.Kudos to Baldino for writing such an amazing novel. I would give this one five stars, and would highly recommend.

War Isn't Pretty By Marta Cheng If there was ever any doubt that war isn’t pretty, read Georgiann Baldino’s account of the battles that formed the American Civil War in An Imperfect Union and their aftermath, where amputated limbs filled gutters and fields became impromptu burial plots for the hundreds upon hundreds of ill-prepared soldiers who succumbed to their injuries. Dr. Frederick Dudley is a surgeon working on the front lines. Cornelia Hancock, a Quaker whose brother is serving in the war, volunteers as a nurse and eventually, they find each other amid the wounded, the bleeding and the dying. Fred’s courage impresses Cornelia and Cornelia’s dedication impresses Fred and together, they live and work in the carnage of war, bonding both spiritually and emotionally.The author states: “The story portrays battles as they happened, but characterization, thoughts and dialogue turn it into fiction.” While An Imperfect Union may be fiction, it nevertheless reads like excerpted vignettes from a history text book and some readers may find it difficult to remain engaged for that reason. However, there’s no doubting that Baldino has researched her subject matter thoroughly and the book will be sure to delight all readers with an interest in the Civil War.

Cherry St. Croix returns to the fog-ridden streets of Victorian London, where the balance of power threatens all that she loves.

I will not wither without laudanum. Sober and determined, I have chosen another way - alchemy and the pursuit of wellness it embodies. My name is Cherry St. Croix, and though freedom is finally at my fingertips, I return to the blackened streets intent on righting the wrongs I left behind. All is not well in London low. Caught in a war between gangs, men are torn limb from limb, and I am called on to ascertain how. The immoral Karakash Veil is no doubt involved, and Micajah Hawke, a prisoner in his own menagerie, cannot soften the danger this time. Armed with the alchemical arts I have learned, my ever present guardian, and what few friends are left to me, I embark on a campaign to rescue the ringmaster I cannot abandon, save the Brick Street bakers from annihilation, and finally face that which frightens me the most - my own heart. Book five of the St. Croix Chronicles.

By Amazon Customer Engraved is the 5th book of The St. Croix Chronicles and finds Cherry back in London, laudanum free. She has been joined by her mentor/lover/guardian Ashmore to rescue the enigmatic Micajah Hawke. The London that she has returned to, free of the fugue of heroin, is not what she was expecting. Everywhere she turns her friends and loved ones are victims of the changes that the Karakash Veil has spearheaded since she left the city. There is now a war between the street gangs and the sweets from the Menagerie who had protected her are being are being broken and tossed aside. The most horrifying event however, is what has happened to her reluctant lover, Hawke. Cherry finds that Hawke has been imprisoned by the Veil but it is not clear whether he has been caged by his master or has chosen to be caged. It would all seem quite bleak and hopeless, but not for Cherry. Things couldn't really get much worse than the events of book 4 (Tempered) when her mother, from beyond the grave, tried to kill her and take over her body. Stopping the war and freeing Hawke seems almost like a walk in the park in comparison. Dark forces are at work and Cherry will have to use all her skills from years as a Collector and the new ones learned during her time with Ashmore in order to save her friends and her love, Hawke.This instalment was a refreshing change to the previous novels where everything seemed so hopeless as Cherry sunk deeper and deeper to the grip of her heroin addiction. It's not like Cherry is running in fields of flowers or playing with kittens with balls of strings in this novel but at least she now has a clear mind and is empowered with the alchemical arts taught to her by her former guardian, Ashmore. As much as I could see Cherry's attraction to Hawke in the first 2 novels I am more convinced that it is Cherry's innate self destructive nature that draws her to his anti-hero. Hawke offers her up as a sacrifice in book 3 and is physically abusive to her in book 5 but she is still convinced he is worthy of her love. I wasn't entirely sure. I think I would find it hard to forgive a lover who hurts me physically and mentally. I suppose she can't resist a bad boy!Many of the characters from previous novels make a re-appearance in this instalment, even those who died or were killed in the other books. Her short lived marriage to Lord Compton is prominent in her mind in the early chapters as she is forced to rely on her brother-in-law for help. Even though the tragic demise of Lord Compton is a feature of the first half of the book Compton's murderer and Cherry's dear friend Freddy is barely mentioned. I was expecting Cherry to be forced to come to terms with what Freddy did and the part she played in his downfall and the murders he committed to draw her attention. There was a lot to cover, however, with Cherry trying to save Hawke, the Baker boys, her friends and to escape the Veil and the evil he has spread across London.I enjoyed this instalment, much more than book 4. Cherry's return to London signaled to me that Cooper was going to return to the gritty, steampunky, noir feel of the previous novels. I also feel this is down to the return of characters from previous books, as well as, the familiar setting of London. I didn't especially like that Cherry was still a victim of Hawke's but at least she is able to stick up for herself a bit more now due to her newly found powers. This read like the final book of the series to me. I think that Cherry could now be left to live her life. However, Cooper has one more of Cherry's story to tell (Transmuted) and I will be happy to read it. This is a dark series and not for anyone who has a problem with a heroine with a drug addiction or a hero who isn't that nice to his love interest. If however, you have a like a conflicted heroine and a perpetual bad boy living in the smog of a steampunk London then this is the series for you.

The last two books in the series were brutal for Cherry and her sanity, but she's finally starting to pull herself back together here (with a little help from her friends). She's left the tar and her collecting days behind her and is now learning alchemy and is hell-bent on saving the enigmatic Micajah Hawke from the Karakash veil.I am not Hawke's biggest fan, especially as a romantic foil for Cherry, but I did enjoy seeing her quest to save him. Engraved gave us a strong, capable woman saving the man... not something you see very often, especially in romantic fiction. The mythology behind the Menagerie is very complicated and I'm still not sure that I understand everything, but it was great fun to see Cherry kicking butt and being oh so crafty again and again. Hawke was very frustrating in the book, lying to Cherry or pushing her away over and over again, but he was doing it to protect her in his way. I was just hoping he would realize she didn't need his protection in the end. Cherry and Micajah are equals and, even though I ship her with someone else, I think they make a formidable pair.Engraved is like a scrapbook for the series because so many beloved characters make appearances. Of course my favorites Maddy Ruth and Ishmael Communion show up, but we also have an appearance from characters that I thought were gone for good. Ashmore should be given sainthood for the caring and patience he displays with Cherry. He never hesitates to put others ahead of himself and is always pulling Cherry out of one mess or another, while still giving her the room to get into them in the first place. Sigh, I just love the dashing Ashmore.The only thing that was a little difficult for me in Engraved was the final battle. Everything happened so quickly and I felt like I was getting literary whiplash. It was all exciting and I loved seeing Cherry use her instinctual alchemy, but I felt a little lost at some parts. Overall though, I was very satisfied and I am definitely hooked on this series. The next book can't come soon enough! I'm sure this wasn't the last we'll see of the Veil, especially now that Cherry has freed their tiger, Hawke.This review originally appeared on BadassBookReviews.com. Best Installment Yet By Jess This book, nay, this entire series, has been such a roller coaster thus far, and I for one love it.I take notes as I read so that when it comes time to write reviews, I’ll (hopefully) be able to form somewhat coherent sentences. Yet, when I glance over my notes for this installment, I find that it’s mostly filled with expletives, excited exclamation points, quite a bit of angry underlining, and, well, even more colorful expletives. That, in turn, pretty much sums up my feelings in reading this book.I will attempt to distill my wildly flailing emotions over this story into something readable, while still refraining from giving away too much in the way of actual storyline.Here we go.We open the story to find Cherry still dried out from her laudanum addiction thanks to her guardian turned tutor turned friend, Lord Ashmore. Unfortunately for her, this means she’s still not quite at her physical peak, nor does she have the opium to give her the false courage and bravado she’s relied on since she began her reckless career as a Collector.Hawke is still help prisoner at the Menagerie, but the real question remains as always — is he a prisoner of the Veil because they truly have control over him, or because he chooses to remain under their thumb for reasons that are his own?Cherry has a lot of amends to make — Communion, Zylphia, the younger Lord Compton, and even her old servants may have been marked by the Veil for her previous antics, and it is yet unknown as to which ones may prove to be allies and which ones may have decided that their own hides are more valuable than whatever previous loyalty they may have felt towards Cherry.We very quickly find a familiar and terrifying face from Cherry’s past has become a major player in the Menagerie, and the Veil itself has expanded its territory with the help of the Ferrymen. Not only that, but their horrifying experiments on the people under their rule have created a new breed of fighter to do their dirty work.With Cherry’s fall from grace both from society and from her position as Collector, she finds herself in a sort of a no man’s land, unable to move as freely as she used to, with none of the easy welcome she’s accustomed to either above or below London’s fog.Hawke’s horrifying behavior the last time we saw him left Cherry hurt and confused, and, stubborn as ever, she’s still continuing to refuse to heed the warnings from coming from practically everyone involved with the situation, nor has she yet taken to heart Ashmore’s lessons on learning to walk before you run in regards to her new-found knowledge of alchemy.I find that that’s all I can really say without giving away spoilers. Everything else that I had angrily underlined or followed by multiple exclamation points gave away a major plot point. I will say, however, that this was one heck of a ride, full of action, adventure, and emotional turmoil, and the very last thing in my notebook was yet another very colorful expletive, followed by several exclamation points. Infer from that what you will.A very solid 5/5 Stars and I cannot WAIT to get my greedy little hands on the next (and I think final?) installment.{Title was provided free of charge by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.}
