Wolf Tongue of the Susquehannock and Lieutenant Hugh Pyke of the British Army barely survived their first mission together. Now with the French and Indian War beginning to flame around them, the frontier of the Pennsylvania Colony is restless. When they’re called back to protect Millers Town from Indian raiders, Pyke and Wolf Tongue discover the settlement is outnumbered and there is no militia to reinforce them. Even worse, Pyke and Wolf Tongue fear the townsfolk harbor secrets just as deadly as their attackers. As Pyke tries to build a haphazard defense with a band of farmers and children against an almost inevitable slaughter, the mysteries of the town begin to unravel. Pyke realizes his life is in danger from the very people he is duty-bound to protect—perhaps, even from the beautiful French outcast who seems to know more than she should. With a final, crushing attack imminent, Wolf Tongue hurries to rescue a kidnapped girl who might be the only hope for the town’s survival while Pyke struggles to protect the innocent. As they carve away layers of deceit, both men must confront the terrible truths behind Millers Town to survive the dangers to their lives, their peoples, and their honor. Through the Narrows continues the historical adventure of the Tomahawk and Saber series, filled with suspense and action that captures the deadly brutality, danger, and strength of Colonial America.

By Viviane Crystal Hugh Pike and Wolf Tongue are again working together on a task that seems to be riddled with mystery and betrayal. Wolf Tongue is silently mourning the degradation of his Sussquehannock tribe, which has lost many to disease and most of the stronger men and women to union with other tribes. However, now the tribe is being accused of attacking and murdering residents of Millers Town. Pike’s superior, the General who seems to despise him and refuses to promote him even after years of commendable service, has ordered him to investigate the Millers Town debacle and report back in three days, an almost impossible task for sure. When Pike and Wolf Tongue arrive at Millers Town, they are far from welcome and suspicion about their presence is fiercely spoken. They meet the man who reported the Indian raids, a suspicious character named Dobs and a French woman who knows a great deal but says little initially. As a war with the French is clearly looming, her words are deemed questionable. An almost immediate attack by the Indians, composed of members of various tribes, including an enemy of Wolf Tongue, occurs and reveals the cause of their anger. Pike is given an ultimatum to solve the cause or watch the massacre of the Millers Town residents. As he’s clearly outnumbered, he realizes he must solve the mystery.Through the Narrows is the second volume of this Colonial American series. While the characters and scenes are somewhat loosely constructed as far as actual reality of the Pennsylvania conditions, they do reflect the problems and terrors that truly did exist as colonialists faced divided Indian tribes and the ever-present conflicts caused by the perpetual warlike state existing between France and England, with the Americans caught in the middle. While colonial characters are rather stereotypical, he presentation of several points of view with respect to the native Indians is remarkable and interesting. For those who love adventure, a mystery, and an interest in early American history, this series by Green and Ronan is a fascinating, intense and tension-packed story. Nicely crafted!

The story takes place before the war between the British and French in the colonies. The authors openly admit in a prologue that they took some liberties with historical facts so if you are a stickler for that type of thing you may not want to read the book. If you choose not to you are missing out on a great read. I understand this is second in a series but it really does stand-a-lone.This is the story of Wolf Tongue and Lt. Hugh Pyke - two unlikely friends, who come together to save a town from the Mingos. I really like the style of writing used in Through the Narrows because it gives equal time to both Wolf Tongue and Pyke. They both struggle with helping Miller's Town because of it's duplicity - each for their own reasons - both agree that there are a few people there worth saving. The Mingos are out for blood and it seems personal but no one in the town is telling the truth. It comes down to a test of wills between Pyke and the Mingo Chief Nyakwai. While they are in battle, Wolf Tongue is in a race against time on a mission of his own. The tension builds throughout to a very exciting climax. The team of Green and Ronan have a winner here. The story is interesting and has depth. The characters are well developed and have depth as well as quirky interactions even in this tense situation. I recommend this book to all who like historical fiction with the disclaimer that I mentioned at first.I received this ebook free from the authors in exchange for a review. Ray British army lieutenant Hugh Pyke and Susquehannock warrior Wolf Tongue are brought together in another hazardous mission when they’re called upon to protect the settlement of Millers Town from Indian raiders. Upon arriving in Millers Town they discover that not only does it contain no militia, or even men with military experience, but that the town harbors secrets that endanger both men’s lives.Pyke nonetheless sets about building some kind of defense with what the town has to offer, while at the same time having to watch his back against those in town who would gladly kill to protect their secrets. On the eve of the attack Wolf Tongue has to rescue the kidnapped daughter of the Indian chief leading the attackers.Through the Narrows, book two in the Tomahawk and Saber series by Nathaniel Green and Evan Ronan is rich in historical details about pre-independence America and contains characters that are larger than life. For a peek at what life must have been like for our forefathers, this is historical fiction at its best.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

In 1935, when the bank calls in her mortgage, Sarah Picoletti – now a penniless widow – finds herself and her children on the brink of homelessness. Sick at heart, she plans to beg her brother in New Jersey to take her family in. Then Doctor Samuel Giorgi knocks on her door. Godly and well-off, Sam seems to have put the careless ways of his youth behind him, and he also appears to have one desire: to make Sarah his wife, two decades after he broke their engagement. However, nothing prepares Sarah for the storm that breaks once she makes her decision. Everywhere she turns, the errors of her former choices confront her, insisting on her inferiority and the irreparable brokenness of her past. Sarah begins to wonder if Christ really can bring true redemption or if He is limited by her frailty. Meanwhile, her daughter Grace faces new challenges in her own life. When her relationship with Paulie changes unexpectedly, Grace realizes that she must make a decision with the potential to alter both of their futures. Compassionate and intensely poignant, All Our Empty Places paints the portrait of a mother and daughter with broken pasts, who dare to step into a future overflowing with the grace of the Cross. (This is A Time of Grace, Book #2.)

All Our Empty Places (A Time of Grace) (Volume 2), by Alicia G. Ruggieri

From the Author All Our Empty Places is the second novel in a three-book series. All together, they're called the A Time of Grace trilogy. Because that's what they're about: how our gracious and merciful Heavenly Father lavished His grace on an insignificant, troubled immigrant family in the smallest state in the U.S. During the Great Depression, a time of horrendous outward destitution and poverty, three women - initially - and then the family members to whom they are connected experience the riches of God's mercy, the healing of His gentle hand, and the way in which He works all things - all things - for the good of His children. My prayer for you, dear reader who is so beloved by the Savior, is that the three A Time of Grace novels will bring you deeper and more freely along the path of faith in and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wow! Read this book :) By Raechel Oh my, what a terrifically splendid book this is! I truly loved it. It was beautiful, and heart-rending. In a good way, mind you. :)I just loved it. I loved the characters – being reunited with them after finishing “The Fragrance of Geraniums” was absolutely delightful. Alicia Ruggieri writes in such a realistic way that you can’t help but think of the characters as real people. They have real beauty and real struggles. They are, in full, delightful. When beginning “All Our Empty Places”, I was of course, overjoyed, but also curious to see how I’d like it since it focused more on Sarah, the mother. As a young adult, I relate best with Grace, but I couldn’t have been any more thrilled with watching Sarah’s journey than I was while reading this book! What I loved was how it was a struggle – it was gritty. Sarah didn’t experience a ‘everything is all better now that I know Christ’ transformation – it was so much more than that. Of course her life WAS better having Christ as her Savior, but there are still bumps along the road. We are all so broken. And I LOVE the verse used in the end: “And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9The overall theme of this book – that God is our sufficiency – was astounding and deeply touching. Just the morning that I finished reading “All Our Empty Places”, I read the verse that says we are complete in Christ – I thought it resounded beautifully with this book. By ourselves, we are nothing but shattered pieces. But with Christ, we are beautiful pieces of art – even in our brokenness. He takes our brokenness and makes us beautiful. "Dreams of a Promised Land" is a continuation of a series that began with the novel "Crimes of a Guilty Land". The series follows the story of the Beauchamp family from the early nineteenth century. "Dreams of a Promised Land" takes the story from 1920 through the early 1970s. “…The P-51 Mustang was in a full power dive. The airframe was shaking as it reached or most likely exceeded its maximum rated airspeed, but Adam Beauchamp was calm and focused as the new and revolutionary enemy Me262 jet fighter came within range. This was the moment he had trained for…” That moment in Adam Beauchamp’s life seemed far removed from the simple and almost idyllic years when he was growing up in Leesburg, Florida. After being abandoned by his parents at a young age, he had been raised by a loving couple who taught him the basics of life. He had spent hours with his Uncle Vernon fishing on Lake Harris, and he had enjoyed so many whimsical and fun filled times with friends. During one Spring-time, at the age of fourteen, he spent some time in Micanopy, Florida. There he not only found his future vocation in life, but he also learned a thing or two about girls. But during his childhood years, Adam was also continually reminded of his being an African American boy. He was black, and he gradually came to learn that some people had bad feelings about him and his family. He became very aware that in fact some people had bad feelings about all of the black people. He experienced some of the racial prejudice and behavior of those times. He learned to be careful. His Uncle Vernon taught him to be ‘respectful.’ Adam learned humiliation. The novel is primarily the memoirs of Adam Beauchamp, a successful writer and the grandson of Brownie who was one of the principal characters in "Crimes of a Guilty Land". Young Adam is desperate to learn some background to his family, and in particular concerning his parents who had walked out of his life when he was very young. An unexpected call to visit his Grandfather Brownie in 1942 yields a treasure trove of information and starts Adam down a road of discovery. That road takes him through the world of Blues musicians in the Mississippi Delta and in the City of Memphis, and through war time service as a Tuskegee Airman. Then Adam enters the Civil Rights movement with unexpected results. Love, humor, historical background and tragedy are all discovered along the way.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Enlightening Historical Fiction By Hank Lajoie With World War II as its historical time frame, the story begun in Crimes of A Guilty Land continues the tale of the Beauchamps, the end of Brownie’s life and family growth. Unfortunately, Adam, the main character in this continuing saga, also suffers under the old curses left behind by the freeing of slaves. Even though he succeeds both as a Tuskegee Airman and a journalist, his exposure to the hatred for his race nearly robs him of his happiness. His grandfather Brownie espoused peaceful endeavor to end racism and gain equality. Despite a number of setbacks, Adam adopts that philosophy as well. At the end, Adam’s writings are added to Brownie’s, with the promise of more to come. These two books give the reader insight into history at the ground level ... no famous dates to remember ... just a look at the day to day existences of that period. If possible, I would give both books six stars!

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

I'm finding that as I read more, it becomes easier.I've never read anything by H.G. Wells before, so I really didn't have a reference point as I did with Sherlock Holmes, the Secret Garden, and the Sixty Year Dream. But they gave me the foundation to get through this book with greater ease. I found that I could pronounce most of the characters. Just pick up these books and read them! They are a great break from online lessons, flash cards, etc. And they give you greater context than a simple conversion in a Chinese lesson with Chinese narration. Hope they publish more level 1s and look forward to the level 2s!

Fun and easy way to reinforce basic characters By Jeff Mather I have been learning Chinese for quite a while, so this was quite easy for me (although a bit harder than The Secret Garden). I think that intermediate learners can greatly benefit from this type of reading since it reinforces character recognition and basic sentence patterns. Also, it's nice to just read at a relaxing pace and not have to look up words - the adaptation is well done and they managed to hold my interest despite the limited number of words they could use. It's a particularly good reading experience on an iPad because you can get pop up definitions if you're stuck (otherwise the authors have provided useful footnotes that should help people to avoid relying on a dictionary). I look forward to reading the rest of these graded readers.

Wells classic By The Doctor Surprise ending but otherwise a simplified (and shortened) adaptation of the original by H. G. Wells. Well written with simple grammar and vocabulary to make it more accessible to the Chinese language learner.

For the Newbie - Read When Your Oldest is in Grade 6 or 7 - I Knew All of This Already By ChristineMM Binz begins this short Coffee Break book with encouragement that homeschooling high school can be done and can be a superior education to public school. She then advises we build "margin" into our lives (a reference to self-help books written by Dr. Swensen). She wants us to leave room in our lives to keep our sanity.Advice on choosing curriculum is given but it is general and Binz does not push one style or method of homeschooling or any specific curriculums. She and I are in agreement that weaknesses need to be worked on. Binz encourages homeschooling mothers to educate themselves about education and learning. As the teen years begin, Binz feels that the teens need to have input on choosing the curriculum and to respect their personal preferences. I agree with all of this.Next the typical high school scope and sequence is discussed. This is pretty common knowledge and is covered in some of her other Coffee Break ebooks: four years of English, four years of Math, et cetera.A chapter focuses on learning disabilities and struggling learners. This is a skimpy chapter and more will be necessary to truly inform parents of LD kids. She doesn't say much except to get accommodations for high stakes testing and look for colleges that have special services for disabled students (this covers kids with LDs).Binz then spends a chapter discussing different ways to collect data in order to write summaries and transcripts. This was not covered in any of the more than a handful of Coffee Break books that I read and I enjoyed hearing of different ways to collect the information (bins, binders and other ideas) and what types of lists to make. She recommends what to keep and what to throw away. The book wraps up with a short section on the main things to do each year, such as start thinking about college in grade 9, start planning for college in grade 10, and so on.The Resources section at the end actually contains a chapter on single parenting such as when you suddenly find yourself divorced. After purchasing this book look on the page following the cover to find a link to purchase a webinar from The Home Scholar for one penny. I just noticed that and have not done that yet.I rate this book 3 stars = It's Okay. I found the information very general and perhaps with a rising junior I am too far into the journey already to expect to learn anything new. This I think would be best for a parent of a 6th or 7th grader to read. It is a gentle 40 page introduction to the topic of how to homeschool high school.

Encouraging Read Especially for New Homeschoolers By Debbie While there is not a great deal of specific home school curriculum advice there is a strong element of encouragement in this book. Any homeschoolerwho questions whether they are making the right decision to home school or continue home schooling should take a moment to sit down with a cup ofcoffee or tea and read it. It will be a good reminder of why a home schooling parent should be confident in their ability to map out their child'shigh school years. If you are a veteran homeschooler of many years you will probably already be very familiar with most of what the author issaying. However, it's for the encouragement in what you are already doing that this book is valuable. Single parents will find a numberof links to helpful articles in the chapter written expressly for them.

A Great Way to Get Started or Check Progress By Kelly Harbaugh I have one student entering his senior year of home school and one that will be starting high school in a year. This book is a great way to get the right mind set to start the school year and make sure that you are not forgetting important tasks.Above all, Lee is a master of instilling confidence in homeschooling moms, and this book is no exception. We need to have a pep talk every once in awhile to remind us why we are our child's best teacher and why we have chosen to do this. I can't count the number of times I reached for the things I have learned from Lee Binz from my "mental files" to give me the confidence that I need. This was a great quick read that reinforced all of those lessons.

Escaping Yesterday, by Pamela Nowak

Review "A young woman shows how far she'll go to save her daughter from an awful fate...[the] story is greatly enriched by the historical details Nowak provides on the real-life Elitch's Gardens, which existed from 1890 to 1994, when it was moved closer to downtown Denver." -Kirkus"Nowak brilliantly weaves the history of the actual park into her story and skillfully paints a vivid picture of life there. She deftly handles the delicate topics of incest and PTSD without becoming maudlin. It's easy to visualize the animals, rides and Caleb's flowerbeds as conveyed by Nowak's beautiful prose."              --Romantic Times Book Reviews"Nowak is as skilled with settings as she is with emotional tone. Elitch's Gardens was a real amusement park in Denver, and the rides, animals, and Mary Elitch Long and her husband Tom are brought to vivid life again."   --Historical Novel Society"Pam Nowak's Escaping Yesterday, with its fresh setting and memorable characters, is an entertaining page turner. I thoroughly enjoyed it."--Jill Marie Landis on Escaping Yesterday

The year is 1905. Lottie Chase leaves the New York home of her sexually abusive Uncle Edward and cruel Aunt Aggie, taking her ten-year-old daughter Elsa with her. Elsa is the child of the sexual abuse forced on Lottie when she was not much older than her daughter. Lottie has understandably confused feelings about her sexuality but she is a brave, intelligent young woman determined to make a new life for herself and her child. Caleb Hudson is also emotionally wounded. He suffers from post traumatic stress syndrome brought about during his service in the Spanish-American War.Lottie and Caleb are attracted to each other but also at odds. Lottie is a go-getter and wants a permanent job at Elitch Gardens (a real-life Denver amusement park). Caleb is suspicious of her desire and ideas for change. The characters are well-developed, realistic and sympathetic. Nowak’s research is impeccable. She doesn’t info dump but creates a true picture of the people and the times as well as the park itself. This is not a formula romance but an excellent novel that readers will want to enjoy more than once because it is so well-written. I highly recommend it.

The characters come alive with authentic dialect and voice from the time period. Lottie is shown to endure many of the same injustices as young women today including sexual molestation, family secrets, and trying to be all the society expects her to be. Pamela has shown great representation of Lottie as a historical woman dealing with issues we can relate to today. Caleb is dealing with PTSD but since it was not given a name or a diagnosis at that time in history, the reader is drawn in to the struggles of military both today and in the past. Reading some of the true history of Elitch's gardens inspired me to want to know more about the history of the gardens, and more about the history of carousels. Thank you Pamela! Can't wait for the next book!

I was intrigued by the time period and the place (I used to live in Colorado). The characters were very well developed, with great backstories and dialogue.
