A Concise Introduction to Logic, by Patrick J. Hurley

Review "What I like perhaps most about Hurley's text is the organization of the material. His book introduces the material in step-by-step way, building off of what was just learned the section before and adding just enough information to each section to simplify the whole process of learning logic.""This is the 'gold standard' of introductory logic texts.""It is the clearest text, with the best technology available.""Hurley has. . . always been straight to the point and clear on definition. Now, it is much more expanded with modern and creative examples that ease up on the tenseness inherent in learning logic.""Hurley's text provides a methodical introduction to the strategies and techniques usually covered in an introductory logic course, including both formal and informal topics. Numerous exercises provide plenty of opportunity for students to practice the skills they have learned."

About the Author Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a Physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. In 1972 he began teaching at the University of San Diego, where his courses have included logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987 he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. He retired from teaching in 2008, but continues his research and writing. His interests include music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing.

During that time I've compared his text with various of the other standard introductions to logic. None is better or more complete. Because it contains such a wide variety of material (from informal fallacies to categorical propositions and syllogisms, from propositional to predicate logic, from analogical reasoning to probability and statistical reasoning), it can be used in a variety of logic courses. I have used it in both critical thinking and symbolic logic courses. One good thing is that the text doesn't vary much from one edition to the next. The changes mostly involve improvements in formatting and clarifications of specific points. I began using this text with the Eighth Edition and this latest edition is still recognizably similar to that earlier one.Is Hurley's book perfect? No, it's not. But no text is. However, whatever flaws exist are few and far between. For those looking for a textbook to adopt for a course, I highly recommend this book.

Potential buyers should definitely get the tenth edition onward, or at least the ninth edition, otherwise, the book is quite different and the formatting, for one, is considerably poorer. Not only is the arrangement of the book aesthetically appealing and easy to work with, the formatting makes for easy learning. I did have an outstanding professor, when I took my logic course, but I definitely believe this book could be used without an instructor. About a year later, after having read the book, I used it again for preparation for a metalogic course, and it worked for me just as well as when I had the first time, with an instructor. The book covers pretty much everything I have seen covered in an undergraduate first-order logic course. The book begins with informal fallacies, works through a great deal of syllogistic and medieval logic, and moves on up to natural deduction, and so on. The book, I think, tries to adhere to a chronology of development of logic, as it was in history, but, where efficacious, Hurley has placed the most pertinent ideas together for maximized umph. The problems help the reader develop simpler skills first, before moving on to harder ones in that section. In this respect, the book is very well organized, each problem eliciting for one more new skill, once the previous one has been answered. At least half of the answers are in the back of the book, so, again, and instructor is not absolutely necessary. This book, also, does not take long to go through, which is a feat for a technical book of this kind. An adept, with some dedication, can make it through this book in a month’s time, I believe, and I feel that most students of average intelligence will be able to assimilate the vast majority of its content in four months’ time (i.e., a semester’s study).Recommended to all, and I think any high-schooler (or anyone familiar with the abstract concept of a “variable,” perhaps middle-schoolers) upward would find tremendous value in this text. If you choose to read one book on logic, I think this would be the one I recommend.

Usually the Princeton Review is top on my list for recommended books, but this one has so many errors and omissions, it is disgraceful. I might be able to be more sympathetic if this was the first edition, but it's the 4th! I contacted the publisher about the errors. I was told they had identified a few and was given a list. None of their discovered errors were in the math section, which is where I have discovered 13, so far. There are missing pages, explanations that don't match problems, and problems that include impossible scenarios, such as "AB is parallel to AB". Very, very disappointed with this book. "Cracking the ACT" and "5 Real ACTs" are far superior. Don't waste your money on this book.

By Happy shopper in TN My son who is about to go into his junior year has been studying and preparing though various ACT books considers this one of the best. Each time he practices, he improves his score. There are wonderful explanations with the answer key as to why the wrong aswere are the wrong choices. I would advise any parent who wants a high ACT and hopeful scholarship to have this as one of the books used to prepare. Practce the rright way does make closer to perfect---at least higher scores.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Really great, except for one minor thing By Amazon Customer It's a really great book for anyone who needs to prepare for his or her ACT. I would have rated this book 5 stars if it had not been for the typos in the book. One of the questions asks for one thing (i.e. measure of angle ABC, but instead in the answer key, it shows the measure of angle ACB). You get what I'm saying? Nonetheless, this book is a great one, and I would say it's a must have for anyone who's trying to score in the 30's.

What instructors and students are saying about the Success Series:

”We have used your products for students to help increase critical thinking skills, prepare for NCLEX and course exams, and for review of nursing content. We recommend students purchase the Success Series and review the content and questions for remediation and to enhance nursing knowledge. The terminology at the beginning of each chapter provide key terms for the students to review before answering questions. The books are all encompassing in regards to what students need to review across the curriculum. We love them!!”– Louise Outlaw, Instructor at Brown Mackie College, St.Louis

”The practice questions with explanations helped me understand how to answer test questions and think like a nurse.”– Allyse Edwards, Bryan College of Health Sciences, NE“I honestly feel that every incoming student nurse should have a copy of the Fundamentals Success book because it familiarizes students with what their fundamental tests will be like. Who wouldn't benefit from knowing what their test is going to look like? Being prepared with Fundamentals Success meant I hit the ground running. I aced my first test when most of my classmates were facing their first ever-academic failures. Nursing school is nothing like anything I have ever done before, memorizing text books will do little to prepare you to be a critical thinker. To succeed you must be able to apply the knowledge in multi-step process...the nursing process! The FA Davis books take you there and they do it quickly, because we nursing students needed to know it yesterday!”—Corrie Cyre, Hillsborough Community College Southshore, Student Nurses Association President

Fantastic For Studying For Med-Surg By Proper Bostonian *Note-This is the most current edition of this book (2015).This book wasn't required for nursing school, but it is so helpful! It breaks chapters into sections such as "safety," "psychological support," "nursing process," and "caring across life span" with fantastic practice questions. The questions have rationale at the end for each answer. It also includes some photos, scales, and diagrams. A few of my professors recommended the book to supplement my med-surg textbook for studying, and now I wouldn't do without it!When I do get ready to take the NCLEX, I'll have over 1,000 practice questions available online from an access code that comes with this book, which is a bonus!

By Nelson Gonzalez I give it five stars because the book has good questions and the rationals are very good. Unfortunately, the book did not work for me, the only class I was struggling with was Fundamentals. I did pass my class by reading the actual book from the class, but this one did not help me as per the class. I am sure that it would be awesome for the NCLEX. Like I said is not a bad book, has excellent questions, just not for the actual fundamental class, at least not in my opinion. Maybe it may work for others remember everyone studies different, for me fundamental was hard but I loved Pathophysiology. Keep in mind not everyone understand a subject in the same way. Other than that I do recommended because it has many practice questions.

Posing as a turncoat himself, he’s walking a fine line between honor and betrayal. A single misstep could result in disaster, and his mission is fraught with distractions: the pesky dragon, a pair of conniving courtiers, and the disillusioned damsel who’s certain Morgan can’t be trusted. If Morgan’s going to save the kingdom, win the girl, and manage to stay alive, he’ll need to step up his game. Because the traitor is lurking in the shadows, and his scheme calls not just for the betrayal of Kilbourne, but also the destruction of Morgan McRobbie.

Though I pride myself in reading across a wide range of genres, this one took me a bit farther afield of what I typically read. And how delighted I am that I ventured beyond my usual reading comfort zone to experience this well-told story with a witty heroine, a noble-yet-flawed hero, and a colorful set of secondary characters. And a dragon! Let's not forget the dragon!I suppose the thing I most loved about this book is its ability to bring together in a magical way so many aspects of fiction that I love: you get plenty of humor, suspense, and romance. It's clear from the beginning that you're in the hands of a master storyteller who weaves a tale that's unlike so many of the heavily marketed books on the market. I really tire of those. TRAITOR KNIGHT is like a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be swept away to a place and time where dragons fume, damsels toss out witty barbs, and heroes have plenty of foibles.

Keith has created several compelling characters, but his heroine really stands out. She is strong, funny, venerable and not cliched. Really, an outstandingly great character. Her foil, likewise, is top notch and the cast of supporting characters are rich in humor and drama. Keith’s style is light, clever and funny, but he also has a deft touch at creating and maintaining threads of suspense. There many scenes that come to a closure due to events in the plot that make you wish those scenes could have stretched out longer because they are that good. I highly recommend Traitor Knight and I look forward to seeing how Keith follows a few threads I detected as leading to the next book, and the dragon: I am looking forward to spending more time with the dragon.

He’s loyal, honest, smart, and brave. Despite all the good he does for Kilbourne, he has a horrible reputation. I must say that I was baffled by how the majority of people treated Morgan when it is clear to anyone who spends any length of time with him that he is completely devoted to his country and king. His situation is certainly an indication of the kind of damage rumors, even unfounded ones, can do to a reputation.Morgan had no idea the direction his life would take when he rescued Marissa from the dragon. Morgan and Marissa have good chemistry and would definitely make a good couple, but unfortunately the terrible rumors about Morgan hang like a black cloud over any possibility of romance. After Morgan rescues Marissa, she agrees to dine with him. Morgan’s true personality shines through wonderfully, so I was very disappointed when Marissa doubts her instincts and persists in believing the worst about him. Granted, some of Morgan’s actions are very suspicious, so I can understand Marissa’s confusion. Despite the rocky beginning of their relationship, their encounters never fail to be entertaining, and I have high hopes for their future.Just when Marissa is beginning to trust Morgan, he finds himself firmly on the wrong side of the law, and she is forced to take matters into her own hands. Her plan to reveal the true traitor is clever and well thought out, but will she be able to expose the true traitor in time to save Morgan?I truly enjoyed Traitor Knight. Morgan and Marissa are strong characters I had the pleasure of getting to know. I recommend Traitor Knight to anyone looking for a good fantasy with just a dash of romance.originally posted at long and short reviews

All ages will delight in the telling of tales esconced in recollections of the golden days of the 1950's and 1960's, brought to life in a modern day mystery interwoven with romance, nostalgia, and a sense of place long gone but still living in memories shared.

Pedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood: Sharing Children's Learning and Teachers' Thinking, by Susan Stacey

Review “Stacey reminds us that the value of documentation goes beyond an attractive display on the wall. She says, ‘Documentation at its best leads to reflection and dialogue.’ This book goes on to offer a number of valuable and practical examples of how to focus the work of pedagogical documentation. If we are to put the idea of teacher research into real life, pedagogical documentation is a cornerstone. Stacey’s very practical book brings the practice to life.”—Margie Carter, co-author of Designs of Living and Learning“Susan Stacey’s new book takes the reader on a journey of the transformational possibilities of pedagogical documentation. Susan interweaves the theory and practice beautifully and the photographs of the projects and documentation give readers real-life examples to inspire their journey. It takes time, but Pedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood is an excellent first stop on your journey of transformation.”—Dr. Diane Kashin, RECE, Professor, Ryerson University"How do we know if they're learning? How do we know if we're teaching? By documenting what happens and reflecting on it together. What's documentation? It's saving and sharing our stories to create mutual learning experiences for teachers and children and parents - in the author's words,"bringing families and other interested readers into the complex circle of thinking that is teaching." And the children join the construction team as they think further about their experience in response to genuine questions.Want to learn how it's done? Open this book and begin your discovery of everything you ever wanted to know about authentic assessment."—Elizabeth Jones Faculty emerita, Pacific Oaks College, Author, Emergent Curriculum; The Play's the Thing"Three cheers to Susan for writing this book! Its timing is perfect – teachers are more ready than ever to use pedagogical documentation effectively to make children’s thinking and work visible. Susan offers exciting, practical suggestions for using familiar and new technological tools to create documentation that communicates with families and children.Susan reminds us that documentation is more useful than as a display of interesting events in a classroom. With pedagogical documentation a teacher pays close attention to children’s thinking during the process of inquiry into a topic. A teacher listens and responds as children question, explore, interact, pose theories, and investigate.Susan shows us how documentation is an act of reciprocity wherein a teacher offers her response to children’s work through photos, narration, and speculation. Documentation is collaboration—when shared with a child it too becomes an object of study. Documentation is pedagogical practice that helps teachers reach beyond their certainties to consider what may be possible. We are sensitized to what is our edge and are helped to vision what may be.Pedagogical documentation honors and respects children’s thinking and capacities."—Gretchen Reynolds, Early Childhood Education, Algonquin CollegePedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood defines the process of pedagogical documentation and asks what a classroom experience says about a child’s ideas and learning process, providing keys to creating the kinds of documentation that help foster and explain children’s explorations. References and research blends with an overview that teaches how documentation is applied, analyzed, and how it contributes to both a child’s experience and family and educator discussions. Photos and diagrams accompany text instructions to provide specific insights on such documentation, offering early childhood educators all the tools to put such documentation into play and make it work for everyone, making for a top pick for any early childhood reference library.—California Bookwatch, The Education Shelf: September 2015
