Inspired by the true story of an Irish immigrant, a violent past, a lost love, and the American Dream . . . This poignant and poetic novel retells the journey of a young man, John “Whitey” O’Brien, who is forced to flee his homeland of Ireland after his involvement in a bloody confrontation between Irish revolutionary forces and the English military. Inspired by family legacy, James O’Brien explores in rich detail one person’s pursuit of the American Dream during the early 20th century. This simple yet challenging tale traces Whitey’s struggles with faith and fate as well as love and violence as he attempts to reconcile his past with his future. Whitey must choose between two paths, each with the promise of a new life. But can he leave his past behind? Or will it forever haunt him and determine his future?

Realism and Honesty By Amanda Kemp Gritty in its realism, All the Past We Leave Behind offers not a glimpse of the past, but hurls its audience headlong into a choppy sea of shared memory. The immigrant experience fraught with danger and hope is one common thread in the tapestry of American familial histories. James O'Brien recounts the tale of Whitey without glossing over the harsher realities as many historical writers are wont to do. Instead, he honors the struggles and triumphs of ancestors by telling all the past they left behind.

By foltz All the Past We Leave Behind is the stories of the author's grandfather supplemented with additions from the author's imagination in a beautiful mesh of fact and fiction. Reading feels like sitting at the feet of my own grandfather as a kid (in the best of ways) and listening to his tales of the good old days. The book is extremely absorbing - I figured I'd knock out a chapter or two after I bought it and next thing I know its 2am and I'm way past my chapter or two.If you're looking for a good, honest, well written book then this is well worth the price of admission, so much so that I'm hoping it will eventually come out in print so I can have a hard copy to add to my library.

Impressive writing, Great story By Diana Green As I sat down to read I was immediately impressed with the author's command of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. He paints vivid pictures with his words making the reader feel as if a part of the story. Full of plot-twists of joy and tragedy, the story keeps you hopeful for a happy ending. Flashbacks and daydreams throughout continually provide details and complete pieces of the puzzle. This story should definitely be made into a motion picture!
