When discussing Israel and its long history of conflict, the emotions are so charged and, for many, the stakes are so high that even engaging in a simple conversation about the subject can be like running a marathon of endlessly heated ideas and never-ending historical perspectives.

In telling this story, I am not interested in taking any side. I just want to tell the story of how one small nation and a small group of people have had the tenacity and courage to defy the odds and preserve an ancient culture that has become the epicenter of not just conflict but religion, philosophy and human society as a whole.

Because Israel has contributed so much to all of us; what was once just an Israeli culture has grown to become what is, by and large, an inherited world culture. As the scriptures promised to Abraham, "I will make your descendants countless as the dust of the earth; if anyone could count the dust upon the ground, then he could count your descendants;" (Genesis 13:16) I believe that this scripture does hold true.

Because the whole earth has indeed benefited and been greatly influenced from the powerful traditions and thought that have reverberated from Israel throughout history. Since the days of the Covenant that was made with Abraham in the desert, we have all become great inheritors of this tradition.

With an inheritance that is as countless as the dust of the earth. Many great and wonderful things have come out of Israel and its people and the world would just not be the same without it.

A Must Read Book By Iya Vasquez 3 This was a difficult book for me to read or review as it contains material seldom supplied in the usual sources available to me. However, I think it very important to reconsider the direction of a country so necessary for the survival of Jews, and a country that calls itself the only democracy in the Middle East.I read many facts in this book that I was totally unaware of, yet somewhere deep inside I had always questioned the total animosity existing in this tiny country. I felt the tension when visiting several times, despite loving the area and what I thought it stood for.It is not an easy read, and I wanted to go back over a number of sections in order to better understand what had taken place earlier, but I'm not that familiar yet with finding things on my Kindle, so eventually, I may re-read this book in regular book form!I strongly recommend reading this book, written by the grandson of one of the early founders, in order to see and try to understand that in order to remain a viable country, perhaps it is important to open more dialogue, both within the Israeli community and if at all possible, with the surrounding countries. Or I worry this miracle country will no longer be "My Promised Land"!

By Happy_in Hawaii The tests were at about the same level that you could expect on the actually SSAT. The explanations to the answers in the back of the book were easy enough for my 8yr old 3rd grader to understand. I bought just about every SSAT book on Amazon and this was in my top three of usefulness!!

Good practice tests but no way to calculate the scaled score By beaky's mom The test questions and explanations are of good quality, but there is no table for converting raw scores to scaled scores. Without that information, you really can't tell how well you've done or if you're prepared for the real thing.

In the stunning follow up to The Secrets of Life and Death, Rebecca Alexander has created a gripping supernatural thriller that bridges time, legend and the power of blood.   Following her showdown with Elizabeth Bathory, Jackdaw Hammond is running from her past, hiding from her future, and hoping to contain her newfound thirst for blood. Buying an overgrown home in the middle of nowhere seems like the perfect place to escape…at least until she finds herself in the sights of a murderous family with a terrible secret and a penchant for dark magic. Meanwhile, her old ally Felix Guichard has gone to New Orleans to conduct his own investigation into the nature of blood magic, but is soon sucked into the intrigues of the city’s occult underworld. But Jack will need Felix more than she knows, for the battle for her soul is set to begin.   Her only salvation may lie with the secrets of 16th century master occultist Edward Kelley, and a dangerous mission he undertook in Venice to confront the Inquisition, the darkest deeds of his own past, and the fearsome power of Elizabeth Bathory.

Hamby I was able to finish this and it was engaging enough to keep me from stopping and reading something else while in the midst of it. But the plot seems thin, as if the author had an idea and a deadline..and that was it. It just never seemed to expand as it progressed as the attempt to uncover and then make sense of what was discovered.Sorry for the brevity, but it simply did not seem to come together as a novel, let alone a sequel that should have built on the previous book. The characters seem flat and the plotting seems way too contrived to really bring any sort of suspense or even simple engagement in caring what happens next. If you liked the first book, it has some appeal. But if you are looking for something along this lines, you might want to follow the links to something else.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. i really liked Secrets of Life and Death, but this needs some tweaking... By WB Halper Secrets of Blood and Bone – Book ReviewA lot of time and effort goes into writing a work of historical fiction, which is why I dislike giving Secrets of Blood and Bone less than stellar marks…but it simply doesn’t deserve them. Secrets of Life and Death, the first volume in the set, was well written and had excellent plot and character development. Blood and Bone doesn’t meet that standard. The plot is thin and the story drags. The Jack/Felix relationship is unnatural and unreal…it has the emotional depth of a puddle. Wolves and werewolves appear halfway through the book, giving this reader the immediate impression that they were included to check off a box on the “What I need to include in my novel” list. Characters move from place to place without coherent transitions. A couple times, I completely lost track of their location. Not good.As another reviewer said, this book could benefit from a significant rewrite. Based on the first book in series, the author has the ability to deliver more. I wish she did.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read Not: The Secrets of Blood and Bone By Kassie Boyd (Quick note: From other reviews I've looked at, there seems to be a very descriptive sexual assault in the book that is continually brought up. By the time I stopped reading, I had not gotten to it yet, so I cannot comment on it. Please keep your triggers in mind if you pick up this book.)The second book in the Jackdaw Hammond series by Victoria Alexander and I'm already not looking forward to this as it seems to be a run of the mill Twilight knockoff.I just want to say that, first, I haven't read the first book and after reading this one, I have no interest to. Second, I tried very hard to finish this book, but I could not do it. It's boring, repetitive, and there's nothing to really link the three ongoing stories together.I decided to pick up this book despite knowing what it was because the back cover gave me hope for something more interesting than a dreary and dry romance story. The description leads one to expect a supernatural mystery with vampires and magic. As of what I've forced myself to read, that doesn't seem to be the case. What we do have is a story that flipflops between three different main characters and third and first person point of views, the first being Jackdaw and her friend Sadie as they clean out the destroyed home of a…the book doesn't say how Jack is related to this woman, though she may be someone's aunt or great aunt. The second story takes place in the past, involving what I can only presume is the 'historical' part of this book that is historical fiction. I've honestly never heard of Edward Kelley, so I cannot say if I should know of him or if he's only prevalent in England's common knowledge. In the past, Kelley is called to Venice to conduct research but stumbles upon a more sinister plot related to the main villain of the last book. Or I assume so since their last names are the same. The third part, and I suppose the 'erotic' part of the book features Jack's love interest Felix Guichard in New Orleans researching blood's effects on people who drink it.That’s a lot going on in one book and it's really way too much. In fact, this is enough to plot two, even three books, not one. For a woman who prides herself on having a MA in Creative Writing, I would expect Mrs. Alexander to know this. It really hurts this book. The most interesting part of this book is what Jack is doing, because she is our main character, and yet we spend so little time with her. We spend more time with Kellie and Felix in the first eight chapters than with Jack and what the pull of this story is supposed to be: the questionable death of the house's previous owner, the mysterious family that threatens Jack and Sadie, and the magic garden.Speaking of Felix's side of the story, it goes nowhere. It’s just the author rambling on about how she did some research online and wanted to tell you what she found about 'real life' vampires. If this was used in the plot in some manner, this would be interesting, but it's not so it isn't. Instead, we have the same obvious question being asked over and over again: "are there any side effects to blood drinking?"Keep in mind, I have not read the first book, but Jack is a vampire, or at least a corpse of some kind. It doesn't matter how you dress it up or what you call them, she is a vampire. I bring this up because I don't understand why Felix is asking the above question. I don't even understand why he couldn't take five minutes to think about why drinking blood would or wouldn't have side effects and thus have his answer like any one would do when posed with this question. For such an 'intelligent' man - or I assume he is as he mentions having an office, traveling, and observing rituals and studying the occult - he acts as if he's never studied how blood can carry pathogens, much less considered all the times he's sure to have ingested a small amount of blood from either a cut lip or any steak he’s ate in the past.To further waste our time, each book starts with a needless quote, such as the ones being from the perspective of the garden. What all this comes down to is it needlessly slows down the pace of the book and most of these different perspectives and information could have either been integrated into the story or removed completely. Because of all the jumping and the introduction of so many side characters who are just as bland, I started to forget who they were or what they were there for, which is the worst thing to do in any mystery story where the reader is expected to keep up.To make this worse, some of the sentence structure is strange. This could simply be because I am American and the author is English, but I think it's more along the lines of it made since in her head, but no one bothered to give it another look before she published it.I also don’t understand why we go out of our way to make the American characters dislike the ‘British’ nature of English characters. For example:(Page 33) ”He’ll talk to me though. If you come along, and don’t act so – British - he might get you into one of the (vampire fetish) clubs.”What does this even mean? Is the author implying that Americans think English people are shy virgins and stuffy prudes? Or is she trying to say Americans are loose and wild? Either way, I take offense at the author’s stereotyping. If you have not read the first book, then you will not know or understand the in universe terminology that this series uses. The book casually throws out that Jack and Sadie are 'Barrowed Timers'. What does that mean? If I have to guess, the author needs to go back and rewrite into the story a quick explanation. I've said it before in my review of Unholy Magic: you cannot expect that the person reading your second book has read your first book or will even go back to read your first book. As an author, you must take the time to explain in every book what you expect to be common knowledge to the reader. It doesn't have to be as detailed as the explanation in the first book, but it should basically be a cliff note for new readers and a reminder for returning readers. In conclusion, don’t buy this book. There is nothing for you here.I'd like to thank BLOGING FOR BOOKS for a free print copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

By Rob Natiuk To write an essay well, the steps are not easy, as the author claims. But it would be harder to learn how to write a clear and thoughtful essay without these steps. As the author points out later in this book, don't be verbose -- don't fluff-up your sentences. Don't write stuff like: "It is noticeable in the aforementioned paragraph...." (Loc. 166). Nor do you need a 3-page copyright statement for 27-page book! The 4 steps are quite good and helpful, along with a few examples given. I think the author, though, confuses students having to write essays for assignments and authors writing essays for publication. Whichever one is your goal, outlining and pre-writing can make writing flow more easily. And don't be an editor while writing your first draft! Allow yourself to write whatever comes to your mind. Then re-write and edit.A person who wants to write great essays could've benefited from more resources -- in this book none were given.

Detailed instructions and step by step pictures make finger painting a totally exciting adventure. The written directions are easy to follow and the results are quite achievable by amateurs and professionals. You can have your own Van Gogh or Monet style painting with your own creative touches. I have had the privilege of painting three of these examples from the book alongside Iris Scott in a live workshop setting, and the finished paintings are bright, Impressionistic treasures that are proudly hanging in my home. I love the squiggly lines, the chunky strokes, the dots and the dabs illustrated in the techniques section of the book. Her sky and trees are spectacular! She shares her techniques generously, and her book will become a “Bible” of artists who love Impressionism and vibrant colors. Cleanup is super easy using paper towels with the super water-based Holbien oil paint. I find that putting my gloved fingers into thick, rich paint is also therapeutic and peaceful.”

By Aleksandr Grabovskiy I thought that it was impossible to make "serious work" without brushes, but after completing the first two lessons in this book I am never looking back. I have toyed around with painting for years and spent so much money on brushes and cleaners and solvents. I always felt like if I just had one more brush or a better easel, I could really start. All you need for the weekend workshop is a canvas, paints, and some latex gloves! it is so liberating to have such a simple set of tools to really work with. There is absolutely no excuse to not produce a really quality piece of art-- all the steps are well-explained in a super confidence boosting way. Before this book I had never finished a single painting, and, trust me, if I can do it anybody can. The author has a really reassuring writing style. I agree with the book's recommendation that you should invest in good paint. The paint practically does half the work and all of the other tools are so inexpensive you will save plenty of money to be able to get the good stuff. If you think you can't paint, or keep putting it off all the time, this book is a guarantee that you will have an amazing painting right away!

By Port Gardner Law Group I just received my copy, I also bought one for a gift. This is a beautifully illustrated book with step by step detailed color instructions on how to create these beautiful paintings she is known over the world for. Her personal tips and product endorsement is invaluable. I can't wait to begin creating my own finger paintings. Get a group together and have some fun! It's not just a great teaching tool, but would be a beautiful addition for your coffee table!

Atlantis On the Shores of Forever (Volume 1), by Jennifer McKeithen

About the Author Jennifer McKeithen has always been fascinated by lost civilizations, dusty old libraries, and tales of adventure. It was only natural that she should begin to write as a distraction from the doldrums of her mundane existence. In her spare time/research for her stories, she enjoys Classical and Medieval history, reading lots of fiction, cooking, herbalism, and English Country dancing. Recently, she has learned to appreciate the fun and excitement of riding horses, hiking, canoing, and climbing Mayan pyramids. Jennifer would be quite content to live the life of a traveling literary beach bum—like Hemingway, only with a brighter outlook. Her husband, Japheth, hopes her books will become famous one day, so he can at last “live the life he’s accustomed to.” Until then, they’ve settled for making their home in Kansas City, Missouri. Atlantis On the Shores of Forever is her first published novel. Find her on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/atlantisontheshoresofforever/

An historical romance but with so much information about a period that isn't well taught. Thank you for taking the time to share your passion for this period. Maewyn Succat is born to be Decurian and Deacon of Maglona and rejects these Roman-British ideals, but when his mischievous deeds cause the deaths of his two best friends, he allows himself to be kidnapped by pirates, a fitting penance, and sold into slavery. He falls in love with Annika, his Master’s favorite concubine, and rekindles his faith. The barbarians resist conversion, calling him a Pat Rick, a slur that means a crazy zealot or a faithful fool, and he accepts their derision and embraces the name. He is a faithful fool. He plans to escape and bring Annika with him to Briton. In his letter of Confession, St. Patrick alludes to a great sin that placed him on trial and under threat of excommunication, but never states it directly. Scholars debate three possibilities: paganism, premarital sex, or murder. Why choose? My Patrick is no saint, he is a man dealing with the difficulties of life in the 5th century and struggling to save the people of Ireland just as Rome is about to fall.

I couldn't put it down! It has courtroom drama, romance, some violence, and touching moments. You will never think about Saint Patrick, or his day, the same after reading this wonderful imaginative work. I highly recommend it.
