She is powerful, bossy, and vulnerable. While life looks perfect from the outside, readers learn that things are not what they seem. Physical fights break out among the Selected, and secrets are kept only to be revealed at the very end. The cliff-hanger conclusion sets the stage for future volumes. At times the work feels like a retelling of the first book, but with a different cast of characters. However, readers will enjoy seeing the courtship rituals through the eyes of Eadlyn, her date mishaps, and how things have evolved over two decades. Clark A lot of reviews focus on how unlikeable Eadlyn is, and I would agree with them. It's tragic that a child of America and Maxon could end up like that.Of course, America and Maxon are nothing like we would have expected them to be either. At the end of The One we might hope that America's influence on Maxon would help him to see and understand the plights of the working poor. Instead we see that America has apparently given up and Maxon is as blind to the real issues as ever - perhaps even more so now. When talking of what the people want, Maxon is quick to assign the blame to the people themselves and Eadlyn is quick to agree. Ignorant of all the things that keep the caste structures in place despite phasing out the titles. No wonder the people are restless.No doubt the plan on this book is to set up Eadlyn as unlikeable and ignorant so that in the following book she can see the errors of her ways, fall in love, and find some way to make things better for the people. I just wish Kiera could have found a way to do that without destroying my opinion of America and Maxon.

Even through the flat feeling I got during the third book. I loved the companion short stories and thought the characters were excellently written. So I did expect a lot from a continuation of something I though had been done so well.I was disappointed. I honestly don't know if I'm supposed to be engaging with the princess or her suitors. If it's the princess then I feel like Cass missed the mark by a wide margin. She is (to me) completely unlikable. Spoiled and demanding and manipulative. I don't even know how this girl is the product of two people I like so much in the previous books. I understand that she's supposed to have a lot of pressure on her, and that she's got a passel of her own insecurities, but to me she just feels like the kind of person I'd never want to be around. Again, hugely disappointing.Now, the suitors are excellent. The more we get to know them, the more I love them. These are the kind of characters I expect from a Kiera Cass book. Funny and imperfect in their own ways, but each feels genuine. Even the one who has his own agenda that falls well outside of the intents of a Selection is endearing in his honest evaluation of the situation. They really make up the only reason I want to continue reading, both this book and the remainder of the princess's portion of this series.Bottom line is that while I will probably buy and read the next book, I will have to lower my expectations several notches. I cannot bring myself to like the main character, but have a hard time abandoning the rest of them.

But it's hard reading an entire story about a selfish, obnoxious girl who doesn't understand why her whole country hates her... Hey, Eadelyn - I could totally fill you in if you'd like? Call me.I'm actually not sure I've ever read a book with a protagonist I passionately hated more. Overall, this book was just an entire waste of time, especially since it was only the first HALF of the story (Hello? Why did no one mention this before this book was released?). The one redeeming quality is that it ended with the hope that Miss. Eadelyn I'm-the-most-powerful-person-in-the-world is going to take the Selection seriously in the NEXT book. Which I guess I'll have to read, since I'm already this invested. Honestly, it reminds me of the final season of Gossip Girl that I hated, but kept watching because I didn't want to be a quitter. Maybe I need to learn to let go.The absolute most disappointing part of this book was that it is missing all of the adorable, romantic moments that make The Selection books what they ARE. Isn't that the entire point of why we read these books? Well, it is for me. I want to be giggling and swooning like the ridiculous girl in me - but there was no giggling or swooning to be found. Only eye rolls and scoffs.Oh well, at least now I'm not waiting on the edge of my seat for the next one. Whenever it comes out is fine with me. Take your time Kiera.
