I think the internet is great and search engines are great but it doesn't change the fact that the information is scattered all over the place. The average person is just not that motivated as a researcher to find this stuff. Anyone that knows anything about research knows that search engines miss a lot of relevant websites simply because these websites, for one reason or another, have not used the key terms being used for the search much even though they are very relevant in that particular field which means very good websites are often not picked up by a search engine because they're not savvy enough or interested in trying to do sleazy things to optimize their position in the search engines while the people looking to make money try every trick they know to get people to see their websites. Good internet research by itself takes time and is tedious. Search engine searches always miss something important. It's not as simple as typing a keyword into a search engine and having it all appear magically in front of you. You have to sift through the information. There are major websites and directory websites for most fields that make it much easier if you know where to look. What I've noticed is that when I look something up on a search engine, I have those websites right there in front of me for the moment but then when I leave that area by linking onto another website, I forget where this particular information is located so I have to do a search all over again and I might miss it next time by typing in a different keyword or something like that. You're limited by what's on the screen at any moment. I often highlight search results (F8), copy the block then save it as text. A lot of people don't know about a lot of things that exist therefore they can't use the internet to find them because they don't know they're there. That's why you have to take the time to read articles and books to find out what's going on in a field. There are about twenty major categories of life (medical, travel, love, sex, life, money, real estate, law, home, cars, business, education, etc.). A Very Comprehensive List of Online Resources By NIZAR N NAKFOOR No matter what your research interests are, if you are looking for one reference that will surely list internet resources relevant to your research interests, then this book is for you. It has what might be one of the most comprehensive lists of online resources covering all kinds of topics and interests: global, regional and country search engines; the 500 most popular websites; directories; blogs... and even super books. You name your topic and you will find something relevant in this book which deserves a five star rating as one of the richest lists of online resources.But if you are looking for a guide on internet research skills, methodology and techniques then you will be disappointed same as I was. With the exception of few pages at the begining and then here and there about the internet and online research in general, the book is an endless list of online resources and websites. This is why, as a book about online research skills and how to do it, I would rate it one star only. Hence my overall rating of 3 stars for the book.
