When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s life is threatened, FBI Director Hoover has no choice but to dispatch Agent Harry Bierce, the one man he can trust to stop an assassination. Problem is, Bierce is no ordinary agent. With no verifiable history, Hoover has no way to control him or his methods. Preferring to work alone and wanting no acknowledgement for his part in solving high-profile crimes, Bierce often single-handedly brings criminals to justice when other agents have failed. But when his search for the assassin leads him into a web of corruption, he comes up against local law enforcement who want to protect their reputations and federal agents who want revenge, no matter what the stakes.

About the Author
After receiving his Juris Doctorate from UCLA, Jack Martin worked for The Department of Defense and the aerospace industry, specializing in contracts and regulatory issues. Tracing his Californian ancestry back to the 1830s, Martin developed a passion for American history and the mystery genre. With encouragement and support from his beloved wife Sonia, he began writing. She passed away on Christmas Eve 2009 following a brave battle against ovarian cancer. He promised her he would finish the books and become a published author. He dedicated his first novel, John Brown’s Body to her, the love of his life.
Martin is the author of the Alphonso Clay Mystery Series set during the Civil War: John Brown’s Body, Battle Cry of Freedom, Marching Through Georgia, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Hail Columbia.

By Jeanie I have read every Jack Martin book and each one made me feel like I was witnessing history first-hand, like I was right there. Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? was not an exception. I got a glimpse of gangster life—Bonne and Clyde, Dillinger, J. Edgar Hoover, Early Long, Carl Weiss, Heinrich Himmler, Franz von Papen. If I had read books like his in high school, I would have gotten more out of history classes. The common thread throughout all his books is a blonde guy with small, round glasses…Gosh, I love that character. I cannot wait for more! For those not familiar with his other works, he has written: John Brown’s Body, Battle Cry of Freedom, Marching Through Georgia, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Hail Columbia. All are fabulous!— CJ Loiacono

Heroes and Villains of the Depression By Dennis P Jack Martin has managed to string together an assortment of outlaws, corrupt politicians, villains, and a few heroes—mostly real people of the Depression era--into a thoroughly entertaining page-turner of a novel. Think Bonnie and Clyde meets the Chicago Mob meets Huey Long meets Heinrich Himmler of Nazi Germany meets J. Edgar Hoover and his FBI. The ringmaster of this circus of characters is Martin’s fictional Harry Brice, an enigmatic FBI agent.Martin uses historical events and his own inventions in a story that is a thoroughly entertaining novel with a big serving of American Depression era history included as a bonus.

Graziano Mr Martin has again taken obscure elements of history, mixed them with well known characters and incidents and made it all come alive through his knowledge of the characters of the times and through his own imagination. The fictional elements blend seamlessly with the historical facts. Even when there is a stretch of imagination, it is done with respect for reality. Mr. Martin clearly has a love of history and a quick wit that allows him to inspire the reader with an enjoyment of an era in history that is often ignored these days. He uses the sensational criminals of the 1930's and the hidden corruption in superficially respectable agencies to create immovable obstructions to the task Bierce has been set: to find the assassin threatening President Roosevelt. The main character, Bierce, is quirky and a little scary. His often savage nature is his own worst enemy, but he usually keeps it under control. Even when it is not, somehow the reader sees a form of justice in his techniques for furthering his purposes. Once Bierce accepts the assignment from Herbert Hoover, he goes at it with intensity and singleness of purpose that would frighten the targeted criminals if they knew.Mr. Martin creates a tale of suspense, action, intrigue and a touch of humor to captivate the reader. I heartily recommend this book and it predecessors.
