The first book of this Civil War trilogy begins in the winter of 1862, as the nation is being ripped apart, with both Federals and Rebels seeing no end in sight and hoping for victory. Lieutenant James Harper, a junior officer in the Union army, aspires to command a company—but faces his dismal future at the hands of an officer who will vindictively do whatever he must to keep Harper at the bottom of the heap. Katie Malloy, a young girl who has been sold by her father to the wily owner of a whorehouse, has settled into her new life as a saloon-girl—for the time being. She’s got big plans to get herself out of this predicament, and vows one day she’ll be more than the soldiers’ whore. Corporal Gustav Magnusson, a young Quaker in Harper’s company, butts heads with Harper from the very beginning. But capture by the enemy forces them to work together to protect their men from sadistic Rebel Captain Bell—who wants nothing more than to see his Yankee prisoners dead. Will General Grant’s campaign against Fort Donelson open the door for an ex-Federal Marshal, a Quaker farmer, and a soiled dove from Iowa to make their mark in the world—if they live through it? Three lives intertwine against the backdrop of the battle which made Ulysses S. Grant’s reputation—a living hell where everything familiar fades, and the only thing that matters is surviving—however they can.

The action--and there was plenty of it--moved steadily forward at a quick enough pace that it kept me so engaged I was surprised when the book ended. I've read and enjoyed several books that describe in detail one or another of the American Civil War battles or campaigns, and I can add this book to my list. Like many Civil War buffs, Mr. Gabhann appears to know his battles, military units and officers well enough to paint a vivid, detailed picture that put me there witnessing the action. This story tells of the movement of the First Iowa, part of General Grant's Army, as they clash with the Confederates and take Ft. Donelson before the hero and a few men are captured by Bedford Forrest in the push towards Nashville, TN. The intertwining story of Lt. Jamie Harper of the First Iowa and the Paduca prostitute Katie plus all their associates made for interesting reading. Both Jamie and Katie are sympathetic characters even though they are far from perfect and not always well-liked by those around them. This book depicted the seamy side of both war and prostitution, and the language and some of the scenes were rough and gritty--not for the faint-of-heart reader. In spite of that, the human frailties as well as the strengths of the characters held me bound. The plot as well as the description that allowed me to picture the action in my mind's eye kept me engrossed from beginning to end. This novel also pulled no punches about the difficulties of fighting a war with state militias organized and driven by political patronage. (That is no longer the case. About the time of WW1 the state militias were nationalized.) Often the regular soldiers were casualties as much due to following leaders chosen for their wealth and/or position in the county or state, not because they had military training or ability to lead their troops as an effective war machine. It also highlights the struggles when new weapons and technology are introduced, but their most effective use is hampered by old-school leadership that lacks the vision and understanding of how to most effectively use them. This happened in the book when the First Iowa were issued the new breech-loading Sharps rifles that had a longer, more accurate range than the older smooth-bore muskets used by most CW soldiers. It called for a change in tactics, but not all generals could adapt. It was interesting to me to see how these situations were dealt with throughout the story. This is not a romance, the story is not over, but it is definitely worth reading. I just hope I don't need to wait too long for the next book.

Smith Combining history and novel, follows the very different lives of Jamie Harper and Katie Malloy as they find themselves caught in the hailstorm of Grant's Civil War. Both characters provide a personal point-of view of their experiences during the winter campaign in Tennessee. Historical accuracy without getting bogged down in battleground minutiae.I enjoyed reading Book 1 of this trilogy and look forward to the next book in the series.
