By cleo I have to say that even though this book is aimed at YA i really enjoyed this book and adults would certainly enjoy reading this book. Ian Tennent has a way of describing things so vividly and soulfully, that it brought my childhood memories of school trips to the gorgeous Cape Vidal back to me in full colour."He looked up at the canopy above their heads and inhaled, feeling his spirits soar and somersault among the tangle of vines and exotic bush. Impossible not to feel like Robinson Crusoe in a place like this." That's exactly how i felt standing there :) If you have never been there I'm pretty sure you will feel the same way after reading this book.Lines like "“Thinks he’s Sarel,” yelled Hannes with a grin, as the vehicle drifted a little too wide and fronds of tall sugar cane snapped at their ears." (referring to a South African racing driver) and "They watched a bit of TV but soon tired of it. Hannes, like Craig, didn’t have TV4 and, with no radio to catch the simulcast signal on TV3, TJ Hooker just looked and sounded dumb in Afrikaans." had me catching myself laughing out loud at long forgotten popular culture and sayings from South Africa in the 80's.I loved the flow of the storytelling and Sean, Hannes and Craig are such well rounded characters that i felt personally invested in their adventure. I was hooked from page one and i would recommend it for all ages. My only complaint with the book is that after a long tense build up the end seemed to happen very quickly and it left me feeling like "what just happened?".It was my first Ian Tennent book, but it certainly wont be my last.

I loved Zululand Snow, and I secretly wondered if this latest offering would live up to my high expectations. It did. In fact, it exceeded them! Ian has an amazing ability to make words come alive on the page. His description of a Natal Mahogany tree, for example:.....Jurassic-looking Natal Mahogany that was reaching the end of its days. It leaned above the canvas of soft sand like a prize-fighter coming off the ropes, about to go down. Most of its remaining upper branches were dead or dying, and it bore the scars of several rough amputations where the Parks-Board had seen fit to trim its limbs. By some miracle a covering of leaves still swathed two of its massive, gnarled hands in greenery and it was this show of defiance that the Parks-BoardAnd later:The mahogany under whose boughs they had been sleeping was a defiant prize-fighter no more. It lay alongside the scrap of their tent like a great dead beast, one arm dislocated, pointing to the heavens, the other torn off at the shoulder, but somehow trapping the tent in its hand, or maybe offering a pocket of protection in its final act.A delightful tale steeped in local flavour. I highly recommend!

You know, T's &C's apply and all that.Zululand Gold is the second installment of the epic adventures of three boys: Craig, Sean and Hannes (pronounced Huh-ness, for those non-South Africans). Set in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, Craig's story picks up on a school trip to Cape Vidal - if it wasn't obvious from the name: a camping site in the beautiful St Lucia area. But the trip, intended to clear alien invasive plants that are choking the natural habitat, turns out to be more than Craig and his friends bargained for as Craig comes face to face with an old enemy.At the same time, while sat around a campfire, Craig learns of a new mystery to solve; a sunken ship and heap loads of gold. One question remains, will Craig risk it for the biscuit (because you know, there's a bad guy in Cape Vidal, but there's also enough gold to buy, like, a PlayStation AND an Xbox), or will he spend his summer holiday playing cricket with Sean - which I suppose has its own perks, Sean's sister the audience.
