About the Author Ricardo L Garcia is a professor of education in the College of Education and Human Science of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Garcia began his education career in 1963 as a high school English and history teacher in northern New Mexico. Since then he has continuously served in classrooms as a teacher, consultant, storyteller, and professor. In 1973, Garcia served as codirector for a Desegregation Teacher Training Institute at Kansas State University. Since then, he has conducted research and taught in multicultural teacher education. Garcia has tested his cross-cultural instructional theories by teaching on Native American reservations, in state penitentiaries, and by conducting bilingual family literacy programs. He also has served as a university department chair and as a central administrator of student affairs programs for students of color and disadvantaged youth.

He is the author of numerous articles and chapters and one textbook, Teacher in a Pluralistic Society. In addition, he has authored four books of fiction: Coal Camp Days, 2001; Brother Bill s Bait Bites Back, 2004; Coal Camp Justice, 2005, and Montana s Top Bananas, 2007.

By BWK I did not like the book...the author makes the reader perform mental gymnastics by jumping all over the map covering issues related to diversity and the teaching of English Language Learners. Each chapter could have focused more on one aspect of the ELLs plight rather than jumping around. The thoughts don't flow and as a result I found it difficult to read.

Living in such a multicultural society, we can always use information like this. My professor wrote this book, and it has had some great thought provoking material in it. This book would be wonderful to use in a class relating to diversity.

About the Author About Frank and Nathan

Hi I’m Frank. I would describe myself as a Globetrotter, a free spirit, living here and there. Always open to relocating to new horizons when the time is right and my heart tells me so. I’ve been a graphic designer for over 15 years, along with being a master photographer and photoshop specialist. This has lead to some incredible opportunities to live anywhere that meets my fancy. Currently I'm at the Caribbean, living on a small island named Curacao. It is amazing and would highly suggest that if you have the wanting for living somewhere magical, that this would be the place for you.

Where my inspiration comes from…

Being an old spirit myself, I see inspiration everywhere. In people, architecture and nature. Everything is creatively alive! When I started living from a heart centered life, finally throwing off the old, always living with deadlines life and battling continual stress; I finally found a certain enlightenment. Which pushed me to help others to free themselves from a stress-filled, monkey mind existence. It became important for me to show others how to go into a ZEN state, a state of mindfulness where they can liberate themselves. Freeing others of their daily worries, at least for a couple of minutes. It all starts with a circle and when I enter my meditation state I let the mouse do the drawing.

I have rad a few books on speed reading in the past and I have to say that I really did get some new information from this book. The two tips I am taking away from this book are sitting at a desk and the lighting. Both ideas seem like common sense but many people would not use the information. I also like the suggestions on timing. Overall I found this book to have solid data.

Lee DuCote did his research to ensure historical accuracy regarding the pirate backstory and surrounding events and I was able to imagine what each character looked like, how they spoke, and even how they felt in every scenario. The plot is full of twists and even when I tried to imagine how a few scenes would turn out, I was wrong! Lee has a great imagination and his care in creating lovable (and despicable) characters shines through. This page-turner is a great mix of adventure, romance, suspense, and the best kind of revenge.

Michelle has an excellent blog for finding colleges that are great for "regular" kids -- She calls them 50-50 colleges: at least 50% of the kids who apply get in, and at least 50% of the kids who get in wind up graduating. (While 50% graduation rate sounds like a low bar, it is actually higher than the statistical average.) From there, she helps you understand how to estimate your chances for need-based and merit financial aid.This book is a crash course in all of these, but finding a college is about more than just "running the numbers". She adds good information on how to explore a college website and pick up on unique programs or special opportunities available.Like a lot of kindle books by bloggers, you could find most of this on her website. But, it's well worth the price to have it handy and all in one place, especially if you are open to considering schools that provide a good education but aren't household names.

Pacific Book Review By Nicole Sorkin Volume I of “‘290″‘ ended with the firm of Davis and Grey celebrating a hard-earned victory and mourning the seizure of their prize blockade-runner. Fortunately, the government seizure of their ship allows the firm to purchase two more and hopefully bolster the Confederate’s navy. The Civil War is in full swing, the Union blockade is wavering, and soldiers on both sides continue to die in what many fears is a never- ending war.Joanna Davis sends her partner James Trenton Grey to Liverpool to commission more ships for the Confederate Navy. As Grey makes his way to England, Davis deals with the aftermath of the Dark Star’s successful blockade run, expanding the firm in Nassau, and her blossoming relationship with the now-absent Grey. Grey, meanwhile, has his work cut out for him. England cannot build or arm warships for a war unless they are directly involved, which they currently are not. He not only has to find a sympathetic shipwright, but a legal loophole that will allow for the construction and arming of a Confederate warship in British waters.Further ratcheting up the tension, the Union Consul in Liverpool discovers Grey’s motives and begins to maneuver behind the scenes to either prevent the ship’s construction or impound it before it can leave British waters. Grey has a few allies on his side that step on to the board to counter the Consul’s political wheeling and dealing. Grey manages to uncover a loophole in the law that allows the ship to be built, but it cannot be crewed or armed in British waters. Thus, Grey is able to commission a ship, the 290th ship built by the Southern-sympathetic shipwright company Laird and Co. This comes to light, leading all the power players to kick off a shifting tug of war that puts 48 hours on the clock. 290 must be out of British waters or risk impoundment, which may have rippling consequences for the war raging back in America.“The Laird Gunboat” is Volume II of the Donn Wonnell’s “‘290′” series. It seamlessly picks up and improves on the story started in Volume I. The scope remains firmly on the human tribulations of a war that threatens to rip the United States apart and pull other countries into the maelstrom. Instead of the first volume’s focus on naval battles, “The Laird Gunboat” shifts to the economic, political, and legal behind the scenes action. However, it never veers into info-dumps and remains firmly fascinating. As with the first volume, the characters are engaging, the dialogue snappy, and the prose captivating. Simply put, this is incredible historical fiction. Readers cannot help but be drawn into the struggles of Johanna Davis and Trent Grey. One small issue was Johanna’s diminished presence in this volume, but it appears she will play a larger role in the following volume. Overall, “The Laird Gunboat” is an intriguing entry and bodes well for the future of the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fully delivers on the promise shown in the first novel. By Robert Hansford I really enjoyed this novel. The author strongly delivers on the promise he displayed in the first book. This is not an action thriller but a true historical fiction in the very best sense. You join in with the characters as they find a way to build a "state of the art" vessel which will become one of the key foundations of a Confederate Navy. Bureaucratic ineptitude and and office intrigues by petty officials join with espionage and sabotage in attempting to put a stop to the building of number "290" before it can join the conflict in the Atlantic. The author displays his wonderful command of dialogue which carries the story forward in a quick and compelling fashion. His insight into the politics that infect every government and most private organizations shows us that while the technology of warfare has changed the underlying human behavior has not. A great read!I am looking forward to having our hero and his ship join in the maritime conflict of America's Civil War.
