It's a school for girls and Madeleine is a teacher there. Her father is French and her mother English which means she's fluent in two languages. They've always been a happy family, but then something awful happens and Madeleine loses both of her parents. Because her best friend Sophie is in a difficult situation they decide to go to France. Together with the French comte Etienne d'Aubery they're traveling to Paris where he has a house. It's the time of the French revolution and it isn't safe in the big city. Etienne offers to stay with Madeleine and Sophie to make sure they're all right, so they continue their journey and arrive at his countryside chateau, Château Mirabelle.Madeleine and Sophie are staying in a beautiful cottage near the chateau and they're enjoying their time in France. They can't tell anyone they're English, so they have to keep their identity a secret. Etienne has a handsome assistant, Jean-Luc, and they're best friends, but even he can't know who Madeleine and Sophie really are. Both men want Madeleine's attention, but there's only one of them she really likes... The revolution also reaches the village and France is in turmoil. The country is at war and a lot of young men are recruited to fight. Being nobility is dangerous. Will the castle still be a safe place to stay? The Chateau on the Lake is a beautiful story about a woman who goes to France in a very dangerous time. Madeleine wants to know more about her ancestors and she can't wait to find some information or to even meet them. Fortunately Etienne is there to help her and Sophie. They don't have to travel by themselves. Etienne is brooding and dark, but he also has a kind side. He has a difficult past and is not very approachable. That made him such an interesting main character. I was intrigued by all the characters in this book and I really liked Madeleine, I think she's a wonderful heroine.I love reading books about France and think Charlotte Betts has written a story that is both interesting and gripping. There are a lot of thrilling scenes because of the dangers of the revolution. The story kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time. I could really feel the unrest and the fear, which was in complete contrast with the tranquility of the amazing surroundings. I enjoyed the descriptions of the chateau and the French countryside. The story is also quite romantic and I loved the clever plot. If you like historical fiction this is a book you don't want to miss.

The Chateau on the Lake By Marablaise The year is 1792 and young Madeleine Moreau travelers to France after a tragedy to find out more about her father's family. She is not alone, she travelers with her friend Sophie who for her own personal reasons need to go away from her family. Also, with them is Comte Etienne d'Aubery who offers them to stay with him in France since the country is in turmoil. If I have to read a romance book is a historical romance probably my first chose. But that probably quite logical since I find historical books generally interesting. Especially if the subject is interesting and I have always found the French Revolution interesting. The Chateau on the Lake was a pleasant surprise because the story never got too cheesy. I can't stand romance novels with a cheesy story or with characters that are not believable. But the story in The Chateau on the Lake was really good, from the beginning to the end and the characters were well done and not flat. There was a love triangle between Madeline, Etienne and his Jean-Luc, an old friend of Etienne who works at Chateau Mirabelle. But the love triangle never got really frustrating irritating to read about. Mostly because Madeleine's feelings for Etieene was hard to miss, at least I thought so.I liked this historical romance very much, I especially liked that it took place during the French Revolution which meant that both Madeline and Sophie had to be careful not to reveal that they are English and not French. That made the story so much more fascinating. Madeleine and Sophie do what they can to blend in and build up a life and at the same time they must be very careful not to reveal themselves to the people around that doesn't know the truth.Charlotte Betts has written a wonderful book and I'm looking forward to reading more books by her. It was really refreshing to read a romance book with a strong female character and an engaging story.

Fast paced, evocative and unexpected By Alba in Bookland The Chateau on the Lake is a beautifully written historical novel set at the end of the 18th century in London and France. Life in London is quiet and easy for Madeleine Moreau. She works as a teacher in her parents academy for girls and shares her views, political and social, in parties and salons. She is a cultivated woman, intelligent and strong, something not very common in that time. In fact, Charlotte Betts starts the book with "It is often said that an educated woman is an abomination in the eyes of God". This gives a hint of who Madeleine is and how she'll act during the story. However, even though opinionated and smart, she is also naive. She has no idea how the Revolution is affecting France and what consequences it'll have in the future of society. Discussing this topic in a party is when she meets the Comte Etienne d'Aubery. He appears to be an arrogant aristocrat with a cold façade. And after this first encounter I didn't think he would play a big role in the story. How wrong was I! When Madeleine loses everything she cares about in London and decides to go find her father's family in France with no knowledge of the situation there and with the only protection of her friend Sophie, Etienne kindly offers to escort them and offers invaluable protection. In France, things are getting agitated and after the King's decapitation, it is no longer safe for Madeleine and Sophie to walk freely in the country, so Etienne comes again to the rescue offering them a place to life in his state, the Chateau Mirabelle. But life doesn't stop at the Chateau. Our friends find themselves in the middle of secrets, protest, revolts and betrayals. Making this magical place feel far from the fairy tale it could be. Madeleine and Etienne's friendship soon becomes something more but circumstances of the past make it impossible for them to act on it so she seeks refuge in Jean Luc's arms, the state manager at the Chateau. I can tell you that I didn't like Jean Luc and I was sure he was on a mission but I could have not imagined what was to come. So many unexpected twists in the story kept me gripped to its pages for hours. But what makes this story shine is the setting and the research you can tell there has been behind the story. Charlotte Betts takes you on a colourful and detailed history lesson to the most stunning places. Reading Madeleine and Etienne's story you feel like you are the Chateau with them, with its turrets and views over the lake. You hear the French people chanting and shouting in the streets of Paris. You sense the change happening the in the society, the fears of the upper classes and the euphoria of the lower classes. The blood spilling in the altercations and the public executions. A true master class in the French Revolution and not only how it affected the capital but also the country.Fast paced, evocative and unexpected, The Chateau on the Lake is a must read for historical fiction old and new fans. I am sure in this story there's something for everyone and I can't recommend it enough.

Best Ebook Those Kids, Our Schools: Race and Reform in an American High School, by Shayla Reese Griffin

In Those Kids, Our Schools, Shayla Reese Griffin examines patterns of racial interaction in a large, integrated high school and makes a powerful case for the frank conversations that educators could and should be having about race in schools. Over three years, Griffin observed students, teachers, and administrators in a “post-racial” exurban high school in the Midwest. In its hallways, classrooms, lunchrooms, and staff meetings, she uncovered the disturbing ways in which racial tensions and prejudices persist and are reinforced. Students engaged in patterns of behavior that underscored racial hierarchies. Teachers—no matter how intellectually committed to equity and diversity—often lacked the skills, resources, or authority to address racial issues, while administrators failed to acknowledge racial tensions or recognize how school practices and policies perpetuated racial inequality. This astute and thoughtful book offers a revealing glimpse into the world of young people struggling with the legacy of racism. More important, it highlights the disservice being done to all students in our schools when educators fail to critically interrogate issues of race. Griffin’s perceptive analysis illuminates the persistent influence of race in our education system and shows how—with appropriate support—teachers and students can develop the capacity to address racial issues and dynamics in schools in a frank and constructive way.

Those Kids, Our Schools: Race and Reform in an American High School, by Shayla Reese Griffin

Review "The text provides useful suggestions for 'making change in schools,' and ... [offers] questions that could initiate true dialogue in staff development situations." — A.W. Peterson, Choice Magazine

From the Back Cover Those Kids, Our Schools examines patterns of racial interaction among students, teachers, and administrators in a large, integrated public high school. Griffin’s perceptive analysis illuminates the persistent influence of race in our schools and classrooms. She shows how teachers and students can develop the capacity to address racial dynamics in schools in a frank and constructive way, and highlights the disservice being done to all students when educators fail to critically interrogate issues of race.   “In Those Kids, Our Schools, Shayla Griffin makes a vital contribution to our understanding of race. As her examination of one high school shows, race does not exist as a quantifiable, tangible reality; it is made and remade following familiar precepts and patterns but combined in ways specific to the present.” — From the foreword by William Jelani Cobb   “Shayla Griffin has written an acutely insightful text on the ways race shapes the lived experiences of all young people. Through her careful ethnography of social spaces in a diverse high school, she meticulously peels back the layers of racial denialism and silence to show why what is left unsaid or unacknowledged about race is harmful. This book should be read by anyone wishing to understand if race still matters in the lives of young people and provides grounded advice on what can be done to improve our schools for all our kids.” — R. L’Heureux Lewis-McCoy, associate professor, sociology and black studies, The City College of New York  Shayla Reese Griffin is the diversity and school culture consultant for the Washtenaw (Michigan) Intermediate School District and director of Creating Culturally Proficient Communities, a five-year initiative to improve racial and economic justice in Ypsilanti Community Schools.  William Jelani Cobb is an associate professor of history and the director of the African Studies Institute at the University of Connecticut.

There are some eye-opening descriptions of race relations in this school, both among students, between students and staff, and among staff members. I am personally familiar with the school that was studied here (its name has been changed) but I definitely suspect that the author's findings are likely to hold true at many other schools nationwide. This should be a wake-up call for educators about what kind of environment we are creating, and whether we are willing to engage in self-reflection about our own personal biases that may influence us each day.

Rumors of the Soviet's impending return to attack on Poland in 1981 causes Jakub to flee the country in terror of a repeat of WWII, only to discover the attack is from government officials imposing a state of war upon its own people – exiling him permanently and forcing him to forge his own path to safety and freedom from political persecution, from country to country, border to border, battling bullets, police, border patrol, thieves, lovers, maximum security prisons, the Italian mafia, and impending death on a path which test the strength, courage, and friendships of a man with an incredible will to survive. Chasing Borders is a complex, dangerous, sexy and funny 57,000 word historical fiction novel about a man who risked everything in escaping from the Communist oppression created by Poland’s Government officials’ decision to declare Martial Law on its people. He encounters the harsh reality of his decision on the first night of his escape, when he and his friends are robbed of everything but the clothes on their backs, in the dead of winter in Romania. Jakub’s intense survival instincts kicked in as they were forced to leave Romania and cross the deadly border into Yugoslavia, a country torn in pieces after the death of President Josip Broz Tito the previous year. Thrown into a maximum security prison after prison, he is finally released and told to head towards Italy, the only country that would harbor political refugees. After the assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II earlier that year, once more Jakub was faced with a less than friendly welcome into another foreign country. Finding safety in a camp for refugees in Latina, Italy, Jakub takes advantage of President Ronald Reagan opening the doors to Poland’s political refugees and offering them safe passage to the United States, but has the misfortune of entangling himself with the 'Ndrangheta mafia in the Calabria region of South Italy prior to his departure, leaving him with a deadly decision – to leave or to stay.

I have had bed bugs before and have been paranoid about them ever since. After reading the information on their site and seeing the numerous different professionals in the industry posting even YouTube videos about it, I decided to buy it and give it a shot. Well as it turns out I still had a minor infestation and my paranoia was warranted. The Bedbugdot saved me tons of money by catching the bugs early so I could get quick treatment and it wasn't my whole house. I am buying more of these because I want to be sure I am safe going forward. The key to using this product is using the Hotspots they tell you to put the dots in and checking the dots for signs every once and a while. The best part is they can be well hidden from plain sight. Awesome product.

Abou-nassar Love this product! it really works!! we kept waking up with bumps on us thinking it was mosquitoes bites or a rash than one day my friend suggested it may be bed bugs. So I went out and bought this. Turns out that we did have bed bugs. Luckily we caught them early enough so we were able to professionally get rid of them before they had the chance to keep multiplying! I highly recommend this! Now I am super cautious wherever I go!
