The Dark Ages grip the world in famine and war, but in the Kingdom of Veronia, situated among the free cities, land is abundant and life is cheap. Captain Leo Rosewood, after earning the nickname “Bloody Rose” for single-handedly slaughtering dozens of enemy soldiers in the battle of the Frostbite, defies the king to protect Veronia from its biggest vulnerability: invasion. At the risk of execution and the lives of more Veronian soldiers, he gathers two thousand volunteers to follow the enemy and finish the fight. Upon his return two years later, Leo’s life is spared but his punishment is fierce. After thirty-nine public lashings, he is locked in a dungeon and held prisoner for weeks, where he learns of more threats against Veronia—and Leo personally. Ruthless, unflinching, and wielding a newfound power to harness celestial energy, Leo escapes the capital during an enemy siege and travels to Tamore, where a group of soldiers gather to strengthen their skills—both physical and fantastical. Fed by allies and armed with weaponry given to them by Leo’s brother, Bishop Jewel, the soldiers are ready for imminent war. Meanwhile, Bishop Jewel and the members of the High Priest’s Council wield faith to salvage their unraveling kingdom. But what they discover is that Veronia is the battlefield of a supernatural war—with biblical proportions.

Tears of Blood (The Veronian Archives Book 1), by Daniel L Welch

Review "TEARS OF BLOOD is an inspiring and gripping work of Historical Fantasy--a genre many attempt but few get right. Welch succeeds with prose that's both blunt and beautiful, with seamlessly-woven fantastical elements that feel frighteningly and wonderfully real, and by raining terror upon his characters while instilling in the reader a palpable sense that everything can still get much worse. Though Welch doesn't shy away from the violence of war, his message of heroism--the kind that means tenaciously doing the right thing--is the real marvel in TEARS OF BLOOD."-Michelle Josette

The story centers on a fictional territory in which a bold young captain named Leo Rosewood is determined to fight for victory of his homeland, the kingdom of Veronia, which is under attack by the barbarian Gorronians. Leo is willing to defy the King and endure harsh discipline in the process, and he’s earned the moniker “Bloody Rose” since he’s taken down quite a few enemy soldiers in the battle of the “Frostbite”.Daniel L. Welch weaves a great yarn of battle and bloodshed in between the fight for honor and justice in this tale set in what feels like the medieval period; the allusions are very authentic and spot-on so I know that historical research was painstakingly carried out. His writing style is earthy, straightforward; at times the characters’ thoughts are darkly funny. The settings as well as the characters seem unique and superbly imaginative.Although intended to be historically true to life I detected a slight element of anachronism upon the mention of “factories, businesses and banks” amongst this landscape in which there are also inns, taverns and dungeons as well. In the case of Tears of Blood, it was done very well. Religion figures prominently in the story; but it is a toss-up as to what is the official religion, as Christian beliefs are espoused in Veronia and the outlying regions, but so does the practice of magic and astrology as there are various mentions of different zodiac signs and star groupings.I think fans of fantasy literature will find Tears of Blood a worthwhile addition to their reading collection. Also as this is the beginning of a series, I am glad that there will be more in store for readers who enjoyed the first of the Veronian Archives.

What I have learned is these aren't easy stories to write but, when they are done well, they can be extraordinary. Author Daniel L. Welch is definitely one to watch as his debut novel, "Tears of Blood" was a fantastic read that blends some fantasy and historical elements into a very original story. The tale of the Kingdom of Veronia and one man's quest protect it. This quest turns into an epic story and it is one not to be missed. Loved the setting, the characters, and the great writing here. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Valor that was on constant display hundreds of years ago is rekindled, to bring us a new group of fighters for what is right and just in the form of Leo and his faithful followers. Backstabbing, unlikely allies, dark forces, and help from unexpected places will keep you reading.
