Many Ideas, Not One Recipe for All, Encouraging Tone By ChristineMM In this short book Binz gives many suggestions for ways for teens to spend their summer. She begins with a call to use the summer to relax and have fun, which I agree with. She suggests families can spend the summer catching up on postponed home organization (not so much fun). Once those ideas are aside she spends the rest of the book talking about productive ways to spend the summer which involve studying academic subjects that count toward high school credit towards graduation or for a college application.The most surprising advice was that if summer arrives and you are 75-80% finished with a course to call it done and abandon it. Stopping and calling a course done is also advised if the student hits burnout. Those recommendations may directly conflict with her other advice that a full credit course must be at least 120 hours of instruction or a half credit class needs to be at least 60 hours. Binz also suggests calling a course done when mastery was attained, thus ending a class earlier if mastery is obtained before 120 hours. I won't argue with that other than to say you need to have a way to figure out if mastery has been obtained (how do you measure that with a non-clear cut class)?I like Binz's chapter on delight driven learning, in which she suggests using the summer for mentoring or just learning things they are interested in. Binz likens delight directed learning to play for teenagers.For the school loving kid Binz suggest doing regular school-y learning such as reviewing math material, doing standardized test prep work, and filling gaps in learning. She recommends outsourcing teaching to hired teacher.Binz also suggests filling summer with activities that were not done during the year such as focusing on PE or paid employment which she terms "occupational education" and makes it a course.There is a chapter on CLEP tests with a focus to read the prep book then take the test. She tells how one son took one or two tests every week. I'm impressed. For passing scores she also wrote that up as a full class having been taken and gives it an honors designation.Lastly the book contains some common high school literature suggestions and she says to use summer to read ahead for the upcoming school year.I enjoyed this book, mostly for the many suggestions and for the upbeat and positive tone. So many different ideas are shared here and she is non-judgmental about each. She does not recommend doing just one thing for every kid. Although there are many school-y ideas here she repeatedly emphasizes finding time to relax and a way to homeschool with peace as the attitude to strive for. This book was like talking with a comforting friend.I rate this book 4 stars = I Like It

Glad To Have A Plan For Summer By Jessica Some really helpful and practical advice for homeschool parents of middle school, high school/college bound kids. Includes a suggested reading list for college bound students, activities for summertime learning and a reminder to take a break and relax for a time! I really love the idea of using the summer to read the kids upcoming literature for the following school year. Great idea.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. General information ok, specific advice questionable By Rootbeer This is only the second Lee Binz Coffee Break Book I have read. The content in this one was mixed -- in some places, the information was general and sometimes helpful. However, when Mrs. Binz was specific, in the case of CLEP testing, her experience isn't necessarily one you want to imitate.This book contains eight chapters. Mrs. Binz gives some very general flags to follow for "When to Take a Break?" in Chapter 1. She gives YOU, the Homeschool Parent, a job or three to do during the summer in the second chapter, "Summer Record Keeping Catch Up." The third chapter, "Delight Directed Summertime Learning," harkens back to her Delight Directed Learning e-book, which does a much better job covering how to give your child the space to find their passion and things you can do to help them along like finding them a mentor. In Chapter 4, "Summer School Options," Mrs. Binz outlines several options for how to educate during the summer if you choose to go after actual schoolwork activities.Chapter 5, "Save Money! Homeschool College This Summer!" is where Mrs. Binz and I parted ways. She introduces the idea of using CLEP tests to earn college credit or simply to backup her homeschool grades. While the latter is useful, be wary of relying on CLEP tests to help with the former. Whether a college accepts CLEP for credit varies widely. Also, even if the college itself accepts CLEP credit, sometimes a specific department within the college won't accept certain tests to count for your child's MAJOR. Also, I personally felt her comment about putting "honors" next to that course (when sometimes all her kid did, by her own admission, was to study the prep book for a week or two) on their transcript was a poor choice, if not exactly unethical. Do your own homework on the subject of CLEPs and look into those versus AP exams and SAT-IIs.Two of the last three chapters were on College Preparation and Summer Reading. The College Prep chapter advised you to read ahead and think about visiting colleges. There wasn't a lot of information in this chapter. I thought it could have been combined with the assignments listed in the second chapter. The summer reading chapter includes a recommended booklist for college-bound students. Many of the books are recommended elsewhere as part of a high school course. While rereading a book has great value, I have found some students push back at having to reread a book as part of their schoolwork that they have already read, especially if they didn't enjoy it. (Many of the books on Mrs. Binz's reading list, while interesting to some of us adults, are gloomy, depressing, disturbing, or a tough slog for a high schooler. I would recommend saving them for the actual course rather than trying to assign them twice.)The final chapter title is, "Choose Peace." When choosing summer activities, the author recommends taking it easy versus pushing hard during those summer months. It was a valid 'last thought.'Overall, while there wasn't much meat to this e-book, one set of specifics (gaining college credit via CLEP) could be misleading and the other specific advice (summer reading list) might not be the best choice for your particular student. I've given the rating I feel it deserves.

EZ books By Monika In order to get a real GMAT prep - I would recommend you use the EZ Solutions series of 10 books, or whichever book(s) you think you need most help with. These books are very detailed oriented and cover everything on the GMAT math. First use the review modules to get the concepts and then use the workbooks for practice. Some of the most challenging math topics, such as basic arithmetic and number properties, algebraic concepts, complex word problems, logical reasoning problems, etc., are brilliantly explained in these books. Just because of the high price of the book, you can skip the math strategies book. However, the EZ basic workbook is a good refresher to get started and advanced workbook is a "must have" if you are aiming for a high score.After doing all this, use the OG and you will see a dramatic difference in your scores. You don't even have to take any of those pricy courses. I followed this process and my scores have jumped from the 500-range to the 700-range. Good luck in your prep.

The books also help show you short cuts for calculating math problems quickly. If you couple this series with the Kaplan math you should be set. I would suggest you purchase them.

1 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Rather poor arithmetic review By Tyler Durden I did not find this EZ Solutions Arithmetic review very helpful. The main reason is, that it is not very textbook/explanatory-like, but instead lists one definition after the other; this is not what I expect from a good math book (I found the math review in the barron's GMAT book a lot better). Also the first 14 pages are just "we bring you the breakthrough etc."-bla bla.But, after all, the book does give you some arithmetic review, so its not a total waste.

Review Review of A Casualty of Grace by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite - 5 Starreadersfavorite.com/book-review/a-casualty-of-graceLisa Brown's historical fiction novel, A Casualty of Grace, is an outstanding and beautifully written novel about two British brothers who were sent to Canada in a migration experiment that exposed many of the young participants to suffering and hardship. It's also Oliver's coming of age story, as the twelve-year-old navigates his way through the dysfunctional family he's become an unwilling part of. Watching Oliver and Mrs. Pritchard bridge the divide of fear and hostility engendered by her alcoholic and abusive husband is inspiring and makes what might have been simply too grim a story work marvelously. Liza Pritchard is as unforgettable a character as Oliver is, and their interactions are poignant and moving. Brown also brings to life the stark majesty of the Canadian seasons, especially winter, in her novel, and many of the nature descriptions and passages are lyrical and unforgettable. A Casualty of Grace is most highly recommended.

Many of those hit the hardest, those in orphanages and workhouses, and worse yet on the streets, have been destined to live lives of poverty and despair. Those waifs and strays, while a nuisance to some, had the sympathy of many who wished for them a life better than that which providence had given them. And so, near the end of the nineteenth century, a migration scheme was realized that would see more than a hundred thousand such children sent off to Canada and Australia over a fifty-year period. These so-called British Home Children, many of whom were not orphaned and their parents none the wiser, were removed from their homeland in the hopes of giving them better lives; oftentimes the result was anything but. Some British Home Children returned to Britain, but most stayed, and despite the harshness that many of them faced, most became productive members of the communities they were placed in.  After aging out of the program, and with few other options, many enlisted and bravely fought in the First World War for their new country, some making the ultimate sacrifice. Today, multiple generations later, we can look back with perfect vision and see the mistakes that were made with their care, and the terrible plight many suffered as a result.  One thing is for certain, the fabric of Canadian society was made stronger by their presence.

It was in England during 1893 that Oliver and Simon were left to fend for themselves when their mother died. Workhouses for uncared for children had been established and children were often sent to other places in the world as British Home Children to work on farms, in mills and in factories at the mercy of sometimes harsh and cruel taskmasters. Such was the fate of Oliver and Simon arriving in Canada in 1895 at the tender ages of thirteen and five.This well written story is filled with beautifully descriptive sentences and phrases presented in short paragraphs and interwoven seamlessly into the fiber of the story. “It was just a small opening, but the sun managed to make its way in, illuminating minute flecks of suspended dust and turning them into a sea of brilliant sparkles that looked like fireflies dancing in the unguarded moonlight.”The dialect that was spoken by Oliver and Simon would have been challenging to write but the use of it was very effective, becoming part of the story itself and providing a realism to the story given the time and place.The story flowed effortlessly, always with intent as each and every page was important and significant bringing meaning and purpose to the entire story. There were no space fillers or unnecessary words or paragraphs. Foreshadowing filled the reader with expectations, dread and anticipation.The characters in the story were amazing. Oliver’s strength of character went well beyond his years. Simon was painted as the carefree, typical five year old, very protective of his older brother. Mr. Pritchard, the cruel, uncaring, taskmaster who in the end, met his fate in an interesting twist. Peter Potts, who was Oliver’s predecessor on the Pritchard farm, became Oliver’s trusted friend. Liza Pritchard was portrayed as a kind, gentle, pathetic soul, trapped by fate from which she saw no escape. It was interesting to see how the author had characters, such as Peter Potts, Mr. Eager and the Fox children, appear and reappear later on in the story in meaningful ways. Well done, Lisa Brown!There is nothing about this book that I did not like. In my mind it is a real masterpiece. It is certainly the best one of the three books that I have read written by this author.I received this story from the author with no expectations. It would appeal to anyone who enjoys immersing themselves in historical fiction. It is truly a wonderful read!

Engaged my emotions By writes4coffee ****I received this book from Maple Leaf Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.****A Casulaty of Grace tells the story of Oliver, a British orphan who is sent to Canada in the hopes of a better life. Along with his little brother Simon, they cross the ocean, not knowing what awaits them. Oliver is placed at the Pritchard farm. He is expected to work hard and not cause trouble. Eventually, his brother joins him at the farm We get to read about how their lives progress.This book was a well-written account of how some of the children sent to Canada during this time period must have lived. Lisa Brown managed to engage my emotions while I read, and I flinched each time something bad happened to Oliver. The ending of the story caught me by surprise, but in a good way. I was satisfied with the book's ending.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I have never read a book that I cried so ... By Richelle I have never read a book that I cried so much! Maybe I am a bit too sentimental. But this boy went through more then physical abuse. He went through unlimited emotional abuse from every angle. I felt the boys grief, pain, anger and disbelief. Lisa Brown touched the very core of an issue that effected many orphans. She wrote a novel that transported me into the very inner being of the young boy as he had his mother die and set out to protect his brother and maintain their need to remained together. They faced the grips of adults in a world that couldn't and didn't protect them.
