About the Author
Windell Oskay is the co-founder of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories, a Silicon Valley company that has designed and produced specialized electronics and robotics kits since 2007. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories also runs a popular DIY project blog, and many of its projects have been featured at science and art museums and in Make, Wired, and Popular Science magazines. Windell was also a founding board member of OSHWA, the Open Source Hardware Association. Previously, Windell has worked as a hardware design engineer at Stanford Research Systems and as a research physicist in the Time and Frequency Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He holds a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Lake Forest College and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Nice Addition to a Science Library, but Not My First Choice By Amazon Customer This is a new edition of a 1960s book of science experiments (ostensibly for children, but really for anyone who is not a professional scientist). The new co-author has modified and extended the original work to up date safety guidance, sources for materials, etc. The beginning of the book laments the overly cautious posture assumed by contemporary society (especially in education), reinforcing the counter-argument made in books such as "The Dangerous Book for Boys" by Conn Iggulden and Hal Iggulden and "50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do)" by Gever Tulley, Julie Spiegler (among many others).Despite the new co-author's good intentions (with which I agree), this is probably not the best hands-on science book for someone wanting to get beyond today's velvet rope boundaries of caution. Though worthwhile, I feel that this work is held back by the original edition. Other recently-published titles would probably serve better, if one were limited to the purchase of a single book. Titles I'd suggest instead would include the series (also published by Maker Media) by Robert Bruce Thompson and Barbara Fricthman Thompson, "Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments: All Lab, No Lecture (DIY Science)" and its counterparts for Biology and Forensic Science.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Old-school in the best way By Michigoon Wow, get this for your kid.REAL SCIENCE! Too many new science books for kids come with a limited selection of completely pre-fabricated bits, with all the "experiments" 100% planned so there's no real experimentation. This is completely different, the book gives kids a short list of things they need like "milk carton, 4 paper cups..." so kids are encouraged to explore, and try things for themselves, and there's lots of notes on alternate materials you can try- kids are encouraged to experiment and compare the results. Wonderful!All levels of challenge. Most experiments are given in a fairly simple form, then followed by a series of challenge questions or ways to improve the apparatus. An example is the "nephoscope", essentially you take a mirror and mark the compass directions on it. You place this mirror flat on the ground, and use it to see gauge the direction and speed of clouds moving overhead. One challenge question involves the fact that weather reports don't say what direction the wind is moving *toward* but what direction the wind is moving *from*, and challenges the experimenter to reverse the directions on their nephoscope. Questions like these provide a wonderful way to get kids to think critically- for example *why* do weather reports use the direction the wind is from? Good science books should encourage kids to formulate such questions for themselves.REAL DANGER! Science geeks complain constantly about how sanitized modern science kits are. For example, you can no longer purchase an off-the-shelf chemistry kit with strong acids, which limits children from performing many interesting experiments. It's a bit like trying to protect your kid from ever being burned, by getting rid of your oven- there are better ways. There is no such problem in this book. For one of course you're challenged to get your own materials, so the author can list any materials at all- even when they involve high voltage! Yes, this is a science book that includes serious warnings of chemical burns, electrocutions, and lacerations. I'm sure there's a "helicopter parents" somewhere who's hyperventilating at these warnings, but for anyone who cares about real experimental science, this is a blessing. Each experiment is carefully crafted to allow kids the maximum exposure to concepts with minimal risk- but risk is not left out of the book merely for legal reasons. Safety is in the hands of the experimenter (and hopefully an adult who's there to lend support without too much hand-holding).Age range? Nah. This book does not come stamped all over with an age range- nor should it. When I was a budding scientist kid, I was doing a lot of similar experiments in gradeschool. Other kids might not get into this until their teens. The appropriate age range for this book begins when a child is old enough to ask questions (with the help of a guardian of course), and ends when they've gotten too crabby to experience any more wonder. I'd say "5 to 105" is a good range. Parents can benefit too- I know a lot of adults who can't manage to build half the things in this book, when a lot of interested children will breeze right through. This is something parent and child can enjoy together.All in all, this is a wonderful book. If you love your child / nieces and nephews / grandchildren / child you mentor, get it for them today. Then open up your junk bins so they can find some old parts, and maybe even dig out that old radio so you can play with the transistors. Generations of America's best scientists and Nobel prizewinners grew up this way, and your kids should too.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Help your kids with this. By Big Daddy This is a great book to have to inspire a desire to learn. The problem is, kids today are so focused on instant gratification and instant results. Taking the time to build something from scratch takes a great deal of patience. This book can be a great tool for teaching patience, but I think it is the rare kid that will be self-motivated enough to handle this book on his/her own.If I had to complain about anything in the book, it is that some of the safety procedures are in an appendix area at the back of the book. You really should read the appendices before attempting any of the experiments. That was not initially obvious to me.
