For centuries children of the West have been taught that sometime in the 5th century Rome "fell" and with it, the world fell into the Dark Ages. This is only partially true. The Western Roman Empire did fade but in the East, in the old city of Byzantium on the Bosporus, the Romans would survive for a thousand years longer. Half a century after the Western Roman Empire was toppled by the Goth warlord Odoacer, a new Caesar ascends to the throne in Byzantium. This man, the Emperor Justinian, refuses to accept that Rome's best days have passed. With the help of his extraordinary young General Belisarius, Justinian will attempt the impossible - to expel the barbarians from Rome's Lost Lands and to restore the Empire to its former glory. Join them on their stunning adventure in the LEGEND OF AFRICANUS trilogy. FROM AFRICANUS is the first novel in the Legend of Africanus series. In From Africanus, the upstart Caesar, Justinian I, fights to defend his throne as the Nika Riots erupts in Constantinople, plunging the Empire into chaos. Justinian turns to his General Belisarius to pull Rome back from the precipice, and to prevent the darkness that has already engulfed the West from sweeping away the Eastern Empire.

Review [A] "DAZZLINGLY RESEARCHED EVOCATION OF THE CONSTANTINOPLE OF JUSTINIAN AND THEODORA..." "A HISTORICAL NOVEL RICHLY DETAILED..." - KIRKUS REVIEW OF BOOKS
From the Author This is the second edition of From Africanus, an update that coincides with the publication of Volumes II and III of the series (Avenging Africanus and Immortal Africanus - both available on Amazon.com. The story of Justinian, Belisarius, Leo and Valentinian has continued to evolve in ways that I couldn't have imagined when I began this trilogy in 2005 and some changes to this first volume were necessary to keep pace. One would think that in a work of historical fiction there is little room for plot twists but I have been surprised by my protagonists - they have kept me on my toes for 10 years! May they keep you, my readers, equally enchanted. Most importantly, I hope that From Africanus and the books that follow are able to plant a spark of empathy for this forgotten world in your heart.Matthew Jordan Storm - Miami Beach, FloridaAugust 2015
About the Author Mr. Matthew Jordan Storm is a Roman History nut. If he had more time and aptitude he would have become an archaeologist or historian but now moonlights as a writer of historical fiction instead. Mr. Storm has lived and worked in three former capitals of the Roman Empire: Rome, Milan and Istanbul - experiences that marked him and contributed greatly to his novels. He views the "Legend of Africanus" series as a passion bordering on an indulgence.

Not as good as I had hoped By Susan Hughes While the Nika Riots were a fascinating period in Byzantine history, Matthew Jordan Storm's treatment was less so. There are errors in the use of homonyms i.e. "metal" when he should have used "mettle" and awkward segues to tell a backstory. I was very disappointed in this book, however I did finish it. The rise was of the main character was not believable either. I have seen it said in other reviews and it's quite true here, this book would have benefitted greatly from a good editor. I will not be reading the rest of the series, which is unfortunate as I love historical fiction and I love the Bysantine era and it's extremely had to find well written, engaging historical fiction. This book was neither.

I would start the book only to put it aside after a few pages. Although the topic was quite appealing, I couldn't seem to fall in love with the story. After a few more tries, however, it suddenly clicked and at about 1/4 through the book I found myself completely immersed in it and I couldn't stop reading. I can't say for sure what it was, but the story became truly engaging and I was eager to know more. So if you're like me and find yourself struggling with the first couple of chapters, I suggest you make an effort and carry-on because the read does become much more enjoyable and the story a true gem of a piece of history that has rarely been told.
