What guarantees success? Four years of high school? A college degree? A nine-to-five job? Perhaps, but many teens yearn for a different path. In his latest book, “Self-Directed Learning: Documentation and Life Stories,” Wes Beach argues that people who recognize their genuine interests and talents need only their self-knowledge, confidence, enthusiasm, determination, ability to persevere, and sense of autonomy to carry them where they want to go. Wes shares stories of people whose needs were not met by traditional education, and thus created their own paths. Wes also includes transcripts and information that his students used to gain admission to colleges and universities throughout the country. “Self-Directed Learning” speaks to people who desire to pursue their passions and grow into productive and fulfilled adults.

This book will liberate you to make your own choice By Peter Gray I recommend Self-Directed Learning to all teenagers and young adults concerned about their futures, and to their parents. Beach shows clearly, with examples, that there are many paths to success in our world, with or without formal schooling. Even if you take a standard route, involving conventional schooling, after reading this book, you will do so with a sense of choice rather than coercion; and that makes all the difference. - Peter Gray, author of Free to Learn: Why Releasing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life.

John Holt meets Grace Llewellyn By Deb Nam-Krane Fifty years after John Holt began publishing, homeschooling is seen as a genuine alternative to traditional elementary and high school. Where it gets murky is what to do with older students who wouldn't be happy in a traditional high school or college. Indeed, the "proof" that your child was successfully homeschooled is usually the happy ending that he or she was accepted to multiple colleges and then went on to get high grades. While this book does spend some time discussing how to create a transcript for students in non-traditional settings, the bulk of it is about the journeys his former students took as they traced their own path to their definition of "success". Some did go on to college, but others picked up skills through work or alternative training venues, such as corporate institutions, community colleges or apprenticeships. And while some of these stories wouldn't have been possible without significant funding (access to your own plane is probably prohibitive for most parents), others didn't require more than curiosity, a willingness to work and a vigilance about possible opportunities.Highly recommended for parents of older homeschoolers.

By Amazon Customer Thank you, Wes Beach, for a great testimony of the power and creativity of teenagers, and humans. This book shows high school aged people how to transcend the "rules" of life by simply knowing the "rules:" those laws and regulations that seek to keep young people within the four walls of the traditional learning methodology. Yes, you can create for yourself an education based on your passions, skills and personal desires. Yes, there is a way to do this legally. And yes, young people can parlay these rich experiences back into the game of higher education even, many times more effectively than those who follow the prescribed paths layed out by the traditional K-12 systems. And thanks to those young people who believed in themselves to do so, and to be profiled in Wes' informative, non-self-serving and level-headed book. Most impressive in this work is Wes' commitment to not self-promote, but to lay out a way of thinking that allows young people (and their parents) to do this themselves. As an educator in the traditional system, I see young people all the time wanting to express their skills and interests but do not know where to go with it. Moreso, these people do not know that there is another way. Wes' accounts give Counselors like myself precedent to share that there is another way. It is the way that young people have learned since, well, young people were invented. The young man who sailed the boat across the Pacific as a 16 year old (Dove) was my first experience of someone unshackled by conformity, and Wes just simply puts some organization to these sorts of bold ventures into true education.Thank you, Wes. I highly recommend your work, and respect anyone brave enough even to just simply consider the thoughts that you lay out in Self-Directed Learning.
