Lee Hadden An interesting book on serving gifted students in rural areas for educators, guidance counselors and teachers. The problems of rural education are well known. Although most often in education, poverty means inner-city, in fact some of the worst poverty happens in rural America. These problems are also increased when the students are minorities and poor and living in rural areas. Problems of living in areas where the population are dispersed also include lack of opportunity, and teachers are untrained, and they are often assigned multi-task roles that diminish teaching contact with students. The book is written for professional educators and teachers, and not for the general public. However, parents and advocates for gifted students will appreciate the author's insights to the multitude of problems affecting gifted programs. There is an excellent chapter on gifted rural and black males. However, the more particular problems of discrimination and gender bias against female gifted students, especially black and Hispanic women in junior high and high schools, is not specifically addressed. The usual problems for gifted and talented students regarding staff, budget and support are compounded in dealing with students in rural areas. Many of these regions lack funds, and any work with gifted students competes with mandates for students with other special needs. The book is filled with educator's jargon and rhetoric, which needed a good editor from another field. The copy I have also lacks an index. At the end of each chapter is a good bibliography, and a good summation and conclusion of the ideas mentioned in the text. However, this is a good review and analysis of a problem of the educational and social needs of gifted students in rural settings.

A comprehensive book with a gold mine of information for rural administrators and teachers By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: This book offers a review of the difficulties of identifying and educating gifted students in a rural setting due to a unique community profile. Those in rural settings do not always have access to the same kinds of resources of those in cities. The authors offer many insights as well as a comprehensive list of program choices that may be implemented to meet the needs of these students.REVIEW: This book is very comprehensive. It covers many aspects of the difficulties in educating these students. I like the fact that it looked at everything from both sides--pros and cons--of certain ways of helping these students. Particular attention was paid to minorities. I very much liked the page after page of program choices and the pros and cons of each. Administrators will find this very helpful. This book was not written for parents or laymen in mind. It reads very much like a thesis paper. But if you are willing to slog through the many references, it is a gold mine of information.NOTE: I Received a free advanced copy of this book from LibraryThing and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. My reviews are always 100% honest based on preset criteria.
