According to myth, cats have nine lives, and Alexander Catt II (also known as Lexi) has spent his former lives with scientists of medicine throughout history. In these adventures, Lexi witnesses medical breakthroughs and discoveries, and learns the value of hard work and integrity. In Lexi and Lister Defeat Death, Lexi lives with Agnes and "Dr. Joe" Lister, the Father of Modern Surgery. Dr. Joe's concern about deadly infections following surgery, and his work with scientists Thomas Anderson and Louis Pasteur, lead him to develop antiseptic methods to prevent infection. His first case is their mischievous kitten Bart "the Brat" and his second is 11 year old Jimmy Greensley. As word of Dr. Joe's success spreads, he becomes the victim of ridicule. But Dr. Joe's perseverance and confidence in his new life-saving techniques win over the medical community. Lexi and Lister Defeat Death is a work of fiction that is entertaining for children. It also contains a non-fiction section (the Pawscript) that acts as a resource for teachers, parents, and children, providing well-researched educational information. The Pawscript includes a glossary, important dates, important people, and additional factual information on Joseph Lister's work, microscopes, Louis Pasteur, microbes, and a bibliography,

Review What captures me in each of Marian's stories in the Lexi collection is how playful they are, while holding onto accurate details. The books are clearly well-researched, and they teach so much. The stories bring the history to life in a way that children can connect to, sparking their curiosity and natural sense for fun.Laura Pearson, Teacher Librarian, Ecole Elémentaire William Bridge Elementary SchoolMarian Keen creates an appealing way for middle-grade students to learn about important historical figures. Readers will feel like they are dropped in to the surgical world, experiencing the frustrations and triumphs with Dr. Lister, as he makes important leaps in the medical field. Keen writes in a simple yet engaging manner that allows children to read with ease and access history through literature. From the Author I have been asked why I have written so many stories about history as seen through the eyes of a cat. I have two reasons.First, I am fulfilling the universal human wish to be a fly on the wall, or an invisible witness. My cat is the proverbial fly on the wall, because a cat has an amazing ability to stay incredibly still and blend into its surroundings. A cat can also hide in unexpected places.Second, children need to have heroes to admire and to inspire them. I have chosen to depict heroes from real life who are worthy of their attention. History is amazing. It relates to us the deeds and misdeeds of people. It then exposes the thinking that caused those good and bad actions by the visual means of arts and by written records. No lesson from history is more amazing than the examples of man's creativity. For example, creative thinking brought about the pyramids and the harnessing of atomic energy. In the series Lexi Catt's Meowmoirs--Tales of Heroic Scientists, I have focused on mankind's creative developments in the field of human health sciences. Though subjected to superstitions, religious taboos, political expediency, and financial greed, the development of mankind's understanding and preservation of human health is awe-inspiring. I salute the heroes who have courageously brought new insights to us, such as Imhotep, Hippocrates, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Joseph Lister, and Linus Pauling.Perhaps you, too, and your children, will be amazed and inspired as we look at these heroes and their adventures through the eyes of a cat known as Lexi, Alexander Catt II.
