1937. A young press photographer for the Daily Mirror falls in love with a crusading reporter. There’s murder before breakfast and a beer and a beating for lunch. Just don’t be late for dinner or a deadline. And remember, sometimes it’s not your best shot, but taking the shot you have that counts. This is Fiorello LaGuardia’s New York, where Thomas Dewey battles Lucky Luciano and the mob, millions are out of work and maybe out of luck, Stalinist is set against Trotskyite and the German American Bund harbors Nazi spies. It's a time of hard bitten city editors, soft hearted molls, Seabiscuit and The Babe, when Winchell’s gossip paid the bills for Hearst’s newspaper empire, where a nation moved to the beat of Goodman and Gershwin, and Hepburn and Stanwyck filled our silver dreams, while Hughes and the DC-3 arose, Earhart and the Hindenburg fell, the 20th Century Limited departed and Superman arrives in the nick of time.

About the Author Vincent McCaffrey, would-be raconteur, rocketeer, adventurer, architect, private detective, knight without armor, farmer, and philosopher, has been the proprietor of Avenue Victor Hugo Books since 1972. After a few years of selling the printed word from a pushcart, he opened a bookshop on Newbury Street in Boston which (sadly) closed in 2004. In ancient times he was also the publisher of Fiction magazine and its successor, Galileo, a magazine of science and fiction. For good or ill, closing the shop has, at last, left him the time to write. Fortunate husband, father, and dubious wit, he now lives in Abington, Massachusetts.

Realistic because in most mystery stories the detectives, professional or amateur, seem to devote every hour, every minute of the day to looking for the killer, the thief, the solution of the crime. Every chapter of a book is about it. Tha's just not true in real life for cops or in this case journalists. For cops there's always another murder, another robbery, another case, and for hot shot photographer, Hugh McNeill, and Cassandra Green, the investigative reporter who makes Hugh's heart beat faster, there's always another burning building, another movie star interview, another dog up in a tree that needs rescuing. They're like jugglers who keep having more balls in the air as they attempt to solve a chain of possible serial killings. All of this happens in New York City in 1937, a great year in American history. The Hindenburg goes down in flames, Amelia Earhart goes up in legend; Orson Welles is directing plays; Barbara Stanwyck and Humphrey Bogart are making movies; Walter Winchell types and Ernest Hemingway writes. Mr. McCaffrey vividly depicts life in the Big Apple with what must have been ferocious researching. Everything from dancing to music of Benny Goodman's band to eating on The Twentieth Century Limited. And what big city newspaper one wonders did McCaffrey work at to give such a real seeming picture of life in the newsroom. In amongst all this Hugh and Cassandra are in a courtship dance while they interview and snap Nazis, Commies, and other politicians. Not to mention dodging bullets and punches that are thrown their way.So grab a ticket or a copy. It's only $16 on this ride. You won't forget it.

The story pulls the reader in, as we follow Daily Mirror photographer Hugh McNeill and reporter Cass Green as they investigate a series of unusual murders. The setting, 1937 New York, is lovingly limned, and the characters – newspaper men, movie stars, madams, cops, and hooligans -- are quirky and likeable. Full of wry humor, Dark Heart of Night is more than just a rollicking read: it's a paean to a bygone age and a thoughtful reflection on human nature.
