70AD. Disgraced, dishonoured and banished into exile on pain of execution if he ever returns to Rome, the former military tribune Gaius Valerius Verrens makes his way East through the death and destruction of the savage Judaean rebellion. Valerius knows his only hope of long term survival and a restoration of his family’s fortunes lie with his friend Titus, commander of the Army of Judaea and son of the newly crowned Emperor Vespasian. But when he reaches the ring of legionary camps around the seemingly impregnable city of Jerusalem he finds Titus a changed man. Gone is the cheerful young officer he knew, replaced by a tough, ruthless soldier under pressure from his father to end the insurrection at any cost. Soon, Valerius finds himself at the centre of a web of intrigue spun by Titus’s lover, Queen Berenice of Cilicia, and her sometime ally, the general’s turncoat adviser, Flavius Josephus, who have an ulterior motive for ending the siege quickly.Yet the laurels that will regain his honour cannot be won in the negotiations in the murky tunnels beneath Jerusalem. Only amid the fire and blood of battle will he equal the glory that brought him the title Hero of Rome.

By Michael Yoder Douglas Jackson does it again with this the sixth book in the Gaius Valerius Verrens series. Everyone will have their favorites in this series but this book will be one of mine. Will Gaius redeem his honor? Will Serpentius come back? And the descriptions of Josephus and Titus and the siege and destruction of Jerusalem will keep you glued to the book. I can only hope that the next book with our hero will be soon on the horizon. Thank you, Mr. Jackson for an entertaining time.

This one, with two main storylines, finds Valerius exiled from Rome. In order to regain his honor and fortune and to redeem himself, he travels to Syria and points east [in the first part] and joins his friend Titus, son of Vespasian, the recently-acclaimed emperor, in Jerusalem, to lend his strong arm and brains to Titus to help subdue that city [in the second part]. Serpentius, his ex-gladiator bodyguard and friend, although now suffering seizures after a terrible blow to the head, still fights as well as ever and accompanies Valerius. The Judaeans refuse to surrender and a violent siege ensues. Titus is resolute in pursuing his goals--to capture the city, to reduce it to rubble and to bring the treasures of the Temple to his father. On the rebound from losing Lady Domitia, Valerius easily falls for Tabitha, lady-in-waiting to Queen Berenice of Cilicia, Titus's paramour. An important character in the story, Tabitha is an agent of the queen, has misrepresented herself until Emesa, then to me [and to Serpentius] she seems like a devious, manipulative, sly, femme fatale. I hope if she becomes a running character, both Serpentius and I will be proven wrong. Once in Jerusalem, we meet Josephus, the turncoat Jewish general, now Titus's advisor and interpreter. I don't think Mr. Jackson was exaggerating the man's venal, opportunistic personality; Josephus was one character I "loved to hate." In the midst of the violent siege, both Tabitha, for her queen, and Josephus, probably for himself, try to carry out the same secretive agenda. Two warring fanatical factions of Jews against the Romans and against each other ambush and skirmish Valerius or the legions; this complicates capture of the city. The characterization was more and more subtle and nuanced. Well written and polished, pacing was very good. I liked how the author took elements I've read in books by others, but combined them in new, fresh ways. In Dimitrios, the armorer, I could see shades of James Bond's Q. Of course, the city of Emesa wouldn't be the same without its Elah Gabel. I was surprised to find Valerius reading Aineas of Stymphalia on sieges, to get some tips. A few months ago, I read a book review of his extant work. Soon after I read and really enjoyed the novel The End of Sparta in which Aineas is a major character. I didn't like that physical intimacy between Valerius and Tabitha first took place about 25% into the novel and that **she** initiated it. [I'm probably old-fashioned.] I do like the fact that whenever it did take place, the author "shut the bedroom door" as it were, gave sketchy details and left the rest up to one's imagination. The trek east I liked best, especially the soldiers making their way through the swamp.I think the editor missed this: on page 92: When Valerius is modeling the magnificent armor Dimitrios has made for him, Tabitha says, "You could be Titus or his OLDER [my capitalization], much more dangerous brother." I believe Domitian was at least a decade YOUNGER.One can read the novel as a standalone. The author has placed the narration of past events in the text so cleverly that I believe it would tease someone into reading the previous volumes if they had never read them before. Most highly recommended.

This is my favorite book yet in Mr Jackson's Rome series By Amazon Customer This is my favorite book yet in Mr Jackson's Rome series, which is saying something! I don't understand why his books, whether writing as Douglas Jackson or James Douglas, are so hard to find in the US. His characters are likeable and believable and his plot lines fully credible and eminently plausible. Already eager for the next.

The Work-Smart Academic Planner: Write It Down, Get It Done, by Peg Dawson EdD, Richard Guare PhD

Review "This is a wonderful tool. Importantly, it provides a menu of options for coaches and students and the language is transparent and logical. Dawson and Guare draw on their knowledge of how executive skills develop and are refined to explicitly teach strategies for academic and personal self-management and self-advocacy. Both the student and the executive skills coach will gain from using this planner."--Jackie Gilson, NCSP, school psychologist, Chicago Public Schools "In my 17 years as a teacher, I've worked with countless frustrated, struggling students who are clearly capable of doing better. The executive functioning and coaching components in The Work-Smart Academic Planner are vital to improve the academic performance of these learners. The planner helps students develop a growth mindset and increase their sense of self-efficacy. It builds the cognitive skills necessary for success in school and beyond."--Timothy McElroy, MA, special education teacher, Mountain View High School, Fairfax County (Virginia) Public Schools "Dawson and Guare provide a true compass for navigating the path to academic growth. The planner provides invaluable practical strategies that encourage students' independence and foster learning. It will be a welcome resource for students, coaches, educators, and parents."--Barbara Saint-Amour, board-certified coach, Yarmouth, Maine "While it is valuable to develop theoretical models of executive functioning, it is incredibly more so to develop practical strategies and clinical tools for overcoming problems in this area. Congratulations to Dawson and Guare for doing just that. This planner provides a set of tools that will help teens with executive skills deficits--including those with ADHD--to function more effectively. Parents and teachers will find the book highly useful, and clinicians will want to add it to the list of resources they recommend for dealing with executive skills deficits on a daily basis."--Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, ABCN, Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina"This planner will be extremely useful for a wide variety of students, from those struggling with school performance to high achievers seeking further growth. It incorporates research-based strategies that will help students manage and plan their time, organize school assignments and responsibilities, and remain focused on short- and long-term goals. I know of no other resource that not only provides an individual guide for executive skill development but also includes many helpful checklists, tip sheets, and templates to support the successful completion of essential school tasks."--George J. DuPaul, PhD, School Psychology Program, Lehigh University

I have a 16 year old son who has severe executive function skill deficits. He looked at it and said it was good inside but he didn't want to carry it because it had an embarrassing cover design. Another drawback in his opinion was the large page format. He wanted the book itself to have smaller sized pages to look more like a typical school planner. He said he'd rather write smaller and have smaller pages. I'm going to have to make a school specific design and laminate it to the front and back covers in order for my son to want to take it to school. I'll gladly do this if my son will use this tool, but it is an issue that could be resolves with more creative design.

Hopp I'm an Executive Function/ADHD coach and I have been highly recommending this planner to the parents of the children I coach. This planner really asks al the important questions that children with EF challenges often forget. I have read some of the concerns about the cover from parents, but I have recommended that my families buy some decorative duck tape and have the kids decorate the covers. These tape patterns even work for older children.

A serious need finally satisfied By JM I am an ADHD coach and purchased this planner for my 7th grade grandson and to use with my clients in my practice. My grandson's school and many others sell what is very loosely referred to as a planner (actually pages to record daily assignments) for about $5.00. In my opinion they are worthless. Last year I looked for a student planner at Office Max that would meet the needs of a young student just learning to record and plan long term assignments. I found something that I made due for $17.00. I highly recommend this planner not only for a young student with ADHD but for all youth just learning how to plan their academic and personal lives. With the recommended instruction (clearly explained in the planner) and reinforcement, this planner is an excellent and very valuable introduction to effective planning habits for all young students. Academic planning is a skill that is overlooked in upper elementary and middle school, which I think is a gross disservice to students. As with any undertaking, planning is the most important and critical first step. Thanks to the authors who efficiently satisfied a huge need.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Man Who Knew Too Much By Virtual Pulp True to Levinson form, Operation Perfidia is a really fast read and hard to put down. He is a master storyteller and the first two thirds of the novel just crackles along. Last year I read two novels of cold war intrigue--Ken Follett's Code to Zero and Ian Fleming's Moonraker. There are many similarities between this story and Follett's, but to me this was the most enjoyable of the three books and I attribute this to the main character, David Brockman. The CIA field agent is tough, smart, and good at his job. His Achilles' heel is the mile-wide blind spot he has for the woman he loves. This book supports the most popular spin on the facts and rumors surrounding the mystery of the JFK snuff--the "vast right-wing conspiracy" theory. It is fairly obvious just from reading the blurb that the culprits will turn out to be anti-Castro Cubans. Of course anti-Kennedy CIA good ol' boys collaborate. Nothing new here, but then this book was originally published in 1975, 16 years before the Oliver Stone film would make this hypothesis a household assumption. But it does leave room for improvement...The most disappointing aspect of the book was in the climax and ending. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but I read the last words wishing there was more to it.P.S: I've been in contact with Len and found out the editors did some unfortunate hacking on his manuscript, including an ending that would have fit this novel much better.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. cute but short book By Michelle@Book Briefs Midnight Run is the first book in the new adult series, called Once Upon A Desire. Midnight Run is a clean new adult book, and it is a quick, light and cute read. Perfect for when you want to zone out for a couple of hours and read a one sitting book that will make you smile. Especially if you like your romance a little on the cheesy side, this is a great one for you. And the second book in the Once Upon a Desire series just came out this week, so you can get your next fix asap.Midnight Run is the story of Kingston and Nora. They each join a midnight running club, and because it is dark out Kingston doesn’t realize that Nora is the barista that he has a crush on. A little crazy when you think about it, but it was totally cute for the story.Midnight Run was a little short for my liking, but it was full of great characters. I really enjoyed Nora’s roommate and Kingston was adorable. There were also a few characters that I loved to hate as well. I know most people probably hate Laurel the most, and while I do wish we got to the bottom of why she was the way she was, she wasn’t my least favorite. I couldn’t stand Nora’s boss. I would think that he would have a better idea of who his employees were. It just really bugged me how he reacted a few times in the story.I loved the idea of the midnight run club, and if I wasn’t such a chicken, I would totally join a group like that in my city. I can’t wait for Amy’s story, which is next up in the Once Upon A Desire Series. These books are good for when you are looking for a long novella length story for a quick romance fix.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not compensated for my review.

You will instantly fall in love with the characters and you will see the true colors of other characters. She first meets Kingston at the coffee shop when she starts to fall, he catches her. She thinks that he has a girlfriend and admire him from a far. Kingston is from Texas and has moved to NYC with his job. He runs into a beautiful barista but never has the nerve to ask for her name or a date. He loves to run and has joined a Midnight Runners Club. He meets a new girl, that reminds him of the barista but thinks it not the same person. When life throws Nora a curve ball, Kingston finally puts it together that the runner and barista is the same girl. The third book of the Butler Family Chronicles, Revolutionary Privateers, continues the saga of this entrepreneurial family. The revolution is now about to enter its third year with few successes for the newly named United States. Monies are scarce; the ports are blockaded by their British enemy and General Washington’s small army, wintering at Valley Forge, is hard put to survive. The family’s commercial activities have faltered with the advent of war. However, the family has fully participated in their new country’s defense and they have supported their new country both on land and on the sea. Once again they have privateering letters of marque; this time from the Continental Congress. The capture of enemy ships often provided rich rewards to be shared with their new country. A new ship was in the final stages of construction in their Baltimore shipyard destined to wreak havoc with the British opium fleet in the China seas. Such it was for the Butlers in the early spring of 1778 in the in their new country’s fight to shed themselves of British tyranny.

A lot of the questions in the book were on bond interfaces, none of which came on the exam. There isn't a wide enough cross section of questions to help you to prepare for the exam. Your better off reading the Check Point admin guides if you don't have access to the Lab/Study guide.

By Pat Bryant In the summer of 2014, out of the clear blue sky, I had my first panic attack on an a flight from Atlanta to Chattanooga, TN. Fortunately, I was able to exit the airplane before takeoff, but began to spin rapidly downward into a world of which I had no understanding - in fact, completely bewildered, scared, and depressed. Most people have no idea what's happening when they have a panic attack, and I was no different. After seeing my GP (who diagnosed it immediately), I scheduled 6 sessions with a well-meaning but relatively ineffective counselor who recommended relaxation techniques that were only mildly effective. I was in a season of job change, and this was going to effect it radically, as I was heading back into consulting with consistent travel, meetings, interactions, etc. Panic and anxiety was exploding into agoraphobia, to the point that I couldn't go to the back of my local grocery or club store without feeling the walls closing in on my life. I was in prison.Only by the grace of God did I stumble upon Barry McDonagh and the Panic Away program. I consumed every ounce of his information, and began to practice his techniques: 1. Say "so what is the worst that can happen?" 2. Fully and completely accept and allow the discomfort (NOT DANGER) or anxious feelings and thoughts 3. Face it down - dare it to do its worst and 4. Engage in another activity - dwell in the moment to reacclimate the brain.Unlike many other programs, Barry's counter-intuitive approach of addressing our fears and anxiety head on forced me to deal with discomfort in a new way, and to prove to myself that I could push through anxiety and stretch out my boundaries. Anxiety is no longer something from which to "be cured," rather, it's a condition that I'm learning to welcome and live with, converting anxiety into excitement. Barry's approach is warm, intelligent, common sensical, and effective. No matter if you're a newbie like me, or have dealt with this for years, there's life change in this book.

This is the most helpful book, professional therapy or medication I have ever experienced. It is an amazing book full of wisdom, insight and practical tools that you can use to help free yourself from your anxiety. I have listened to the audio book MANY times in the months since I obtained it on the Indiegogo campaign before the public launch. (The audio book is now available at [...] if you buy the book on Amazon.) It has made a tremendous difference in my life. I understand my anxiety issues better, my anxiety levels have dropped significantly and I know how to deal with them. I am a religious person. This is the first non-scripture book for which I have thanked God in prayer. In all sincerity I recommend this book without reservation for anyone with any anxiety, worry, obsessive-compulsive, or panic disorder. STUDY this book! Read it over and over and glean a great perspective, obtain great tools and bless your life with the ability to treat (not manage) your anxiety!

I was impressed with the previous book by the author but this one is even better. To be honest, until I discovered this author, I didn't think anxiety was curable. I am so glad to have been wrong and so glad to have the effective methods under my belt that are spelt out in this publication. I would give it six stars but amazon won't let me!
