The paths of three strangers collide on a desperate road trip along Route 66. One is running away, one is racing the clock, and the child who binds them merely hopes to survive. Middle-aged widow Mabel Crowley hasn’t felt needed in years. But when a homeless child named Stryker shows up at church one Sunday, Mabel’s life takes a drastic turn. George Stanton is not who he seems. Running from the law in his brand new 1955 Lincoln Continental, he’s planning a mad dash to Mexico to leave his past behind. He can’t let an old woman and a sick kid get in his way. Eleven-year-old Stryker has never eaten with utensils and doesn’t know how to read, but she can identify the make, year, and model of every car on the road. She won’t reveal the identity of her mother or why she’s been told to never let her tattered stuffed monkey out of her sight. Mabel races against time to save Stryker’s life. George only wants to save his own skin. Soon their destinies become irrevocably entwined, and the road they choose could change their lives forever.

By Judy Rebeiro While reading The Road to Terminus, I found myself flooded with changing emotions as I connected with Mable, George and Stryker. For me a great book is like a roller coaster ride, easing me into interest as I slowly begin to climb the first hill getting to know the characters, than plunging into their emotions, lives and circumstances, locked in till the end, racing to the finish, slowing for the curves and then racing once more, desiring to see how it all turns out, yet not wanting it to end. I must say this was a great roller coaster ride down historic Rt. 66. It contains all I love when reading, personalities I grow to love and can relate to, settings I see myself visiting, humor, love, sorrow, fear, anger, adventure and lives changed through the power of God. It's been a pleasure getting to know Mabel Crowley, I just loved her hankie waving, strength of character, and trust in our heavenly Father's sovereignty, I will miss my daily dose of the egotistical, self-serving George Stanton and his oppressive struggles, and I want to stay with unschooled, yet discerning and sensitive, blue eye little Stryker, who unknowingly binds their hearts together forever. Wow, Catherine you are a gifted writer, thank you for penning The Road to Terminus, I look forward to reading your future works.

By Clarice G James Catherine Leggitt is a master of creating conflict and intrigue. In The Road to Terminus, I never knew what would happen next—and couldn’t wait to find out. This story is a real-life example of how God orchestrates our lives even when we believe we have His plan all figured out. There’s not one perfect person in the group of three travelers—even the devout Christian. In the end, we discover God has amazing grace for them all.

Poignant Story with Unusual Depth By Donn Taylor In 1955, George Stanton—drug user, alcoholic, and embezzler—flees from Chicago when both the underworld and the law close in on him. Meanwhile in St. Louis, the aged widow Mabel Crowley takes in a street urchin, a little girl named Stryker. The reluctant Stryker holds on desperately to a stuffed monkey toy because the mother who abandoned her said never to let the monkey out of her sight. A medical exam shows that Stryker has acute leukemia, and only an experimental treatment at the UCLA Medical Center has any hope of a cure. So Mabel loads Stryker and the monkey into her aging Studebaker and sets out for California.A few miles down Highway 66 they find a wreck. George Stanton, driving his Lincoln while drunk, has sped into sharp curve and crashed. Mabel and Stryker take the ungracious George in, and thus begins a long and troubled odyssey for the ill-matched and cross-motivated trio.In author Catherine Leggitt's practiced handling, this conflicted situation becomes both a fascinating story and a character study of unusual depth. As the journey progresses, each of the three characters changes the other two and is changed by them. As a bonus for the reader, the author's detailed historical research on the geography of Highway 66 and its environs, together with her extensive knowledge of classic automobiles, add interest at each point along the way. The author weaves all of these threads into a narrative of increasing tension, leading to a climax in which the characters and the reader confront the stark reality of eternal truth. These factors make for an excellent book with a depth rarely found in commercial fiction.

Learn to read fast--the cliffnotes By RL SMITH I would say this book has some techniques to deal with reading fast and understanding what you're reading instead of just taking in a bunch of words. One technique I liked that the author discussed was how to zone in on groups of words in order to move through a book or paragraph more quickly. I did take a course to prepare for the GMAT that taught a few techniques on how to get through the reading comprehension portion of the test in a quick amount of time and got some similar takeaways from this book. Its not extremely detailed which is good since I just wanted the nuggets I could use so its concise and good in that way. Would have liked more techniques though which is why only 4 stars.

If you are a beginner into this field than you'll enjoy it even further. Speed reading is for real but it does require work. If you practice what's in this book, you'll definitely improve your reading skills.

Insightful insider's guide for concept artists By Parka [[VIDEOID:b8663f7c72b8fccf2e121ea569f5dce6]]For many years, concept artist Eliott Johnson Lilly has been receiving questions regarding the concept art industry and how aspiring artists can get a job. Lilly is a concept artist with ten years of experience and this book is the response to those questions. The coverage is quite comprehensive. Even though I'm not an aspiring concept artist, I still found the information to be very illuminating. This book is based on Lilly's experience rather than all on facts. The content covers things like what it takes to be a concept artist and what they actually do. Lilly provides an insider guide and shows you around the industry and how work actually gets done, and how the whole place functions. Its like following him like around the studio as he explains the job. He also talks about the daily life of a concept artist and gives an example of one of his good days and bad days. You'll also get tips on education, how to choose a school and what to study. There are self help tips on how to develop yourself artistically and technically, and how to create and present your portfolio. What I like about the book are the many examples and insider "secrets", like how you can get fired for leaking images, or posting work without permission, which is why it's so difficult to find game related art even on concept artists' websites. There are other miscellaneous things like how eating junk food will make you overweight, how people keep quiet when a video game flops, managing gossips and rumors, whether you're wasting your time and your parents money, talent vs hard work, internship. Everything is written in a no-nonsense and engaging manner and is brutally honest. Finally there are interviews with other selected well known concept artists such as Nicolas "Sparth" Bouvier, David Levy, Stephan Martiniere, Ben Mauro and Farzad Varahramyan. These guest artists will tell you their version of what it's like to be concept artists, and also provide useful tips and warnings. It's great to read about the different experiences. This is a highly insightful book. It's a 144-page paperback published by Design Studio Press.Recommended to all aspiring concept artists and students.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I liked it. I read it in 2 days By Kilyén Balázs I liked it. I read it in 2 days, its not a big book, but it helps to cement down, what most people think or know (or actually dont know) about concept art.I might as well say art generally in Video games. It feels correct, no lies. The book was in fine shape, no delays. As content and quality, hmm, not sure, what do people expect? What you have to keep in mind is :Its not an art book .Its not a "how to draw" book. But it is : Helping you to know what you need to know about the career. Helps you understand, that this is a job, like any other, just more creative (in fact its a must have).Helps you understand the basic aspects, what and how differing skillsets work in the job.And most importantly, it pushes you to pick a goal, and not just "i want to be an artist" .In the end, you might feel dissapointed, but even so you feel, that it did help you in some way. For this price its worth it, i had worse books for two times more. The portfolio helping section is really something unique and amazing.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is the book you need. By H. Schuller There are hundreds of beautiful books on Concept Art for video games, but virtually none that actually give you insight to the role of Concept Artist. Eliott Lilly is on the front lines, and knows his stuff. He does a great job giving artists clear, practical advice and strategies. The book layout and sequencing is outstanding. Also unique is Eliott's balanced presentation. Working in the industry isn't all bunny rabbits & rainbows, it can be really hard work in the midst of inordinate chaos. He gives you both sides of the coin while keeping things positive. A huge bonus are the interviews with his peers & mentors in the industry. This book is invaluable for students & up-and-comers exploring at a career as a concept artist, highly recommended!!

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the longest, ongoing hot-and-cold war of the 20th and 21st centuries. It has produced more refugees than any current conflict, generating fully one quarter of all refugees worldwide. Everyone knows that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is important itself, and is also fueling tensions throughout the Middle East. Yet most people shy away from this conflict, claiming it is "just too complicated" to understand. This book is written for people who want a point of entry into the conversation. It offers both a historic and analytic framework. Readers, whether acting as students, parishioners, neighbors, voters, or dinner guests will find in these pages an analysis of the most commonly heard Israeli positions, and a succinct account of the Palestinian voices we seldom hear. I argue that human rights standards have never been used as the basis on which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should be resolved and that only these standards can produce a just and sustainable resolution. This book will be useful for classes in Middle East studies, peace and conflict studies, Middle East history, sociology of race, and political science. It can be helpful for church groups, labor groups, or other grass roots organizations committed to social justice, and for all readers who wish to be informed about this important topic. "Professor Spangler's ... quest for historical and political understanding takes us on a brave and intimate journey into the consequences of Jewish privilege and Jewish victimhood, the agendas of imperial superpowers, and the Palestinian struggle for self-determination." Alice Rothchild, MD, author of Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience, and producer and director of documentary film, Voices Across the Divide "[A] sharp, poignant, well-documented dossier [that] provides readers with all the most-needed facts to grasp the conflict and get involved." - Sam Bahour, co-editor of Homeland: Oral Histories of Palestine and Palestinians and business development consultant and activist based in Palestine "[T]his one is exceptional! It recounts a historical tale; it provides theoretical underpinnings; it does comparative work; it examines all the details and aspects of ongoing debates; and it brings all to life with real-life stories ... the wonder of this book is its insistence on hope - not a naïve, idealistic hope, but one accompanied by a tool-box for concrete action that might right the wrongs of this tragic tale." Anat Biletzki, Professor of Philosophy, Tel Aviv University and Albert Schweitzer Professor of Philosophy, Quinnipiac University; Chairperson of B'Tselem, 2001-2006

An invitation to a new conversation By Susan Landau By using human rights advocacy as the centerpiece of her book, Eve Spangler invites everyone into a thoughtful new conversation about justice in Israel-Palestine. The structure and organization of the book are uniquely engaging - combining Eve's personal experience, enlightened scholarship, and accessible pedagogy. This book is a refreshing analysis of race, nation, and human rights, connecting the dots in ways that breathe life into the conflict and leave room for hope grounded in real possibilities for change. I love this book, and recommend it wholeheartedly for readers at any stage of learning.

Her writing is superb; her analogies pertinent; her personal observations of verbal, non-verbal, confrontational and social interactions between the factions is often heartbreaking. This is a "must read" for those persons searching for new insights into this seemingly never-ending and unresolvable conflict.

This book's title, however, is misleading. "Games" is used in a very loose definition of the term - there are not 122 "games" in this book. This book takes the tenets and procedures of Whole Brain Teaching and spells each out individually, several in great detail; it is an excellent companion to the other book, Whole Brain Teaching for Challenging Kids. If, however, you're expecting to pick up this book to find a treasure-trove of 122 games to apply to your classroom, you may be disappointed. There are several games, but most items presented as games are procedures or teaching techniques.

By Michelle Shelton I can't say enough about the power of Whole Brain Teaching to transform a classroom into a place of learning that both teacher and students adore! After reading Chris Biffle's first book, I found myself immersed in the supporting videos and webcasts, finding even more positive evidence that this amazing technique actually works! The journey of turning my classroom into a Whole Brain Teaching classroom helped me reflect upon my own teaching practices and I was able to see powerful changes, not only my students, but in myself. This new book begins with a quick review of the basics, and then offers tools to bring back the JOY of teaching. With simple but effective games and methods, teachers learn to conquer many frustrating topics and issues that we grapple with daily. These don't require the teacher to purchase supplies, and don't need hours of preparation. They are simple, effective and FUN. My classroom is high poverty (100% free/reduced) and I worried that they wouldn't "buy in" to WBT. Boy, was I mistaken! You can't go wrong with this book. If you find that you have questions, visit the Whole Brain Teaching website or Facebook pages for support from mentors that have first hand experience using these great games. 122 ways to make you smile in your classroom again!

It is bursting full of games that are linked to direct interactive instruction (DUI) and collaborative learning! I've been teaching this way for the past 3 years and I have to say that I've never had such high student engagement...and we are all learning and laughing along the way. Do you know what a Triple Whammy is? Superspeed Reading and Math? Super Improver Team? Diamond Rule? Mind Soccer? Brainies? Well, "it's cool" because you can find out how all of these will help get you to Teacher Heaven. This book isn't drowned in theory, it's all practical and ready to use in your class the next time you see your students. Get this book! You won't regret it.

You get a look at the sort of troubles one would have coming from the past to our present, and what troubles we might have in the past. It forces the reader to look at things we take for granted through an outsiders eyes. All the while getting a glimpse into a history bellow the surface level usually covered in school, and ponders some of the troubles associated with how we think about time travel and how we think it can solve things.

Review "In today’s era of accountability, it is refreshing to find a book that helps teachers think beyond teaching to the tests to focus instead on children and families and ways to create opportunities for successful learning." (Dorene Ross, Professor)"The timing for Reaching Out could not have been better. Just when educators are beginning to realize that teachers need training in how to work with parents, the authors bring us a book that is a welcome breath of fresh air." (Patricia A. Edwards, Professor of Language and Literacy)"Reaching Out describes a great variety of ways to respectfully and productively engage families in helping their children learn and grow. Throughout the text the reader is reminded that parents are experts about their children and that trusting relationships are built on respectful, two-way communications. The authors also remind us that the goal of family involvement is not parent participation at school events and activities but improved student achievement.” (Steve McCafferty, Principal)

In The New 1L, leading teachers in the field describe how, in the first year of legal education, they teach students to act, as well as think, like lawyers. In their courses, clients are central not extraneous. Working under a lawyer's supervision, students interview clients, conduct factual investigations, draft pleadings, and write memoranda and briefs. The authors argue that, in isolation, theory and practice are incomplete, and first-year educators must integrate the two. They discuss the benefits and challenges of this new 1L approach, and also provide a range of successful models for any teacher who wants to adopt this pedagogy to a first-year course. What they say is particularly relevant today, when many are criticizing law schools for their over-reliance on the Langdellian teaching method and failure to produce practice-ready graduates. The innovative courses the authors describe bring about collaborations between classroom instruction, legal research and writing (LRW), and interactions with clinical teachers and lawyers (appointed, or not, as adjunct faculty). These collaborative teaching models are essential to the future success of legal education, the authors contend. These models include LRW courses that base assignments on actual legal work, core courses that add practice components to traditional theoretical instruction, courses adding skills instruction and actual client work to the 1L curriculum, and courses that invite 1L students to enroll in clinics. This book is a must-read for deans, curriculum committees, and legal educators.

Aaliyah's last chance at winning her husband's love is destroyed when she is banished from her home as an 'unclean' sinner. Her husband has branded her as an adulteress and threatens to kill her if she comes near the town. Struggling to survive amidst the fear, grief and bitterness of living in a leper colony, she would give anything just to see her son again. Is God really punishing her with this disease? When rumors of a Healer from Nazareth reach the colony, Aaliyah wonders if this man could really heal her, or if He would despise her like the rest of her people. It is now that Aaliyah must make the most difficult decision of her life: risk her life to appear in public, or die a leper.

Amazing Biblical Fiction By Sarah Age Appropriate For: All AgesBest for Ages: All AgesEver since I read Schamel’s wonderful story The Swaddling Clothes, I have wanted to read another of her books. I bought The Healer’s touch not long after, but it took me a few months to get around to reading it. When I did, I wished I had read it sooner. The Healer’s Touch wasn’t long, just a good novella size. I read it in only a couple of hours, but they were two hours very well spent. In fact, my only complaint about this book is that I wished it had lasted longer. For such a short book, it really packed a punch. I really felt deeply for Aaliyah as she lost so much due to her illness, both physically and emotionally. Her struggle to accept her new life was so realistic. I loved the images of love within the leper colony, the mother who had come with her child, and the matronly woman who takes Aaliyah under her wing.I highly recommend this novella for those who enjoy biblical fiction, well written stories, and books that touch the heart.

I took The Healer's Touch along to read on our trip to New York over July 4th weekend. As it turns out, I didn't have much down time to bury myself in the land of Israel. But my girls all passed it around and gave it rave reviews. One afternoon I stretched out by the pool and instantly lost myself in the pages of The Healer's Touch. In only a few pages I was completely engrossed in the world of Aaliyah.Amber does a fantastic job of portraying life in a leprosy colony. Not in a "feel-sorry-for-me" sorta way or an overly dramatic fashion but in a very down to earth, honest way. It was both instructive and necessary to setting the stage for Aaliyah's story.Despite her age Amber Schamel is a very mature and seasoned writer. Her writing is easy to read, enjoyable and elegant. I was amazed at her wisdom and spiritual insight that is revealed in The Healer's Touch. The first thing I wanted to do after reading the last page of The Healer's Touch? Read volume two of The Days of the Messiah series! Ms. Schamel, I eagerly await your next installment and wish you all the best in what promises to be a brilliant writing career. Here's what Kaitlin had to say...."While only about 100 pages, this novel reaches the core of human sorrow, bitterness and redemption. It is early in the turn of a new millennium. In the small town of Capernaum, Aaliyah is diagnosed with leprosy. She is left with no choice but to leave behind both husband and young son while she learns a new way of life in a leper colony.I expected another cheesy teen-writer novel...I was extremely, and pleasantly surprised! The theme and writing style were both mature and refined. The emotion of the characters was portrayed without being "emotional"...you know what I mean. This is going on my "my current top 25 favorite books" list (found on my sidebar). Also, it is encouraging to see a young, home school graduate writing, not only so well, but with the intention to give all glory to the God who gave her that ability. From me, 5*s, a thank you to Amber Schamel, and an encouragement to her to keep on writing!"

In English Language Learners and the New Standards, three leading scholars present a clear vision and practical suggestions for helping teachers engage ELL students in simultaneously learning subject-area content, analytical practices, and language. This process requires three important shifts in our perspective on language and language learning—from an individual activity to a socially engaged activity; from a linear process aimed at correctness and fluency, to a developmental process, focused on comprehension and communication; and from a separate area of instruction to an approach that embeds language development in subject-area activities. In English Language Learners and the New Standards, the authors:

  • Clarify the skills and knowledge teachers need to integrate content knowledge and language development
  • Show how teachers can integrate formative assessment in ongoing teaching and learning
  • Discuss key leverage points and stress points in using interim and summative assessments with ELLs
  • Provide classroom vignettes illustrating key practices

Finally, the authors explain the theories and research that underlie their vision and examine the role of policy in shaping pedagogy and assessment for ELL students.

Review This easy-to-understand book is worth every minute. The authors offer thoughtful descriptions of content and language integration for English language learners to be college and career-ready. Complex theories of second language acquisition, teaching, learning, and assessment are made accessible. Classroom vignettes across content areas and grade levels make for fun reading. And all in such a concise book. --Ohkee Lee, professor, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York UniversityThis book is a must-read for all educators, but essential for all teachers working with English language learners. It identifies the necessary shifts in instruction and policy that must take place in order for educators to successfully engage in the common core with ELLs. The concrete examples put forth allow educators to reevaluate and quickly shift their practice. It is a game changer for the system as a whole. --Angélica Infante-Green, former CEO, Office of English Language Learners, New York City Department of Education

This book is a tour de force of all the main research findings and theories of the past 30+ years that have shaped how we teach English to non-native speakers. It also does an excellent job of reviewing the new standards and giving practical, useful, and thought-provoking vignettes of how to change our practice as teachers so that we can teach content and language simultaneously using metacognition, authentic tasks, and truly cooperative learning strategies. This book would be excellent for professional development activities.
