Growing Up Smart is a moving account of a Montessori teacher who envisions a joyous path through childhood—a path that guides children to become wholly human: aware of their strengths, their interests, and their ability to make the world a better place. Brimming with real life stories, Saunders immerses us in the wonders of childhood, illustrating how every young child’s driving ambition is to grow up to be competent. Guided by Montessori principles, she becomes deeply concerned with misconceptions educators hold about who is really smart and how children learn. Her account is interwoven with intimate glimpses of the struggles and triumphs of her four sons, giving us some background in the differences between Montessori schools and public schools. It’s an illuminating journey. Those who read this book will take away an insightful and inspiring perspective of how children “grow up smart.”

About the Author Born in San Francisco, Marilyn Saunders was educated in local public schools. She studied classical piano for 15 years and as a teenager taught music to young neighborhood children. She attended BYU and was later accepted at UCLA. Her life took a different turn, however, and pointed her toward Montessori Internationale, a small European training facility in West Los Angeles. As a Montessori teacher Marilyn found her true passion for educating children. Over the span of her career she taught children from the poorest areas of Los Angeles to the most affluent. As an award-winning wildlife artist, she now resides in Idaho near children and grandchildren where she continues writing and painting.

Paul As a young mother of four active and highly individual boys, Marilyn Saunders dreamed of a world in which all children have ample opportunity to explore the world at their own pace, without fear of judgement or rejection; a world in which children learn by doing, by making mistakes and by celebrating discoveries. From her own childhood experiences, she understood that people learn and think very differently and that one-size-fits-all educational programs doom too many children to harmful labels that follow them throughout life. “The stones of failure are gathered way before high school.”Saunder’s curiosity led her to explore and learn the Montessori Method of teaching, which emphasizes the crucial first three years of a child’s learning life and the importance of following the child rather than squeezing the child into a set curriculum of learning objectives. In her quiet, methodical way, Saunders educated herself about this novel approach to learning, with the hopes that it would also be the solution to her own children’s challenging situations. Her book, Growing Up Smart; Stories, Lessons (and Confessions) of a Montessori Teacher, describes not only her experiences with learning and teaching the Montessori way, but also coming to grips with the reality that even this alternative may not be the end-all education solution for a child that needs a more structured environment. On her journey, Saunders discovered that teachers are just people, with all the attendant failings common to humanity. “Not all problems have solutions.” Some of the problems in education originate in homes where some unfortunate children are poorly nourished, both emotionally and nutritionally. Cultural differences create classroom challenges. Then there is the ongoing issue of how to finance education, which is a multi-faceted dilemma, not matter how you approach it.Saunders’ prose is honest and straight forward as she questions her own beliefs and loyalties and ponders her successes and failures as a student, a teacher, and a parent. Her varied teaching experiences provide an opportunity to contrast and compare the Montessori Method with the standardized public school methods that rely on testing and specific skill benchmarks. The book is engaging, well organized, and insightful and accessible to a broad audience.
