Something in the window catches your eye. A man dressed in baroque costume wearing a long black cloak has stopped just outside of the glass and is peering in. Though it is not fully dark outside, it is almost so and the man appears eerily mysterious under one of the hanging lamps above the window. The top half of his face is covered in a bejeweled half mask. You don’t want to stare since you aren’t sure if the man is looking at the sandwiches on display, or if he is looking further into the bar, directly at you; it is hard to tell. This is the first costumed person that you have seen since your arrival. You wonder if he is a Venetian. You try to distract yourself for a moment by rustling through your coat pocket for some euros to pay the tab. The barman has been in conversation with other locals and hasn’t looked up in 10 minutes. You feel comfortable leaving the unbroken bill as payment without getting your change, but as you look over your shoulder and out of the window, you see that the man is still outside and most certainly staring directly at you. His lips appear to be turned up faintly, a hint of an uninvited smile and you begin to feel a little chill creep under your coat.

By Will O Wisp Venice: you may think “been there done that”, but reading Michelle Novak’s Venice set during Carnevale besides being an excellent initiation to the city is also enriching for those who have already been there. Written from the fascinating point of view of “you”, you indeed zoom right into the city and get caught up in the action , even control it to a certain extent by making choices at the end of each chapter about where to go and what to do next. Inevitably you wind up combing Venice, mostly on foot sometimes by gondola. Sometimes you get lost -but as seasoned travelers know, that sharpens your attention , helps you get a better feel of the city and heightens your experience. In the course of the adventure you visit famous historic sites but also offbeat places, get invited to private homes, wander off track and discover other spots, run into interesting Venetians who give you guided tours and historical accounts, inside information, insight into local customs , stir your curiosity or even romantic attraction. As you enjoy the sensation of actually being in Venice and participating in the most beautiful Carnival in the world, eating, drinking, smelling and touching, you are having fun but also learning quite a bit about the history and culture of the city, also now and then stirred to reflect the author’s words of wisdom discreetly woven into the text. The book includes amazingly detailed and sensual descriptions of streets, squares, gardens, bridges, palaces, mansions, cathedrals, handicraft, local food, unique dishes, products, spices, restaurants, canals, costumes, masks.A great read, a must for Venice aficionados and anyone who plans to go there or enjoys adventure and traveling.

I loved reading the Choose Your Own Adventure Books as a kid, so I was excited to delve into this book. Venice was the perfect setting for this book, with its labyrinthian streets and a mystery around every corner. The compelling imagery pulled me into each adventure, and the suspenseful format made it hard for me to put the book down. Reading this book is actually much better than visiting Venice--far less expensive and no pesky pigeons :)

I love to travel and discover new places and this was an amazing experience for me to discover (or rediscover) an enchanting Venice. From the very first moment arriving in a vaporetto to the many excursions and adventures throughout the book. And I loved the choose your own path theme to it, which allowed me to explore and get lost in this wonderful city my own way! I wish to discover many other cities just like I did Venice!
