These are times of turmoil. But times of turmoil can also be times of creativity as we become aware of new possibilities in our arts, sciences, and industries, and of new directions for our lives. Today’s challenges all have one thing in common: they call out for Visionary Creativity. We flourish in pursuit of our creativity, and it is in creativity that we find not only fulfillment for ourselves, but also the visions our world is calling for. In this profoundly engaging book you will enter the worlds of modern art, current movies and television dramas, new technologies, and cutting edge science. You will see familiar figures examined in surprising ways: musicians, including Mozart, Stravinsky, and the Beatles; artists, including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Warhol; writers, including Twain, Joyce, and Rowling; scientists, including Darwin, Einstein, and Wolfram; and business leaders, including Jobs, Zuckerberg, and Karp. Today’s Visionary Creatives inhabit an emerging world and are driven to produce work that will help all of us to see what they see as we move deeper into the twenty-first century. As Shelley wrote, “Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.”

Review Lobell shows us that a special kind of creativity, which he calls “Visionary Creativity,” not only brings us what is useful and beautiful but actually brings us into the future. - The Boston Globe … Lobell shows how Vincent van Gogh not only created beautiful paintings, but also ushered us into the electrified 20th century, and how Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook not only linked us to our friends, but is ushering us into a new kind of networked 21st century. – San Jose Mercury News Creativity: we all think we understand what it means. But what exactly is creativity? Of course it requires liberating our imaginations, thinking outside the box, and engaging the right side of our brains. But in today’s world, with the rate of change happening faster than ever the need has never been greater for the kinds of game-changing solutions that only the right kind of creativity can provide for us. That need exists in our personal lives, to help us achieve deeper fulfillment, in society, to help us find new solutions to our problems, and in business, to help us remain globally competitive. - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette What is that right kind of creativity, how might it different from ordinary creativity, and who can we look to for those breakthroughs? Punching Holes Through the Walls of Culture to Allow Transcendence to Come Pouring In By John David Ebert Visionary Creativity by John Lobell is a wonderful exploration of the "creative machine" as it were that has driven Western Civilization to produce its own string of geniuses (not that other civilizations don't; but Lobell is an expert when it comes to Western cultural history). I found this book to be a fascinating tour of the kinds of minds and geniuses that the West produces, and Lobell has a particular talent for bringing to life the main, overarching Idea that each genius produces ( "genius" for want of a more deconstructed term in the post-metaphysical age in which geniuses are no longer allowed). The reader goes on a visionary journey through the minds of Einstein, Gregor Mendel, Picasso, Stravinsky, Steve Jobs and others. Lobell is very good at going straight to the heart of the central Vision that animated the minds of each of these brilliant men and women (yes there are women here too). His book is packed full of mini biographies that tell exhilarating tales of Visions let loose into the physical world from the burning minds of the people who driven to incarnate them in their various respective media. The Visionary Creative is the one who moves civilization forward. These are the key players that enunciate and announce the Big Plan that generations of lesser minds will work out and work on for generations which follow. Einstein is a Visionary Creative because he inaugurated an entire paradigm shift that spread through the whole of physics like a wildfire. Same thing with Frank Lloyd Wright, say, or Louis I. Kahn. The book reminds me somewhat of Richard Tarnas's The Passion of the Western Mind, but I think it is a better book because it takes the reader in detail into the evolution of each thinker's ideas as they unfold. Whereas Tarnas was telling the story of the whole civilization, Lobell is trying to uncover for us the thinkers that are currently moving our civilization forward by punching walls through the culture to open holes into Transcendence.I highly recommend this most enjoyable book. It is Lobell's best work so far and I look forward to reading more from him.

Visionary Creatives: How These Geniuses Among Us are Changing the World By Judy Katz Every once in a while you come across a book that challenges what you think you know: your strong opinions, your personal experiences, and even your perception of yourself and the world around you. "Visionary Creativity: How New Worlds Are Born" by professor of architecture, shrewd cultural observer and sought-after public speaker John Lobell is just such a book. In this remarkable work Professor Lobell dissects key tenets of our culture, including breakthroughs from the worlds of art, literature, and science. In the process he shows us how we normally (and often mistakenly) view creativity and the creative process by presenting a new take on the contributions of our most celebrated geniuses. These range from Mozart to Picasso, along with the Beatles, Einstein, Zuckerberg and Jobs...and even to today’s reality stars. What we learn –in a way that turns what we thought we knew on its head—is the difference between mere creativity and the paradigm-changing “Visionary Creatives” who seem to be working from the future backwards!Underlying the structure and message of this revolutionary book is the author’s desire to acknowledge who we can look to now and into the future to help us find solutions to the many devastating problems of modern times--and how each of us may be able to turn ourselves into visionary Creatives. Someone very smart said, If you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem. I say, do not overlook this book!

Valentine As an architect, I have long admired John Lobell’s book on Louis Kahn, “Between Silence and Light.” It sits on a shelf next to my desk. Architecture must fulfill the needs described in a program, but it must also help us understand and absorb the meanings of these functions. Kahn’s ability to do this is part of why he is admired by architects. But the importance of understanding the deeper meanings of things goes beyond architecture to all of creativity. Lobell’s new book beautifully conveys this importance, and I have new added it to my shelf.
