Redneck Opera chronicles a mostly true tale about the early days of oil discovery when dirt-poor cotton farmers became overnight millionaires as they drilled for water and hit oil. Outsiders swarmed in to prey upon the unsuspecting locals. Junior Peck was one such outsider and the story follows Junior from his less than ideal childhood in Enid, Oklahoma to his ill-gotten wealthy lifestyle in Texas.

Redneck Opera, by Margaret Mooney

Review From Foreword Reviews, Oct. 15, 2015 Reviewed by Tracy Fischer Oil money meets redneck in a Texan tall tale that's engaging and funny. A remarkable time period and cast of characters come together in Redneck Opera, by Margaret Mooney. The oil underneath the red clay earth of Texas snakes through the lives of the characters in this fun and funny novel, and when oil money meets redneck, that's when the true drama begins...Written in a lighthearted and engaging style, this mainstream work of historical fiction whips through a wild tale like a Texas windstorm. The descriptive language absolutely shines, evoking Texas as clearly as the bluebell. From those who have "more hat than cows," to the gym walls that "heaved in and out like a giant lung" it's easy to conceptualize exactly what the author intends to convey. The work is captivating and humorous. It imparts enough bits of historical authenticity to ground the story in reality, but not so many facts that the effervescent feel of the work is bogged down. The story moves quickly, is complete, and definitely satisfies, especially for those who love a sense of redemption for those wronged. A truly Texan tall tale, Redneck Opera will appeal to a wide and varied audience. From those who love historical fiction to those who love a plainly great work of fiction that will have them laughing throughout, Mooney's newest work will surely gain her a bevy of loyal followers.

From the Author The idea of Junior came from our across-the-street neighbor in the mid 1960's when I was in high school.  He was a wildcatter named Alfred.  We called him "Honest Al the Investor's Pal". He would take my daddy on road trips to Zoilly, Louisiana to look for places to drill for oil.  To this day, people I know from Louisiana don't know where Zoilly is.  I know there's no oil there. --Margaret MooneyPrologue...A single event a century ago marked the beginning of a dramatic new era in the Lone Star State.  In October of 1900, Captain Anthony Lucas, an Austrian-born mining Engineer, joined with two wildcatter oilmen, James Guffey and John Galey in Beaumont, Texas, on Spindletop Hill to drill for oil. The drill bit lodged in a crevice at 1,006 feet around Christmas.    What happened next was to be the best Christmas present ever for these men, the State of Texas and the economic fabric of the world.   As the men worked to free the drill, an enormous gusher of oil blew into the sky. Thus began the story and legend of Texas oil.  Dirt poor cotton farmers were simply drilling water wells and suddenly up came a gusher of oil...

From the Back Cover The discovery of oil in East Texas in the 1930s and 1940s transformed sleepy farm towns into hotbeds of greed and corruption. Redneck Opera tells the story of one such town, Bullard, where Junior Peck arrives fresh from a difficult childhood in Enid, Oklahoma. Here to seek his fortune and respect, Junior, like other outsiders, preys upon unsuspecting locals, swindling everyone from dirt-poor cotton farmers to his wife Priss. His wildcatter escapades, social events at the local country club, stolen oil wells, and fake investment schemes all portray the sordid realities that ushered in the petroleum age."Margaret Mooney's debut novel, Redneck Opera, is one flat-out hilarious romp. It's clever and reckless and is written with brio and grace."  --John Dufresne, author of No Regrets, Coyote

A hoot and a holler, Texas style By MsBeach This book is a hoot and a holler, Texas style, written with humor, satire and a good deal of knowledge of the people and history of east Texas. Not to mention the language and accent---and those names! When regular folk suddenly come into big oil money, the shenanigans begin...and they don't end. There are good people, evil people, suckers, victims, lucky ducks, and slick operators all out-foxing each other in a well-told tale. This book is just good fun to read.

Characters were rather shallow and underdeveloped but the story was engaging though not very sympathetic. There was a sense of adventure without conscience but didn't show the full affect on the community.
