Beatrice is the victim of an arranged match to the Duke of Saffredento, who hastily abandons her to an estate full of forgotten traditions and curses. When the portrait of a strange woman begins turning up in the house, she summons the great sorcerer, Hildigrim Blackbeard, to investigate. The portrait, it seems, has traveled through time to find her—and bring her back by any means necessary. For she can no longer be Beatrice of Saffredento, but a young woman who died two-hundred years ago and must be reborn through the magic of an Enchanted Circle. But no one in recorded history has ever conjured such a Circle, though quite a few have gone mad in the attempt...

Review From Inkitt.com:"A triumph in the slow, steady built of tension. Grasso has painted for us a fully-realized world, familiar and unfamiliar in all the right ways. The reader is not sure whether the narrator is unreliable or not, which adds an extra sense of peril." (Shawn Patrick Cooke)"This story simply oozes darkness. Even before the word gothic was mentioned it reminded me greatly of it. From the start I felt a sense of tension from Beatrice that I quickly found myself caught in as well. I think part of this is because you are unique gifted in your ability to weave in description without taking away from the story. The world is built in a flowing motion that almost seems to creep up." (Dryger)" This story is quickly paced, well developed, with attention to detail. The Woman and Beatrice remain unique individuals who do the gothic genre proud. It's clear the author is educated and researched on the time period and the descriptions and speech patterns reflect it." (hjwilder)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hauntingly charming By Caitlin Jones The first time I read "The Winged Turban", I was supposed to be writing. More specifically, I was with my group of readers and working on my own writing, but stopped just to read the entire first chapter of this novel out loud. We laughed, we awed, and discussed the story's opening for whatever time we were supposed to edit. It wittiness stuck with us all in its own right, and that same witty, adventurous nature is what ultimately led me to read the whole book."The Winged Turban" follows one Beatrice, a clever young lady, recently married into the wealthy Saffredento family and settled into her husband's spectacular- if empty, mansion. As she awaits his return, she becomes the subject of paranormal phenomenon by way the house's mysterious portrait, The Woman With The Winged Turban. Haunting to the point of seeming alive, the painting seems quite intent on getting Beatrice's attention. Led by her own needs to understand the portrait's somewhat sinister nature, Beatrice paves her way into a vast adventure to learn the identity of the strange woman. The book can be easily labeled as Gothic fantasy, but after reading through, it's not quite a traditional follower of its genre. It is indeed dark and magical, but also dances with the likes of humor, history, and even hints of science fiction, owning each aspect in powerful prose and finely-tuned storytelling. Reminiscent of Terry Pratchett, Diana Wayne Jones, and William Goldman, the narrative is peppered a certain cleverness, charming and lighthearted without ever negating from the general tone. The flow is so natural that you almost forget you are reading, which led to several too-late nights of reading on my part. It was forgivable lack of sleep though. Each character memorably adds something to the story, from the independent soul that is Beatrice, to the secretive William, her husband-to-be. From the fiery prowess of Dorothea, to the gentle strength of Hiligrim Blackbeard. Everyone in the story serves a purpose, affecting and changing their supernatural world in very human ways. The ending is an especially perfect example of why this works, and remains one of the wittier finales I've read in some time.As unique as it is engaging, this is worth the read. Worth another couple reads and then some, actually. A subtle and magical gem.

Full of humor and wit and thought provoking questions about the nature of time and what it truly means to be human. Looking forward to another book by this author.
