Pedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood: Sharing Children's Learning and Teachers' Thinking, by Susan Stacey

Review “Stacey reminds us that the value of documentation goes beyond an attractive display on the wall. She says, ‘Documentation at its best leads to reflection and dialogue.’ This book goes on to offer a number of valuable and practical examples of how to focus the work of pedagogical documentation. If we are to put the idea of teacher research into real life, pedagogical documentation is a cornerstone. Stacey’s very practical book brings the practice to life.”—Margie Carter, co-author of Designs of Living and Learning“Susan Stacey’s new book takes the reader on a journey of the transformational possibilities of pedagogical documentation. Susan interweaves the theory and practice beautifully and the photographs of the projects and documentation give readers real-life examples to inspire their journey. It takes time, but Pedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood is an excellent first stop on your journey of transformation.”—Dr. Diane Kashin, RECE, Professor, Ryerson University"How do we know if they're learning? How do we know if we're teaching? By documenting what happens and reflecting on it together. What's documentation? It's saving and sharing our stories to create mutual learning experiences for teachers and children and parents - in the author's words,"bringing families and other interested readers into the complex circle of thinking that is teaching." And the children join the construction team as they think further about their experience in response to genuine questions.Want to learn how it's done? Open this book and begin your discovery of everything you ever wanted to know about authentic assessment."—Elizabeth Jones Faculty emerita, Pacific Oaks College, Author, Emergent Curriculum; The Play's the Thing"Three cheers to Susan for writing this book! Its timing is perfect – teachers are more ready than ever to use pedagogical documentation effectively to make children’s thinking and work visible. Susan offers exciting, practical suggestions for using familiar and new technological tools to create documentation that communicates with families and children.Susan reminds us that documentation is more useful than as a display of interesting events in a classroom. With pedagogical documentation a teacher pays close attention to children’s thinking during the process of inquiry into a topic. A teacher listens and responds as children question, explore, interact, pose theories, and investigate.Susan shows us how documentation is an act of reciprocity wherein a teacher offers her response to children’s work through photos, narration, and speculation. Documentation is collaboration—when shared with a child it too becomes an object of study. Documentation is pedagogical practice that helps teachers reach beyond their certainties to consider what may be possible. We are sensitized to what is our edge and are helped to vision what may be.Pedagogical documentation honors and respects children’s thinking and capacities."—Gretchen Reynolds, Early Childhood Education, Algonquin CollegePedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood defines the process of pedagogical documentation and asks what a classroom experience says about a child’s ideas and learning process, providing keys to creating the kinds of documentation that help foster and explain children’s explorations. References and research blends with an overview that teaches how documentation is applied, analyzed, and how it contributes to both a child’s experience and family and educator discussions. Photos and diagrams accompany text instructions to provide specific insights on such documentation, offering early childhood educators all the tools to put such documentation into play and make it work for everyone, making for a top pick for any early childhood reference library.—California Bookwatch, The Education Shelf: September 2015

Preceptors have always been present in board rooms, clinical settings, schools, and work environments where onboarding and role transitions occur. They formally and informally engage in coaching and mentoring in varying degrees for a specific time period, working with students, new graduates, new employees, and individuals moving into new roles and responsibilities. Exceptional Preceptors inspire preceptees (sometimes called protégés) to excel, to explore their organizations, and to actively contribute to their own success. Effective Preceptors provide the grounding students and employees need to ensure a successful emersion into the culture and climate of their studies and work. However, for all the power Preceptors have to make or break a career depending on their motivation, preparation and support in any organization, there has been no standardization of competencies or practice for preceptoring until now. This work establishes a scope and standards of practice for advancing Preceptors in alignment with recognizing preceptoring as a specialty requiring a unique set of qualities and skills. It provides the definitions, values and beliefs, theoretical framework, scope of practice, standards of practice and competencies of preceptoring in health care as established by the American Academy for Preceptor Advancement (AAPA) Preceptor Certification Committee following an in-depth practice analysis of preceptoring in academic and healthcare facilities. This Scope and Standards of Practice for Preceptor Advancement is an essential text for practicing and aspiring certified Preceptors at every level of achievement.

For centuries, members of the Reese family, using faith, magic, and steel, have railed against the gate of Hell and all the evils that surpass human understanding. Each generation chronicles its secrets, trials, defeats, and victories for the next. For mankind, history is a battle between good and evil. For a Reese, it is their legacy. Welcome to Dark Roots, three branches of horror and heroics from the Reese Family Tree: The Hunters - England 1611. James Joshua Reese returns from the last of the Crusades only to begin another as he seeks the end of a demon’s twenty year killing spree. The Fox and Hound - Carolinas 1777. While running powder for Washington’s beleaguered army, Elias Kirby, a sorcerous privateer, runs afoul of another, more powerful magic-user, a vicious Lieutenant in the pay of King George. The Snare of the Hunted - Massachusetts 1925. Eric Reese, an adventurer and mercenary, has his evening’s rest destroyed by the terror an old friend brings to his door.

It is a collection of three short stories following members of the Reese family through the ages as they match wits, brawn, and steel with an assortment of supernatural foes, from demons to Tory wizards. Each story is a whirlwind of furious action, tightly plotted and suspenseful. Author Hunsinger is not just a fine raconteur, he has a definite talent for historical set pieces, with a convincing grasp of the language, tools, and attitudes of different time periods. The first story, The Hunters, takes place in 1611 in England, following James Reese's first encounter with the supernatural, a demon on a murder spree thru rural England. The writing is delightfully Howardian and, indeed, the story very much has the feel of a Solomon Kane adventure. The spare writing style contributes to the intensity of the confrontation, with just the right amount of descriptive detail to make the reader feel right at home in another time, and to feel the mounting terror of the encounter. The second story, The Fox and the Hound, is set during the early days of the American Revolution, following Elias Kirby, a distaff descendant of the Reese clan with various talismanic powers and mage-like perceptions, who is running the British blockade on behalf of the revolutionaries. This was my favorite story for many reasons: the action at sea, the setting amid the rum and gun runners of coastal Carolina, but most of all because of the incredibly imaginative descriptions of the magical items and techniques that pepper the story. There are no vulgar 'cast fireball' spells at work here, but magic of a more subtle and therefore infinitely more fascinating nature, like Kirby's flintlock pistol with its fixed supply of enchantments, the use of mage sight to navigate the fog-shrouded, shoal-studded Carolina coast, and the summoning of spirits and Deep One-like sea monsters to ambush smugglers. It was all wonderful and would make great inspiration for a supernatural role playing game set in the Colonial period. The third story, The Snare of the Hunted, is more H.P. Lovecraft than Robert E. Howard, and the protagonist, Eric Reese, is a little less of a swashbuckling he-man than his ancestors. Still, it gets the 1920s pulp weird fiction feel just right. Of course, Reese manages to be much more strong-willed and successful than the usual Lovecraft protagonist, managing some impromptu spell-slinging in an old mausoleum to banish another demon-on-the-rampage.On the down side, the book is marred by a few sloppy typos and an unfortunate historical error, but I was able to overlook these easily in light of the superior storytelling. Of the three stories, I thought the last was the weakest, as the more restrained, Lovecraftian style is not as well suited to the author as the bold, Howardian flourishes of the other two stories, but it was still a good yarn.Overall, this is a spectacular collection of bare-knuckled, supernatural adventure fiction and I highly, highly recommend it.

He's very descriptive in a way that is professional, like Robert E Howard or HG Wells. You can feel the horror, and he doesn't rely on gore to make you scared. In other words, he knows how to write! This book covers a few centuries, three stories featuring different men of the Reese family. They are drawn to evil, or perhaps evil is drawn to them. In any event, they must face down their hell-spawned foes in terrible combat. You can feel the tension..!Pick this up for a good night-time read. You will love it!

It switches narrorators repeatedly but doesn't become too confusing ( witch is a problem I see all the time even with really popular authors). Each story has its own protagonist and antagonist but they are all related enough to give it a sense of continuity. Very well done, excellent read. Five stars!

Abia was enjoying the slow, languid pace her relationship with Travis was taking but every time she went to mosque she felt guilty. She had only had three lovers, one of which was her ex-husband,Azir and Arik Sinclair, who she wanted to forget and Travis and she was married to her husband before he ever touched her. A Muslim woman had to be pure for her husband. She knew she was living in America and things were different and most of the time she was good but there were moments. Most recently, Travis had dropped her off and mosque and an elderly woman spoke to her after prayer. “Abia, is that your husband?” the woman asked softly. She took Abia’s hand, holding it and it was clear she was not wearing a ring. Alima was in her late forties and had befriended Abia since she joined the mosque. She was also a very traditional woman with several grown children and had been married more than twenty-five years. She had a peaceful wisdom about her. “No.” Abia said simply, unable to look into Alima’s eyes. “But he is your lover. I can sense it. It is one thing to have a non-believing husband but to share yourself with him, a man not your husband is something Allah frowns upon.” Heat rose in Abia’s chest and she removed her hand from the woman’s. “Thanks for your concern Alima.” She said as she stood and rushed to the parking lot where Travis was waiting. He noticed something was wrong but didn’t inquire after she said she was still in a meditative state. She knew Travis loved her and she loved him but marriage and their different belief systems had not been fully addressed, at least in her spirit.

I love the transition that Abia is going through, even her relationship with her brother puts a smile on my face. You can tell for both siblings (Abia and Mahad) that its different, new, but welcomed. Dona and Fernando are the best, even though I was skeptical about Dona in the other books but she's won me over. Fernando's mother and aunt are too funny!! I'm ready for the next book in the series.... So many questions Lol!!

For Abia the matter is future complicated by her strict religious upbringing. Torn between her moral beliefs, Abia takes the steps to find herself. This episode was shorter than I would have liked and briefly touched on the other characters lives as well.

Coming from a culture where she had to dance to the tune of others, she is now able to create her own music. Mildly old fashioned but concise and to the point guide to english By andys This seems to be a pretty comprehensive guide to English grammar which is to the point. There are plenty of useful examples and it covers common mistakes as well as how to write and speak clearly.Best of all it's free. What's not to like?

By Nick It's been probably over 20 years since I've had anything resembling a lesson on grammar or proper sentence construction, so I looked at this and thought, hey, a free book - why not?The book shows a bit on the age - proper use of the word "thou," for example (however, I think we should bring it back.) However I did find it useful to read and review to make sure I didn't make the same mistakes for the last 20 years, and thus, feel like an idiot. The best part is that the book's free, which makes it go from "I'd never buy this" to a "must have," even if it's for quick reference.

If you are looking for grammar instruction, look elsewhere. This little book was written 75 years ago and it has things worth thinking about, but it is not a grammar book, or a book on speaking, or a book on writing. I just bought it and am delighted to rummage about in it. It's a GEM. It's worth the money by a mile and a half. I gave it two stars only to not be lost in the shuffle. Buyers often don't look at 50 rave shill reviews but they'll look to see who doesn't like and why. So maybe I caught some readers. This is a good buy IF you KNOW IT ALL. It's not instruction, it's food for thought.
