Rice Having read quite a few books on text complexity and close reading, this book clearly aligns the purpose of common core state standards with the urgency of teaching critical thinking and reading in a secondary classroom. The authors delineate the difference between a close reading and shared reading and then provide downloadable, practical, and useful tools a teacher can use to plan a close reading. The best part of the book is an appendix for administrators to help them with focused observations of close reading lessons along with metacognitive reflection rubrics for the teachers.
