About the Author Michal Sherring was named for the Biblical David’s first wife, in case you wondered. An art historian, she spent three decades in the museum profession, holding positions from museum assistant, to curator, to director. At some point friends suggested she write a museum mystery since she loves traditional mysteries in the puzzle solving format. The idea for this one came to her as she was walking through an exhibition of still life paintings.

While preparing for an exhibition of paintings loaned to the museum, Robin hears a cry of distress. It’s their benefactress, Slinky Chase, who’s taken a fatal tumble down the stairs. Slinky had recently inherited the works of art, and Robin knows little about them. But even as she researches their history, various persons try to claim the works of art and take them from the museum. When an expert who plans to publish an exposé on the artists becomes the next victim, she realizes the paintings themselves might hold clues to the artists’ identities. Could this group possibly include members from the town’s leading families? If so, how far would these people go to hide their secrets? The mystery deepens, and through the story’s detailed descriptions of painting styles and art history, readers will gain an appreciation for the field and the cleverly wrought plot.

I always like books which teach me things, and since I know little about the art world, the book gave me a lot of insights into both what goes on behind the scenes at a museum as well as how to look at a painting. The story itself is well done; the author had me guessing until the end about the identity of the murder. The action in this book takes place in 1965, when there is no internet that can provide instant information and the "rich” still had certain formalities and proprieties that had to be maintained, at least in their minds. The author created some interesting characters who fit into that era nicely. It's a terrific mystery!

She’s also the new curator at the jewel box Danford museum in the small Massachusetts town of Edgell and she’s a whiz at twentieth century abstract art. Robin’s boss Chet is eccentric with his rabbity face and his status seeking manners, but he pales beside some of the town’s wealthy past and current residents. When an heiress who plans on donating an important collection to the museum dies in an “accident” at the museum, Robin sees murder where everyone else buys the “accident.” Robin is also bent on identifying the painters in the collection, some of whom had wished to remain anonymous. As she gets deeper into the town and the art community, Robin must walk a tightrope between snooping and curating, and she finds the two curiously intertwined. A potential love interest and an aging hippie as well as the coterie of painters in the collections with their loves and desires give the story depth and drive the plot forward. A second murder provides Robin with additional clues and she uses all her knowledge of art to identify the killer.Besides those who like a well-plotted mystery, this is a novel for art lovers as well as readers curious as to what a museum curator actually does. The author was a curator for many years and knows what she is writing about. I enjoyed reading about how Robin analyzes paintings and really homes in on their meanings and artistic merits. A delightful read.
