When Meg Lacy encounters a broodingly handsome Light Dragoon at the Duchess of Richmond’s grand ball, she little expects that in the hours following the Battle of Waterloo she will be accompanying him around the streets of Brussels. Romance is the last thing on her mind as they seek a lost and valuable item belonging to the Duke of Wellington himself. Lieutenant James Cooper is surly and unhelpful, but Meg senses the Dragoon will need her help if they are to succeed. As they bicker their way around the narrow streets, a strange empathy begins to develop as gradually glimpses of the man beneath start to be revealed. Meg finds herself drawn to that person, but when they finally recover and then return the item to the Duke, Cooper makes a grave error of judgement which jeopardizes their budding friendship… This novella was first published in the anthology Beaux, Ballrooms and Battles: Celebration of Waterloo

By Cynthia Hoelscher As a historian, I admire Heather King's ability to successfully weave the history of Regency Period with the promise of an undeniable love story. A mysterious and handsome officer, "with a mien almost as brooding as Lord Byron," attends a magnificent ball in Brussels and captures the attention of Miss Meg Lacy, the daughter of Major-General Sir Vincent Lacy, a brigade commander. This handsome man isn't quite who he passes himself off as, and the lovely Miss Meg Lacy perceives there is much more to the infuriatingly aloof man. Miss Meg is no wallflower in society. While she brilliantly smiles and possesses all social graces, she also boasts a practical strength that reminds one of a 'warrior queen,' most prepared to lead an army to battle. The love which simmers between Lady Meg and James is evident from the beginning of the novella. The naturalness in each other's presence and their jaunty dialogue reveals they find themselves more at ease with each other than with others. They challenge each other and inevitably bring out the best in each other. And if this is not enough, the sterling thread of history is intricately woven as not to spoil the seriousness of the Napoleonic period. Among the brilliant chandeliers of the ballrooms, the dazzling confections of gowns and life among the beau monde of Brussels, there is the deep shadow of war and its realities.Heather King is an author whose love of history, romance and horses brings a unique story to light. It is the perfect story for readers who have a passion for horses, for the biggest bad boy is Copenhagen, a near thoroughbred with his own unpredictable demeanor. Copenhagen unwittingly brings these two lovers together in a tale that is both delightful and genuinely Regency Romance.

By Joyously Retired Teacher Not being a horse person, and not having heard the story of Wellington's mount dashing through Brussels following the Battle of Waterloo, I wasn't too sure what to expect when I read this story, my first from this author. But no, it's not a story about the horse—we don't find out what made him tear off like that and I suppose we never will. It's a story about an unexpected meeting, a wild adventure through the streets of Brussels, and a romance between a young soldier and a soldier's daughter. I am in awe of Ms. King's deft hand with character and description. The story flows along so smoothly that this reader could not put it down until the end came, which was far too soon.
