The Balle Trilogy is a fictional story about three members of a Ball family, one of whom lived at the same time in history as Queen Eleanor of France and England. Brandenburg Patricia Spurlock's book, The Balle Trilogy, 'scratched where I itched' following my recent historical fiction reading of authors, Edward Rutherfurd and Ken Follet. I was still hungry for more immersion into the real, day to day people of Britain's sweep of time. Spurlock's story of the Medieval John Ball, invited my walk with both peasants and lords, glimpsing something of the best and worst of their history. I gave Spurlock's book Five Stars for launching me into new levels of understanding through its easy journey of troublesome times, the effect of systems upon people, and the inequality of the day. John Ball's life, laced with a cast of fictional co-stars, offered up the story of class development and its movement from oppression towards freedom. Spoiler alert: 'Towards' is the operative word. Spurlock deals with triumphs and tragedies and flaws and strengths, making me eager to turn each page. In addition, the book's prologue does a masterful job of both defining and describing how a condition of Good within a world of harmony and respect can shift, as "the twin Giants of greed and selflessness" bring on ever present tensions of danger and protection/struggle and deliverance. The Balle Trilogy reminds us that the story of class development has been done both well and poorly, over and over again. I recommend the book for those who enjoy historical fiction, well researched and absorbing.
