4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Read! By AnnE. The author has taken the story of Hagar from the Bible and has written a Biblical fiction story that I very much enjoyed.; I was pulled into Faru's story from the first pages and the author has done a wonderful job of telling her story as she learns to put her faith in God. This is the first I have read by this author but I definitely look forward to reading more by her. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, and it is one that I definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys good Biblical fiction.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Winner For this Author By Sandra K. Stiles I received a copy to facilitate my review.Kandi Wyatt has taken historical fiction and elevated it to a higher level. Her world building pulls you in and puts you right in the middle of the adventure. This is why I love her books. I immediately recogized the story line in her newest book. It is the story of Hagar and her son Ishmael. However, she has taken the information from the Bible and told Hagars story from her perspective. She also removed it from the Biblical time period and set it in medieval times. For me this works so well. We find Faru (Hagar) traded from her mistress to a young Lord. When his wife is finally returned to him, they keep her. Things go along well for years with Faru attending to Lady Cwen's needs. She even finds herself falling in love with a young man named Cailean. But all of this is to change because The Existing One has told him he will have a son.I will say nothing further because to do so will spoil such a wonderful story. However, if you are familiar with the story you know what will happen. The story is full of hope, love, betrayal and the hardship of living the life of a servant in medieval times. It is also full of hope and trust in "The Existing One". As a Christian it is a reminder to all who follow him that we must always place our trust in God and understand that even through hardships he knows what is best for us. I will definitely recommend this book to others and because it is such a clean read and one that will appeal to teens and adult, will proudly put a copy on my shelves at school. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.

The world and characters are believable and relatable. But there’s more to this story then plot, world, and characters: it’s a story about God, and His dealings with people. And, for that reason, I am certain it will be on my mind for a long time to come.I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.Full review: https://lydiathomasauthor.wordpress.com/2015/10/24/all-this-time-and-the-one-who-sees-me/

Many of our young students come to school with vast experience in the digital world but too often use digital tools in limited ways because they view technology as merely another form of entertainment. Educators William L. Bass II and Franki Sibberson believe that teachers can help students recognize their expertise in out-of-school digital reading and extend it into the world of school. For this to happen, we need to redefine reading to include digital reading and texts, learn how to support digital reading in the classroom, and embed digital tools throughout the elementary and middle school curriculum. Bass, a technology coordinator, and Sibberson, a third-grade teacher, invite us to consider what is essential in integrating technology into the classroom, focusing especially on authenticity, intentionality, and connectedness. They explore the experiences readers must have in order to navigate the digital texts they will encounter, as well as the kinds of lessons we must develop to enhance those experiences. Always advocating for sound literacy practice and drawing on the NCTE Policy Research Brief Reading Instruction for All Students, they lead from experience--both theirs and that of other classroom teachers, grades 3-8.

Every PBIS team needs a copy of this text." A groundbreaking manifesto about what our nation’s top schools should be—but aren’t—providing: “The ex-Yale professor effectively skewers elite colleges, their brainy but soulless students (those ‘sheep’), pushy parents, and admissions mayhem” (People). As a professor at Yale, William Deresiewicz saw something that troubled him deeply. His students, some of the nation’s brightest minds, were adrift when it came to the big questions: how to think critically and creatively and how to find a sense of purpose. Now he argues that elite colleges are turning out conformists without a compass. Excellent Sheep takes a sharp look at the high-pressure conveyor belt that begins with parents and counselors who demand perfect grades and culminates in the skewed applications Deresiewicz saw firsthand as a member of Yale’s admissions committee. As schools shift focus from the humanities to “practical” subjects like economics, students are losing the ability to think independently. It is essential, says Deresiewicz, that college be a time for self-discovery, when students can establish their own values and measures of success in order to forge their own paths. He features quotes from real students and graduates he has corresponded with over the years, candidly exposing where the system is broken and offering clear solutions on how to fix it. “Excellent Sheep is likely to make…a lasting mark….He takes aim at just about the entirety of upper-middle-class life in America….Mr. Deresiewicz’s book is packed full of what he wants more of in American life: passionate weirdness” (The New York Times).

Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life, by William Deresiewicz

From Booklist *Starred Review* It might surprise the countless students competing for admission to Harvard, Yale, and Stanford that they could be fighting for a dubious prize. But in this probing indictment, a former Yale professor accuses America’s top universities of turning young people into tunnel-visioned careerists, adept at padding their résumés and filling their bank accounts but unprepared to confront life’s most important questions. Craven conformity, not free-spirited independence, is what Deresiewicz sees students learning in a campus world populated by hyperspecialized professors who pursue arcane research agendas and leave the teaching of undergraduates to adjuncts and TAs. The time has come, Deresiewicz asserts, for college professors and administrators to make students their first priority by giving them a challenging liberal-arts education. Grounded in the humanities, such an education would give students real intellectual and imaginative breadth, not just a professional credential. Besides pressing for this curricular and pedagogical realignment, Deresiewicz calls for radical reform of admissions policies, so reversing the trends that make the university an enforcer of caste hierarchies. Deresiewicz’s controversial full agenda indeed means an end to rule by meritocracy and a beginning of fairness for the working class. An urgent summons to a long-overdue debate over what universities do and how they do it. --Bryce Christensen

Review “In Excellent Sheep, William Deresiewicz sets out to unnerve the current and future college students of America (and their parents). He succeeds brilliantly, with an indictment of elite education that should launch a thousand conversations. Read this book to remember what learning should be, and then pass it along to the next sheep who should leave the flock behind.” (Emily Bazelon, author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy)“This is a book of great importance to our society. It deserves to transform our understanding of integrity and achievement and success. William Deresiewicz is a genuine humanist with a profound faith in the promise of democracy, and he has an uncommon gift for wisdom without platitudes. Excellent Sheep is a withering analysis of the transactional spirit that rules American education and American life, and an inspiring example of a better ideal. A true teacher speaks here. He has my admiration and my gratitude.” (Leon Wieseltier)“William Deresiewicz’s book is in and of itself a higher education, and to read it is to learn what’s a college for. The author is an inspired teacher, and his lesson is of a truth sorely needing to be told.” (Lewis Lapham)“William Deresiewicz’s Excellent Sheep is a searing and important critique of our morally bankrupt educational system. He argues, correctly, that colleges and universities, awash in corporate money and intend on churning out corporate managers and conformists rather than scholars, have betrayed not only their mission, but the students they purport to teach and by extension the wider society. Independent thought is subversive, uncomfortable and lonely. It requires us, as Deresiewicz points out, to challenge and question reigning assumptions rather than kneel before them. Deresiewicz’s book is not so much a call for reform as for revolt.” (Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, with Joe Sacco, of Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt)"William Deresiewicz is one of America's best young public intellectuals. He has written a passionate, deeply informed, and searing critique of the way we are educating our young. Whether you agree or disagree - and I found myself doing both - you must read this book. It should spark a great debate on America's campuses and beyond." (Fareed Zakaria, author of The Post-American World)“Excellent Sheep is likely to make…a lasting mark…for three reasons. One, Mr. Deresiewicz spent 24 years in the Ivy League, graduating from Columbia and teaching for a decade at Yale….He brings the gory details. Two, the author is a striker, to put it in soccer terms. He’s a vivid writer, a literary critic whose headers tend to land in the back corner of the net. Three, his indictment arrives on wheels: He takes aim at just about the entirety of upper-middle-class life in America…. Mr. Deresiewicz’s book is packed full of what he wants more of in American life: passionate weirdness.” (Dwight Garner The New York Times)"It might surprise the countless students competing for admission to Harvard, Yale, and Stanford that they could be fighting for a dubious prize. But in this probing indictment, a former Yale professor accuses America’s top universities of turning young people into tunnel-visioned careerists, adept at padding their résumés and filling their bank accounts but unprepared to confront life’s most important questions. . . . An urgent summons to a long-overdue debate over what universities do and how they do it." (Bryce Christensen Booklist (starred review)) “Welcome to what is sure to be the most polarizing education and parenting book since Amy Chua’s Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom.” (Town & Country) “This refreshingly barbed indictment of America’s prestige-education addiction reveals what college students are really getting out of all that work, all that struggle, all that stress – and all those tuition loans.” (MORE Magazine)"Excellent Sheep challenges parents to break from the herd mentality, to question what we really want from our children, who we really want them to be. The book filled me with both hope that there could be a more authentic, creative way to raise a new generation of thinkers--and with the courage to try to find it." (Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter)“Deresiewicz’s critique of America’s most celebrated schools as temples of mercenary mediocrity is lucid, sharp-edged, and searching … he poses vital questions about what college teaches—and why.” (Publishers Weekly)“An unquestionably provocative book that hopefully leads to productive debate.” (Kirkus)"Not only does Deresiewicz speak with candor about the ins and outs of the educational hierarchy from an insiders point of view, but he prompts some serious questions about the potential for reform and what we as parents can do to encourage our children from a young age to change the way that they’re learning, and as a result, what they take from the world in exchange. A much recommended read, especially for those currently with or planning to have children." (Briana Burns High Voltage)“[A] good case that these colleges are failing in their most essential mission: to help kids "build a self." (Mother Jones)“Provocative.” (The Daily Beast)“Anyone who cares about American higher education should ponder this book.” (The New York Times Book Review)"Exceptionally enlightening." (Bowling Green Daily News)

Sewell This book piqued my interest because my son just graduated high school and is entering college. His classmates range from the "Super People" (author William Deresiewicz's phrase for the highest achievers) who are on their way to elite universities, to the more typical students who are starting their higher educations at community colleges. In each book review I try to include a few well-written sentences that concisely illustrate an author's point of view. This book is so well written that I could have chosen just about every sentence. Here are some of the best:=====The compulsive overachievement of today's elite college students-- the sense that they need to keep running as fast as they can-- is not the only thing that keeps them from forming the deeper relationships that might relieve their anguish.Isolated from their peers, these kids are also cut off from themselves. The endless hoop-jumping... that got them into an elite college in the first place--the clubs, bands, projects, teams, APs, SATs, evenings, weekends, summers, coaches , tutors, leadership, service -- left them no time to figure out what they want out of life.Too many students, perhaps after a year or two spent using college as a treadmill to nowhere, wake up in crisis, not knowing why they have worked so hard."I hate all my activities, I hate all my classes, I hated everything I did in high school, expect to hate my job, and this is just how it's going to be for the rest of my life."The result is what we might refer to as credentialism. The purpose of life becomes the accumulation of gold stars. Hence the relentless extracurricular busyness, the neglect of learning as an end in itself, the inability to imagine doing something that you can't put on your resume...the constant sense of competition....to be played out within the same narrow conception of what constitutes a valid life: affluence, credentials, and prestige. If those of us who went to college in the 1970s and '80s no longer recognize the admissions process, if today's elite students appear to be an alien species --Super People, perhaps, or a race of bionic hamsters=====That's a pretty dreadful assessment, but Deresiewicz is a former Professor of English at Yale and member of its admissions committee, so he must have seen plenty of it first-hand.He is surely right about those of us who went to college in the 1970s no longer recognizing the admissions process. I graduated Georgia Tech in 1979. He praises students of our era as "passionate weirdos." That certainly fit my class, although I'd prefer to call us "competent eccentrics." We were engineering nerds. I was recruited because my ACT/SAT put me in the top 2%. I had zero extracurricular activities.Fast forward 40 years and it seems that colleges cater to "credentialed conformists." Applicants have to show that they are not only academic stars, but social butterflies involved in numerous group activities. Even the "party schools" require students to write an essay explaining why they want to be admitted. The only requirement to be admitted to the party schools of the 1970s was that you had to have tuition money and a pulse. What caused this change from universities prizing "passionate weirdos" to "credentialed conformists?" Perhaps it has to do with these factors:1. We have become more litigation-conscious. Companies can't afford to hire "loose cannons" who create potential legal liabilities. Nowadays people are easily offended by many words and deeds that were ignored in the past, and they are quick to hire lawyers who will seek to recover damages on their behalf. So companies value conformists who follow the book more than they used to.2. Flattening of management. A company that had 20 branch managers 40 years ago, now has only 1 regional manager, thanks to advances in computers and Internet communication. So, if 95% of the management jobs are gone, then companies have to find discrimination-neutral ways to winnow down the pool of candidates applying for that one job. Inflating the job requirements with credentials, no matter how bogus, is one way to do it without running the risk of discrimination lawsuits.3. Maturing of industries. A century or so ago people were allowed to practice Law even if they had no formal education. It used to be that way in fields like auto repair and computer systems development. Now that these industries have matured and there is no longer a shortage of applicants, credentialization is the most efficient way to cull the herd. The important question is whether all this credentialing and hoop-jumping is counterproductive to success in college and in life. I don't think it necessarily is. Corporations operate on these principles. So it is not unreasonable that colleges should give the highest priority in admissions to those who are likely to perform well in corporate employment.Credentialing and hoop-jumping only becomes counterproductive when it is forced upon people whose natures are NOT motivated by peer-group competition. This may include most nonconformist, creative-minded people who prefer to blaze their own trail through life rather than walk on someone else's.And we must remember that credentials are not the primary currency of success. Most of the worthwhile things we obtain in life come from our souls. We prosper mostly from the goodwill we create by doing things for others without thinking "how am I going to get paid."Layering credentials on top of that principle strengthens your credibility and amplifies your reach. But if you have a defective character then credentials will only lengthen the height from which you fall. A lot of hotshots on Wall Street who were long on credentials and short on integrity are costing their companies tens of billions of dollars in fines for defrauding the public. Those who exchanged their souls for tickets to a rat race will die neither wealthy or respected.I recommend that students and parents should read this book as an "alarm bell" to warn themselves when they may be pushing the hoops-and-credentials envelope a bit too far. William Deresiewicz makes fundamental points that are too often perceived only at the end of life's journey:Keep your priorities straight. Perfect your own soul first, then jump through the hoops if you feel you have to. But, really, your objective should be to induce life to jump through the hoops YOU build. Never be afraid to take the risks that success requires. Never be afraid of failure. And always do what is right. If your soul is deep and rich, your life will be deep and rich. But if you seek to cover a shallow soul with credentials, then your life won't be worth the paper those credentials are printed on.

Correct Diagnosis -- Incorrect Prescription By Zachary Slayback When I saw William Deresiewicz's New Republic piece, "Don't Send Your Kids to the Ivy League," I jumped at the opportunity to read it. As a partial Ivy League apostate myself, the thought of somebody -- a former Ivy League professor at that! -- calling out the cultural problems within these institutions excited me. The piece made waves, with students and professors alike responding, and getting people excited for Deresiewicz's book, Excellent Sheep. It worked. I bought his book and worked my way through it, hoping for an intricate analysis of a serious cultural issue and a nuanced solution. While at an Ivy League university -- the University of Pennsylvania, in my case -- I see many of the issues that Deresiewicz identifies in his New Republic piece and in interviews on the book. Students who came to school wanting to change the world and make it their own place, to be in the driver's seat of their lives, quickly fell into an assembly-line-like mold. They may have entered school wanting to start a business and offer a new service, or to write a book, or to become a professional speaker, but by their second or third years, many had their eyes set on the crown jewels of the Ivy League experience -- On Campus Recruiting (OCR). They designed their resumes and schedules around exactly what recruiters from Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley would want and slowly extirpated the things they had passions for coming in to school. They became barely identifiable with their starry-eyed freshman selves. It wasn't infuriating as much as it was sad. The problem is not necessarily that students want to go work on Wall Street after their time at school -- if that is truly your dream and what you believe will make you come alive, then by all means, please go pursue that! The problem is something at these schools is driving young people to settle and choose careers they don't find fulfilling. I was hoping Deresiewicz would identify what that something is. In short, I was disappointed. Deresiewicz correctly diagnoses the disease that is this cultural issue, but his diagnosis is shallow, lacks detail (he relies almost entirely on anecdote and quoting English literature), and misses the deeper issue of pre-college schooling almost altogether. Even worse, his prescription for the problem -- accessible liberal arts education at schools like public honors colleges (outlined in Part III of the book) -- stems from his romanticized view of the academy, an unrealistic view of how public honors colleges operate, and an economically illiterate view of admissions reform (please see Steven Pinker's review, "The Trouble with Harvard." Pinker points out that the issues that students face at elite schools -- anxiety, depression, unfulfilled potential -- are suffered at higher rates by students at public universities, and that Deresiewicz's admissions reform recommendations would fail to address the perverse meritocracy he attacks, among other things). Excellent Sheep has sections that are worth reading, and can be an enjoyable book at times, but the reasoning and argumentation behind it is flimsy and frustrating. Once one digs through the literary fluff that makes up a good half of the book, one walks away dissatisfied. If a reader is interested in something on each of Deresiewicz's main goals -- the unfulfilled lives of young people, finding one's passions, and higher education reform -- there are better books out there. Consider Peter Gray's Free to Learn, Roman Krznaric's How to Find Fulfilling Work, and Bryan Caplan's forthcoming The Case Against Education.

The question was simply: "What's your major?" His answer: "Pre-Wealth."William Deresiewicz passionately believes that a true education should be something else: a habit of questioning, a constant search to understand the universe, the world, the society we live in and with that understanding to work for justice. He's asking for moral imagination, and he's shocked at its lack in universities that are stifled by the money they cost, the donations they chase, and the student debt that sends students into "practical" (lucrative but spirit-deadening) careers. In truth, of course, elite universities are not entirely devoid of the values he champions, nor would he claim that. Some elite schools such as the Phillips Exeter Academy teach by the Socratic method; Oxford tutorials are meant to reward originality (though too often they and the Oxford Finals system reward mere fluency). But that doesn't at all detract from the validity of Deresiewicz's case, especially since it is written as advice to students. The larger failure, I think, is a failure of the universities to foster an understanding of 21st century reality as a never-ending, uncertain, open philosophical inquiry. There are those, inside and outside, elite education engaged in that, from the Resilience Alliance to Stuart Kauffman to Frans de Waal to a superb journalist such as Elizabeth Kolbert, but it ought to be the heart and mind of a liberal education. For that to happen, universities will not only have to drop money-obsessed "practicality"; they'll also have to tear down some of the disciplinary walls assiduously maintained by doctoral and professorial guilds. It can't happen too soon.

By Amazon Customer Positively Smarter Science and Strategies for Increasing Happiness, Achievement, and Well-Being is a hands-on, user friendly guide that allows one to learn about and/or continue to develop knowledge between the connection of brain-based learning, proper nutrition, and appropriate amounts of exercise with happy and successful students and adults. Prior information was included along with new findings in research of the brain-based learning field. The connection between the stages of happiness, achievement, and wellness appealed to me as a middle-school teacher. Metagcognitve strategies are now supplemented with thoughts on "practical metacognition." As an educator, the skills in this book are vital to my students. One of my favorite parts of the book was the series of checklists that I as the reader could use on myself to see which areas I need to improve or already excel in as both teacher and student. I highly recommend this book whether your are a novice to brain-based learning, or already have studied and applied yourself in the field.

Chock full of helpful tips to get you on the right path By atmj The first two chapters of this book discuss why this process works, all the scientific facts and figures, brain plasticity etc. At first this worried me that this book was only going to be that. However I was pleasantly surprised when I got Chapter 3, this is where the meat of the book begins and from this point on, each chapter has concrete information for getting your head in better shape.I like the science-based approach. This is no soft science, but stuff that works and has been measured. Some of it might be familiar. However there is a reason for that. Much of it is common sense. Clearly there is work to do for the person using this approach, but it is measured and achievable. I also don’t think this is a book you read and set down. I know I will have to pick it up and read various sections again. There really is a lot here.I like that exercise & nutrition is brought into this discussion. Let’s face it, we are living beings and our bodies support our brains and when it works better, so do our brains.Chapters are:****Introduction****1. Building a Smarter Brain****2. Why Happiness Matters****3. Stop Daydreaming and Start Thinking Your Way to Higher Levels of Happiness****4. Working Toward Achieving your Goals****5. Working Smarter with Practical Metacognition****6. Better Together****7. Building a Smarter Body-Brain System through Exercise****8. Fuel Your Body-Brain System for Peak Performance****9. Bringing it All Together, Putting it into Practice.****Appendix: Positively Smarter Action AssessmentEach section from Chapter 3 to 8 on has a checklist of desirable behaviors that are described in detail in that chapter. At the end it is all wrapped up and the Appendix has all the same checklists.I can't speak to the question of does this work for me as yet, as I haven't have time to put anything in place. However from my perspective this is very doable and I plan to start. I'll update on how this works out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You can become smarter even if you are already forty years young . . . the brain is always eager to learn. By Philip Henderson Great little book to help older people to change how they live to improve the quality of their life mentally, physically, and spiritually. This is a terrific book because it breaks down the illusion that you cannot get smarter or stronger as you age. In addition, it breaks down the myth of the IQ test. Many Americans believe the results of the IQ test are permanent, that if you get a low score as a child you will not become smart as an adult. Scientists know the IQ test is culturally biased. It does not give an accurate measure of a person's ability to learn. Imagine if you will that your blood pressure was taken only once or twice in your life and your vascular health for rest of your life was based on those two readings. The IQ test is similarly flawed. Unfortunately, teachers and students believe the results are accurate and unchanging . . . this leads to terrible results. In most cases those who receive high marks are labeled as smart and they mostly live up to the label. Unfortunately, those who do not receive a high score are labeled not so smart so that teachers do not give enough attention to those students and they permanently lag behind. Later in life when asked about their mediocre performance they shrug their shoulders and point to their low IQ score as a child as the explanation. Bull. Thank you professors Conyers and Wilson

A hugely successful businessman and entrepreneur, American candy magnate Milton Hershey and his wife Catherine were unable to have children of their own, so the couple set up a trust in 1909 and created the Hershey Industrial School for fatherless, healthy, Caucasian boys. Ever since its creation, the huge legal trust has poured profits from the candy business into this charitable venture, and is legally stipulated to do so in perpetuity. Since the inception of what is now known as the Milton Hershey School, the institution has become the nation s richest residential facility for impoverished youth and the richest private school. As Bob Fernandez reveals in THE CHOCOLATE TRUST: Deception, Indenture and Secrets at the $12 Billion Milton Hershey School, the school was established to help poor children in need. In fact, Milton Hershey forced widows to sign indentures, or contracts, for their boys so that they could benefit from his charity. The boys themselves lived and worked on the dozens of dairy farms integrated into Hershey s milk chocolate empire. The author also divulges that through the years, the school has been laden with scandal, racism and sexual misconduct, and plagued with a myriad of political and financial conflicts. Throughout this thoroughly researched work, Fernandez poses serious questions about the quality of care offered over the last century by this multi-billion-dollar institution. The author also discloses how monies generated by Hershey s assets have created temptations for those overseeing the Trust, including when Trust and state officials diverted tens of millions of dollars earmarked for the students welfare into a medical center for Pennsylvania State University, claiming there were not enough orphans in America to help. THE CHOCOLATE TRUST also reveals that, for years, no national experts on at-risk children, residential education, childhood education, child psychology or poverty were appointed to the Trust s board. A number of chapters in the book explore the unfortunate circumstances and scandals that have taken place throughout the school s history with response to admitting children of color, rejecting a student with HIV for admission, as well as various tragedies that occurred involving students due to the school s policies. In an ironic twist, the book s last chapter examines the role of charity-controlled Hershey Chocolate in sourcing its cocoa from African farms that utilize forced child labor. THE CHOCOLATE TRUST is full of hard-hitting stories. But the saddest truth of all is that it also sheds light on the corruption, and the complicity of the government and court officials in that corruption, within one of the world s richest philanthropies. The Milton Hershey School claims to spend $100,000 a year on each pupil. In reality, it is a revolving door of poor kids controlled by a politicized and underachieving board whose members personally benefit from the positions they hold.

The Chocolate Trust: Deception, Indenture and Secrets at the $12 Billion Milton Hershey School, by Bob Fernandez

Review It s hard to read.

But if you care about the future of the Milton Hershey School and our community it s worth the work to read. At its core, the School is Milton Hershey s estate, which, at its core, is one amazingly, enormously, gigantic pile of money. And since Milton Hershey is dead and left no children, that pile of money has no owner. There s no family to protect it. There are no partners to watch it. There are no stockholders to govern it. The Dauphin County Orphan s Court, in theory, oversees it, but the court system is remarkably ill-equipped to do that job. It can only respond to the relatively narrow issues brought before it by the relatively small number of people who have legal standing to do that.

So what do we do? What can we do to protect the pile from predators? We can start by reading the stories that are hard to read." --The Sun on the web[The Chocolate Trust] is important...for what it reveals about Hershey, its sometimes dubious practices and those who have suffered from its operation. [The book] ought to be required reading for anyone who thinks that the nonprofit sector can rely on self-regulation or the...practices of local and state government authorities. --The Chronicle of PhilanthropyThe Chocolate Trust is a searching examination of how this mix of charity and business success has fared. ... It s an impassioned plea for the complete overhaul of [the Hershey] school and trust. ... Philadelphians who have followed the legal sagas of the Barnes Foundation and Girard college, each with its own thorny trust issues, might shake their heads in wonder --The Philadelphia Inquirer

From the Inside Flap A hugely successful businessman and entrepreneur, American candy magnate Milton Hershey and his wife Catherine were unable to have children of their own, so the couple set up a trust in 1909 and created the Hershey Industrial School for fatherless, healthy, Caucasian boys. Ever since its creation, the huge legal trust has poured profits from the candy business into this charitable venture, and is legally stipulated to do so in perpetuity. Since the inception of what is now known as the Milton Hershey School, the institution has become the nation's richest residential facility for impoverished youth and the richest private school.

The boys themselves lived and worked on the dozens of dairy farms integrated into Hershey's milk chocolate empire.

The author also discloses how monies generated by Hershey's assets have created temptations for those overseeing the Trust, including when Trust and state officials diverted tens of millions of dollars earmarked for the students' welfare into a medical center for Pennsylvania State University, claiming there weren't enough orphans in America to help.

THE CHOCOLATE TRUST also reveals that, for years, no national experts on at-risk children, residential education, childhood education, child psychology or poverty were appointed to the Trust's board. A number of chapt

By livelywoman I read The Chocolate Trust and was saddened to see this journalist's extremely one-sided version of the Milton Hershey School. This book completely fails to inform the reader of the amazing accomplishments of the school. Buyer beware - this is not worth the money and will leave you misinformed and ill advised.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Nope! By Jay Cee I went to the school and while it has its flaws as it is run by humans...the school provides many with opportunities that they otherwise would not have. This book is irresponsible, the view is bias and the wording inflammatory, which can lead to someone in a bad situation not even considering this school as an option. If you want to know about the school go visit don't base your opinion solely on what you read in this book. Does the school have its flaws? Yes! Has it made mistakes? Yes! But at the end of the day the good it has done out weight the bad and the mistakes that have happened. There is always room for improvement.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wow! A thriller that I couldn't put down! By Jennie It was kinda hard finding this book because it is out of print but I purchased it and read it; it was definitely well worth the price and the wait. I loved the first two books in the series and I couldn't wait to find out what happens to Helena and Tancred next. Helena Lysander was on her way to her castle of Hohms where Tancred had believed she would be safe with his adoptive father and her mother. But Helena's bodyguard, Bardas, brought news to Tancred that her entourage was overtaken by her enemy Constantine and she never reached the castle. Tancred plans a daring rescue and succeeds...until Philip Lysander has him captured and sold as a slave. Tancred fights despair and anger as he finds out that Helena, his beloved, was sent to his Moslem cousin Prince Kalid to become his wife. With some help he manages to escape his slave owner and confronts Philip. Tancred then sets out for Antioch and the Castle of Hohms where Helena is held prisoner along with her mother by the evil Bishop Constantine. He finds Helena again only to be overtaken by soldiers of Prince Kalid and was almost killed. Helena desperately saves his life but still is faced with her dilemma of marrying the prince. After nursing Tancred back from the brink of death, they plan together their escape from the city as the crusaders under Prince Bohemond close in. There is also the assassin Mosul who framed Tancred for murder and who is the bodyguard of Prince Kalid. Tancred must confront both men over Helena and prove his innocence. A great story and conclusion of the Royal Pavilions. I will read this series again and again! Please make this rating go up!!! I can't wait to see what Linda Chaikin has for us next!

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Romance, Action, And a little History. It's "GREAT" By A Customer The royal Pavilion was one of Linda Chakins best once you read this you will want to read them all!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Series! By romancelvr Who doesn't love adventure, history and romance all tied up in one series? Well the Royal Pavilions has it all. An evil villainess, a spunky heroine, a roguish hero, a backstabbing cousin, a warrier priest, and a misguided man who's evil ambitions threaten everyone. Why hasn't this been made into a movie? An very well written series for those romance addicts out there who are sick of well-meaning but sappy Christian Romances. Bring on the adventure!

As you requested at the end of the book, here are my thoughts. Your theme, style, and your historical knowledge make me feel as if I were part of the action as I read along. I knew that this would be the case because the first book I had read several years ago was "Pompeii, The Burning City." I had just visited there for several days, and as I read that book I was able to visualize the city, streets and the homes. Your research, and descriptions are very accurate. So, yes , your books make you feel as if you are actually walking down those streets in that time period. Thank you for your excellent books.

Loved how she described Jesus as a toddler. A person doesn't really think of him at that stage of life. Seems all we speak of is baby and adult. I will be reading more Tracy Higley books for sure!

Quest of the magi By reviewsbyerin "The Incense Road" is a collection of novellas by Tracy Higley that follows the trek of the magi as they leave their Parthian home and seek the newborn King of the Jews. At first they are a large group of traders, soldiers, and scholars, each with their own motivation for the journey. In the first novella, "Star of Wonder," we meet Misha, son of the main character from Higley's previous book, The Queen's Handmaid. Misha is a first-level mage who is sure he can find shortcuts to get what he wants in life. He heads towards to the ancient country of Judea planning to steal a Jewish artifact called the Nehushtan for the gain of his own family and to keep it from the evil clutches of the sorcerer Zahir. Misha's best friend Reza, a soldier who is also possibly the rightful heir of the Persian throne, is leading the band of guards on who are accompanying the various sects of scholars on the trip. Another first-level mage, Kamillah, is of Egyptian heritage and has captured the interest of Misha, Reza, and Zahir as well. She is seeking freedom, truth, and a way to return home to Egypt. Each of these main characters feels the pressure of the heavens. The star announcing the arrival of a World Savior calls to them in a way they've never felt before. They are aware of a spiritual battle over their journey but they don't know if the heavenly forces fight for them or against them. Misha and Zahir are focused on finding the Nehushtan, while Reza and his soldiers plot to bring Persia out from under Parthia's rule upon their return home.Things become unpredictable when they reach Judea and each must decide where their loyalty lies. Through battle, imprisonment, and the continuous call of the star they will be forced to examine their motives and goals. Who will remain standing to lay their treasures at the feet of Jesus?I enjoyed this story, especially the final novella "Royal Beauty." I would recommend reading The Queen's Handmaid before The Incense Road, as it gives rich backstory to the characters and setting. I teared up at the heart-responses of those who met the young Messiah, having their fears stilled and faith affirmed by the One True God's own small Son. This book does deal quite a bit with spiritual warfare so if that makes you uneasy you should probably pass on this one. Otherwise it is a fascinating look into what the magi might have faced on their holy quest.
