The year is now 1889 and Maggie, John and baby Robert are on their rail journey to the new chosen city of Chicago. Their months aboard the whaler, Gratitude are now behind the couple, making this adventure exciting with the new horizons that await them. This being a sequel to my novel, The Little Summer of St. Luke which follows Maggie from Skye, Scotland when she is a sixteen year old, onto Glasgow, Edinburgh and then across the ocean to Nova Scotia where she meets her whaling captain, precedes this novel. This novel, The Dreamin' Tree revolves about their happy growing family and gives the reader a look into those challenging days when we find them learning to live in this bustling city, taking part in the Colombian Exposition, then a trip to Paris for the 1900 World's Fair and finally a joyous and fulfilling summer in St Louis at the Fair.. All these amid lives which are filled with daily joys and unavoidable hardships.. Maggie's everyday world is filled with her sympathetic work with the immigrants in the 'belly' of Chicago, while John is made an editor of one of the premier newspapers of the city after long years of work for the tabloid and study at the University of Chicago during his evenings. This novel gives the reader a feeling of what it was like for the middle-class family in the late 1800's and on into the early 1900's. Their adventurous undertakings interspersed with historical fact-filled episodes gives a glimpse into their happy and sometimes dangerous days in growing Chicago. As a historical novel, I have researched the places and world issues concerning this period of our history factually. Although the characters are fictitious, the facts are not. The love story of Maggie and John is as deep as the oceans they traveled. Their growing family only adds to the tremendous love they share in the many grand escapades they meet on this journey of life . Maggie has lived with her ingrained mystical beliefs that keep her an ever knowing and optimistic character. These were instilled from her childhood living on Skye with her godparents. Her beauty and loving nature are exemplary and memorable to all persons she meets. Thus it is no wonder that her being is drawn to becoming a writer for she is introspective, philosophical and extremely talented while being unassuming and always only herself.. I feel you will find her a memorable character. The person that is Maggie will be in the head and heart of the reader for many days to come.
