He was a powerful influencing reference as Britain's Bernard Lewis, who would become the foremost authority on Islamic history and traditions, traced the origins of the 'Assassin sect' in the Shi'ite branch of Islam and began to chronicle both their doctrines and the life of their enigmatic founder, the legendary "Old Man of the Mountain." The Assassins were the first group to make planned, systematic, and long-term use of murder as a political weapon, and their ideals and methods have since found many imitators. Bernard Lewis was just about to publish, in 1967, one of his first books entitled the "The Assassins." Once published it was to be the most comprehensive, readable, and authoritative account of history's first terrorists. When Lewis' book was published Dr. Ahmed Abdulla did take some exceptions on one major historical account but in all he was very pleased with the historical context of Lewis' factual history. Where they differed would continue to be preserved and concealed, unknowingly, in Lewis' account as one of the most guarded secrets in the history of the assassin's legacy. Ahmed and Iran's self-imposed exiled Ayatollah Khomeini, allegedly, were two of the very few Shi'ites in the world that knew about this well guarded secret. As descendants of the "Old Man" each was entrusted with continuing to pass the legacy down through history until the call would come to carryout the assassination. However, it was the one called Ahmed didn't want to get because it was diametrically in opposition to his principles of democracy, tolerance and religion.

Good story, keep it simple By Henry Arce I found a segment in the book about a number of middle eastern young athletes traveling to the USA, to be unconnected to the story...secondly, there were a number of verb tense agreement faults which while not to difficult to decider, were a nuisance to encounter...was this a lack of good copy editing, or a problem caused by the printer??? The ultimate story nonetheless was well developed and could've been even more enjoyable but for the issues I referenced above!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Who is the May Queen Killer? By Thurston Wilfred Hildebrand, III After some relatively calm waltzing around the English and Welsh border, the reader’s illusion is shattered by an unexpected and dark, grisly finale. It’s easy enough to read along and wonder if this really counts as a psychological thriller or maybe it’s more like a cozy mystery but the reveal does happen, and when it does, it vaporizes everything you thought you knew. Wow! The story develops with a teasing, subtle invitation to match wits against the author’s— is there a clue whodunit, a slip of the tongue, a characterization that might give it all away? It’s impossible not to play the game, and one can’t help but read more closely and hunt for hints before they’re fairly given.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A mytery that keeps you guessing. By Ldub This is one of the most twisting, turning mystery stories I have ever read. This book is both a murder mystery and a thriller and is satisfying as both. At several points during the story I was absolutely convinced I knew who the killer(s) were and every time I was wrong. The author is utterly brilliant about leading the reader down the garden path and leaving them to jump their own; and in my case wrong, conclusions. The book starts in current day and then through the well placed use of flashbacks and ongoing plot moves the story along. Sapphire, is to be May Queen in her tiny English village. Jock is a nervous, mystery writer, who is avoiding his past; he is our guide to the history and current events of the story. When Sapphire leaps from the May Queen Float and takes off in a run. Jock tries to follow but loses her. When she doesn't return the story of the May Queen Killers is teased out. There are very few books where I am truly gobsmacked at the end, this in one succeeds as two separate things are revealed that are just brilliant. After I finished I was still trying to determine how I had been so successfully mislead.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great tension and pacing By Becky Lawson This is really more of a 3.5 as opposed to a 3. Because of everything she did right, this book gets a 4.Pros1) Great Character Development (for the most part. More later on that.)2 ) Fantastic pacing; some really gripping scenes3) Good job with the flashbacks -- added tension to the story and explanation to behaviorsCons1) Details, like the Rottweiler sent to attack, and it paws the air. Attacking dogs attack, they don't paw the air. But, I saw later why she'd done it; it was necessary to the story, though. I wish she'd found a different way to leave something in the elevator.2) The killer and motives weren't well enough developed. The red herrings were all too obvious, so were easily ruled out as the killer.3) To avoid a spoiler, I can't give details. When the last May Queen is taken, the details after her capture seem completely opposite to how others might act around her. You find out later why, but you have to stick with it to find out. Hints are given, but I didn't realize that's what was going on, and a few passages I thought the writer was just being stupid. Once you get to the end, it all makes sense.Overall, this was a very good read, and I would recommend it to those who like suspense. It did have a lot of British jargon, which I loved. Being an American, it's nice to get a touch of the authentic. There were at couple of loose ends that I would like to have had tied up. Why did the fellow get kicked off the police force? Why was he deliberately drinking himself to death? Unrequited love was mentioned in passing, but that was all. This lent itself nicely to him maybe being the killer, but was never explained.Another loose end was the budding romance that was left hanging. It would seem from the beginning of the book that this would be important, but it got no time at the end.I read "Fry", which led me to this book. Fry was a more solid book, and it's one that I would reread. This one, however, maybe, maybe not. It was an easy read, and I might go back to see what clues I may have missed. Depends on what other books I have backed up waiting for attention.I will continue to watch for more novels by this author, because for the most part they are well plotted and really good reads.

Review 'An absorbing novel about life and love at the time of the Great War. The characters are all wonderfully written, with great depth and shades of light and dark... The story plays out beautifully and the book was quite impossible to put down.' The Bookbag. 'A sensitive and poignant love story with twists, turns and a pervading sense of sadness and an overwhelming sense of inevitability reminiscent of the great Mazo de la Roche as she explores the same theme as in that author's WAKEFIELD'S COURSE. Beautiful writing, a lovely read...' Books Monthly 'With richly realised characters that jump off the pages, an engrossing narrative that grabs your attention from the very first page and two powerful love stories that will touch your heart and have you reaching for the tissues, the fantastic Catherine Law has penned an outstanding family saga that you will not easily forget'. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Vivid, stirring and emotional By Julie The Flower Book is Catherine Law’s latest wartime tale of family secrets, illicit passions and forbidden love.Violet Prideaux has always been perplexed by her family’s connection to the local squire Weston Penruth. Although socially they might be poles apart, Weston had no qualms in paying Violet’s school fees and enabling her to go to an exclusive boarding school for girls that has opened many doors for her. Violet might be grateful for Weston’s generosity, but she has never been able to shake off this powerful feeling that her benefactor’s agreeable character and eccentric personality belie a dangerous man with something significant to hide. As the years go by, Violet finds herself reaching marriageable age and when Weston proposes to her, she finds herself with no other option but to accept his proposal of marriage. Although her parents are absolutely delighted with the match, Violet is immediately made to feel like an interloper by Weston’s mother, who cannot believe that her eligible son is marrying a mere doctor’s daughter. However, when a tragic incident reveals Weston’s true colours, Violet realises that she must flee the Cornish village she’s called home all her life or else risk losing everything which she holds dear to her heart…Escaping to London to stay with her beloved aunt, Violet is determined never to go home to Cornwall ever again. Although she misses them dreadfully, her parents soon make it perfectly clear that they will never forgive her for breaking off her engagement to Weston, but her shattered heart is immediately restored by an unexpected encounter with handsome painter Jack Fairling. A passionate affair quickly ensues, but with the gathering clouds of war threatening to destroy their happiness, will Violet and Jack ever have their happy ending? Or is their love destined to be a snatched moment in time?In 1936, Violet’s daughter, Aster, is now twenty-one years old and living an idyllic life in Cornwall.
