0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. sustained effort is required to create a school with a good, solid education strategy By Nicole Roe Alyce B. DePree, retired independent school English teacher and cousin of former Canterbury Board Chair, David DePree writes this review:The History of Canterbury School (Fort Myers, Florida; 1964-2014)Culled from interviews of local citizens, teachers, students, parents, and board members, and supported by detailed notes from committee meetings and planning sessions, The (fifty-year) History of Canterbury School by historian Marnie Paulus not only gives a meticulous account of the development of this private school but, in doing so, traces fifty years of the fluctuations in American education as well. Currently in this nation we anguish over the frustrations of dubious Head Start efficacy now challenged by Core Curriculum design. Previously we have struggled over--but only occasionally through--public versus charter support, industrial versus classical instruction, and religion/social versus secular content. The strength of Paulus' approach and, hence, the History itself, is that with minimal but well-researched introductions and summations she has enlisted the candor and vitality of those who have been involved in Canterbury School from its inception to the present. What emerges illustrates how strongly socioeconomic and political situations impact American education, and how much heroic, sustained effort is required to create a school with a good, solid education strategy...one that can instill its loyal students with the desire to learn, develop, and serve.
