About the Author Janet R. Matthews, Ph.D., ABPP received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Mississippi following an internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Her postdoctoral fellowship in clinical and neuropsychological assessment was at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is a licensed and board certified psychologist and Professor Emerita at Loyola University New Orleans where she taught an undergraduate practicum course for 30 years.

>b>C. (Clarence) Eugene Walker received his PhD in 1965 from Purdue University with a major in clinical psychology and minors in experimental psychology and sociology. His psychology internship was completed at West Tenth Street Veteran s Administration Hospital and Riley Children s Hospital, both in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Walker taught at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California from 1964 to 1968, where he was an assistant professor and chair of the Division of Psychology, Education, and Physical Education and Athletic Director. From 1968 to 1974 he was an assistant, then an associate professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. From 1974 to 1995 he was at the University of Oklahoma Medical School in Oklahoma City where he became Director of Training in Pediatric Psychology and co-chief of mental health services for Children s Hospital of Oklahoma. On retirement, Dr. Walker was named professor emeritus at the medical school and began teaching on the Arts and Sciences campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Dr. Walker has published over 100 articles reviews, and chapters and more than 20 books on research and clinical practice with children and adults.

I has heard about the elitism and having Deaf teachers I sensed the discrimination between CODAs vs having Deaf parents. I did think this would be more like a personal narrative writing style but it was more of a collection of evidence of how poorly the author was treated; repetitive at times. His message may be better received if he was less bitter but being on the defense is a horrible place to be. The distain is palpable. I have been in a similar situation and feeling helpless is a lonely suffering state of being. I would like to have an epilogue. Maybe the author would consider working at Ohlone College in Fremont. I also heard that Sacramento, Northridge and Riverside have Deaf Studies programs. Those cities would also provide access for his wife (and him) to find a Deaf community.

Dr. Gauer was a must for me to take any courses under him because I learned a lot from him compared with all other business instructors/professors during those times. Dr. Gauer is one of my favorite business professors during my study at Gallaudet. I was baffled why he left Gallaudet during my senior as I was scheduled to take few courses under him. I thought he went to a different university for a better pay and I moved on. I found this book through a vlogger and I immediately brought this book because I wanted to learn why Dr. Gauer had left Gallaudet during my senior at Gallaudet. This book is an eye-opener for me to learn how Gallaudet have treated Dr. Gauer to this day.I strongly encourage you all to read this book before you take Gallaudet into the consideration to study there or to be employed with.I hope Dr. Gauer could well very soon again.Eric

Chase I have homeschooled for 13 years, and have come to question if I was requiring too much or not enough from my kids. I love mastery, am a curriculum lover, and have two very different learners. These are just three (of the many) reasons I am struggling with balance. Lee's book brought clear definition to some specific issues, questions, and doubts I was having. I was given wise direction for getting thing in better balance - laced with lots grace & understanding (no judgment or condescension). Thank you, Lee, for more excellent mentoring!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Never too late to create balance By Amaran Mrs. Binz has written yet another very practical, very readable, very applicable book here. I have three teaching degrees (2 BS, 1 MA) plus many years of public and private school teaching experience, but when it came to homeschooling, I was rather overwhelmed. I could easily manage a class of 30+ kids more or less the same age, in select subjects that I was told to teach, with the provided curriculum, within a rigid time frame. Being given a lump of clay with which to do whatever I wanted/whenever I wanted left me bewildered at all the choices! So we muddled through, doing a pretty much ok job, I think. Both of our daughters excel in some areas, average in some, and are a bit slower in others. (Fairly normal.) But now that I have an entering high schooler, I am even more confused by the choices than ever before. I have spent literally hours and hours this spring wading through curricula descriptions, college entrance requirements articles, scholarship how-tos, and so on.But nothing has helped me as much as Lee Binz has. I have devoured many of Mrs. Binz's books this winter and spring, and I am SO THANKFUL! Looking back over the past 9 years of homeschooling, I wish I had read many of her books at the beginning of our journey. In particular, Creating Homeschool Balance would have helped me. From the very first chapter, paragraph after paragraph contains practical advice.Concrete examples:1. I really wish I would have understood to put my weakest subject first, both in curriculum dollars spent and in priority of teaching. for me, it was math. We tried three different curriculum first, because I was trying to save money. Finally, after a couple of years of tears, anger, and a lot of frustration, we invested in a more expensive curriculum that has been a great blessing. After making the financial investment, I began making it the first subject of the day, which also has made a great difference.2. Mrs. Binz discusses the difference between "perfectionism" and "mastery." I found that discussion very helpful, as both my daughter and I struggle with perfectionism.3. Her discussions about seasonal stressors and the "tyranny of the urgent" were very helpful. Even though I had plenty of public and private school experience with not finishing the curriculum by the end of May, for some reason, I thought with homeschooling there would be no excuse for not finishing. Looking back, we've had so many reasons to be thankful for the flexibility of homeschooling (special needs child, caring for elderly parents, etc.), but I still struggled with the rigidity of the yearly calendar and how to keep schooling (read: get a certain number of pages finished) when faced with curve balls.Overall, I highly recommend Mrs. Binz's books. I wish I had read many of them before I started homeschooling, but it's not too late for me to learn from her now.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Balance is key to prevent burnout By Gina Gyetvai I am guilty of not balancing my homeschool, resulting in burnout. This little read helped me realize my struggles with overcompensating a child in a weak area, over scheduling due to "grandiose thinking", and the guilt of not finishing every problem and every lesson in a book. Finding margin in my homeschool day and understanding that 6-8 hours is the "absolute most" I would need to provided an excellent education for my children has inspired me to schedule more effectiviely for the next school year. Thank you, Lee Binz, for sharing your knowledge and empowering me with fresh ideas for the new school year.
