If anyone can show you how to use T.P.R.S. for Chinese, it's Terry Waltz By Chris Stolz Terry Waltz has taught Mandarin using comprehensible input for fifteen years. A PhD, international presenter, linguist, teacher, and professional translator, Waltz knows as much about comprehensible input as anyone alive. If you teach Chinese, you want to up your pedagogical game, and you want your students to learn with ease, this is where you start.

For All Language Teachers Who Want Their Students to Actually Become Fluent and Literate By Contee Seely This is a superb book about how to teach so that students will indeed become, as the subtitle says, "fluent and literate through comprehensible input." It is loaded with down-to-earth practical advice for any language teacher who wants her/his students to actually develop true proficiency.I especially recommend it to all teachers who don't consider themselves advanced in TPRS or comprehensible input. However, even the most experienced TPRS and CI teachers are likely to learn something from Dr. Waltz's descriptions of her experiences. It may be an exaggeration, but there is much truth in legendary baseball manager Earl Weaver's opinion that "it's what you learn after you know everything that counts."Teachers of Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Korean, Russian and other languages that do not use the Latin alphabet will get extra benefit from the sections on teaching reading and writing. Teachers of other tonal languages will profit from Waltz's practical approach to teaching tones.

I wanted to read this book because the author has a lot of experience using TPRS to help students acquire Mandarin. Her explanations are clear and her tone is positive, practical and inspiring. If you are currently teaching Mandarin using a grammar-based method, I encourage you to readthis book and consider trying TPRS and the practices outlined in this book.

Lajos In this thoughtfully- conceived publication, Alessio, LaMantia, and Vinci, all librarians at the Schaumburg Township District Library in Schaumburg, Illinois, offer a year’s worth of customized and focused library programming for “millennials” and individuals in their early 40s. Taking an age- expansive approach to people comprising the “millennial” generation—this group is typically comprised of men and women who were born in the 1980s, 1990s, and the early 2000s-- the authors briefly introduce these library patrons in terms of their age cohorts, lifestyles, interests, and the ways in which libraries better can serve their needs. In the twelve following chapters, one for each month of the year, they then present an average of four, start-to-finish, sometimes month- specific, library programs for millennials and others. Each program guide sets forth pertinent information pertaining to organizing, coordinating, and effecting the program, not limited to preparation time, length of the program, size and age range of the targeted audience, a shopping list, setup guidelines, “make it happen” tips, program variations, and promotional ideas. The authors include many programs that have proven to be very popular and fun such as old school gaming, Oscar night, March Madness, Realistic Summer Reading and Media Programs for Adults, Literary Speed Dating, Shark Week Celebration, and writing workshops. The 13th chapter describes ten, quarterly or monthly, library clubs with ideas for sessions, crossover programs, variations, and more. While unfortunately this handbook omits the very important budgetary costs for each program, overall it will serve as a useful, go-to, how- to guide for many public librarians, who may be responsible for adult library programming. Written by experienced public librarians, it is very highly recommended for many public and some academic library book collections--C. A. Lajos, The Librarian's Review of Books

Review “The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” —Alfred North Whitehead

Review "[Griffith's] aim was to traslate the Greek text as if it were a conversation, and he has succeeded admirably." Library Journal"In addition to a vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato's text, the student and general reader will find many aids to comprehension in this volume: an introduction that assesses the cultural background to the Republic, its place within political philosophy, and its general argument; succinct notes in the body of the text; an analytical summary of the work's content; a full glossary of proper names; a chronology of important events; and a guide to further reading. The result is an accomplished and accessible edition of this seminal work, suitable for philosophers and classicists as well as historians of political thought at all levels." While Plato addresses metaphysical issues, he does so with language and analogies that most people can grasp with studious reading. But Plato talks about much more than metaphysics. Marriage, music, war, kings, procreation and more are all topics of discussion for Plato's dialog. In addition to the teachings about life, this book also offers a great introduction to philosophy. The famous "cave story" illustrates not only the purpose of philosophy, but also the inherent difficulties. While this book is absolutely necessary for students of philosophy and religion, I think there are golden truths for all people no matter what they do.So, why this particular translation of the work? This translation offers the best ease in reading while mainting a tight grasp of the original Greek meanings of Plato's text. Besides, it isn't that expensive. This book is clearly a timeless classic, and if you can't read classical Greek, this translation is probably the best you will get.

Most people (I would guess nine out of ten) who have read this colussus of classical philosophy, read it because they were forced to by their college instructors. This is unfortunate because "The Republic" is a compelling and enduring philosophy of how life should be lived, how justice should be approached, and how leaders should lead. What recommends this book, really, is the bargain price: under five bucks. As one of those college instructors who makes their students read this, I always recommend this edition. Sterling and Scott's translation is as good as anyone else's, so why not save my students a few bucks? And, if you're one of those one out of ten who is considering reading this on your own, you've only got five bucks to lose, but an awful lot of rewarding reading to gain!Rocco DormarunnoCollege of New Rochelle

Gilmour I've been using the Oxford World's Classics edition of Republic for three years now to teach freshmen, and Waterfield's translation and endnotes are great. His choice to render dikaiosyne as "morality" rather than "justice" allows a range of discussion with American students that travels outside the courtroom and into the purpose of life and what translation means, and his crankiness in the endnotes (he talks about Plato as an old lover talks about his beloved) allows some great lessons about editorial practices and what's involved in the production of a scholarly edition.Perhaps more important to my students than anything, this edition of Plato is right at ten bucks, a steal compared to their other textbooks and an invitation to mark up, use, and abuse the margins. I'm sitting at my desk, my battered copy of the 1998 printing sitting next to my keyboard, and I'm thinking that perhaps this fall I'll pick up a copy of this blue-sky beauty.

Who has no secrets? Things that happen to us loom as large as things we have done. Each leaves its mark. The life of Jacob and Elizabeth’s only child bears the mark of a secret from the past, woven into events before her birth, affecting her childhood and adolescence. A tragic parallel of her own could mark her entire adult life. Her journey has painful consequences and she is forced to choose between a life of hatred and the harder path of forgiveness. In a quiet, rural Ohio community, Anna Mae Moyer is born and raised in a traditional Mennonite family. Spanning the decades after World War II, Anna’s story is one of her growing sense of uniqueness and quest for answers. Where did her musical giftedness come from considering her community’s tendency toward more humble and conservative expression? What do the “hobo markings” on Papa’s fence and barn mean? Has a ’57 Chevy left “hobo marks” on her life? Can the bonds of things forgotten find future release through remembrance? Whatever will become of her? Family, friends, an entire community are an important part of life and Anna is no exception. The suspense interwoven with historic events enlivens the exploration of human frailty blending with Divine intention on the canvass of a life. “Marked in Secret” is a tender story of a young life growing up amidst a tumultuous age of war, segregation, and a quickly changing country. Anna’s journey is in many ways our journey; a life spent striving for self-discovery, validation, and purpose.

I've been waiting for its completion. I read the book over 2 1/2 days. I simply could not put it down. It moved me to so many different emotions! I felt compassion and pain, anger at injustice and my heart loved the three sisters who were always there. Don't we all need someone who stands by our side, regardless of how different we may be? Cindy, you wrote a beautiful, tender story. I'd love to read more about Anna! ;)

Movement-play, put simply, is encouraging physical activity in a child-led manner for the benefit of children's health, learning and wellbeing. This book looks at the theory behind the importance of movement and:

  • how movement play links with all the areas of early childhood development
  • physical activity guidelines for young children
  • practical advice and photos to support implementation in settings
  • how to assess your own setting
  • how to best work with parents on this topic
  • comprehensive guidance on writing a physical development policy

The early years is one of the critical periods in the establishment of physical behaviours and physical development is also one of the prime areas of the EYFS as well as other, global, curricula.  A must-read for students on Early Childhood and Early Years courses and Early Years practitioners to improve their practice and understanding of psychical development for the benefit of young children.

Review

If you are interested in how to create more enriching, playful, movement experiences with young children, this book will show you how! The book is a must for all those interested in promoting physical development in the early years, it is practical but underpinned by helpful theory including the links between physicality and later academic success. The authors are able to draw on their vast collective experiences and provide an evidence-based resource that I would highly recommend to all early childhood educators; including those in early primary schools.

(Professor Anthony D. Okely)

This book is going to be very influential and will be a seminal text for all practitioners and students wanting to hone their knowledge about how children think and learn best. The authors are Iram Siraj, an academic of giant stature in the field of Early Childhood having been involved over the years in many influential research projects, and Carol Archer whose work as a hands- on practitioner, advisory teacher and academic brings the ‘street cred’ to this book that practitioners relate to.  The importance of physical play and movement has been grossly underemphasised in the training of early years practitioners but this resource will undoubtedly redress the balance and lend academic rigour and authority to the place of movement in the curriculum for young children and what we offer babies and toddlers. It will give the reader an extremely helpful overview as it stresses the importance of movement play as the common denominator of all learning. Always backed up by convincing research evidence the first chapter explains in depth what is going on in the brain and the body when children move.

Vigorous movement is essential for health.  Being overweight or obese in childhood is a predictor of later health troubles in adult life and yet in the case studies undertaken for this book, adults in pre-school settings were shown to be reluctant to plan for, engage or intervene in movement and physical play with the children. They were unaware of the Department of Health guidelines that children should have 180 minutes (3 hours ) of physical activity in the day and that all under 5s should minimize the amount of time spent being sedentary (being restrained in car seats or buggies or in sitting) for extended periods . Play is synonymous with movement and a play-based environment offers children what they need to grow and learn best. There is an emphasis on the importance of the outdoors throughout the book.

But knowing the theory is one thing, implementing it is quite another. The book is practical too. It is excellent in guiding practitioners and especially managers and leaders on how to implement a curriculum based on movement for children from birth to 6 years of age. These practical guidelines are clearly illustrated with helpful photos. Siraj and Archer have also devised a Movement Play Scale (MPS) as a way of assessing the quality of movement –play. The descriptors help to place the setting as inadequate through to excellent.

The last chapter is incredibly full and concentrated! It contains step-by-step support in devising a physical development policy where all concerned are given a voice including parents.

The references run to many pages and cover literature from national and international research, and experts in the field of early childhood, education, pedagogy, health, neuroscience, physiology, biological science, psychology, sociology and medicine.

I found this book extremely helpful and will use it in my work with teachers and practitioners and recommend it to all involved in the care and education of young children and their teachers and carers.

It includes information about the enormous importance of physically exploratory and challenging play for early years children and presents a lot of interesting and helpful information in a way that is open and clear. I now understand how trusting partnerships between early years settings, parents, professionals and grandparents and others involved with caring for young children enable children to develop their physical skills, and how essential these skills are for their integration and future learning.I highly recommend this book, it is not only clear and well written, but also reminds the reader of the diversity of family life and how all can be part of a process of further learning and thinking together that does not judge and is genuinely inclusive.
