This historical novel is about transformative changes in a fictional family in first-century Judaea. It is set against the backdrop of the controversial ministry of an itinerant preacher and healer from Galilee, of an ambitious and opportunistic politician who will do anything to satisfy his own selfish desires, of a powerful occupation army that is determined to maintain peace on its own terms, and of the hopes and dreams of ordinary people in an ever-changing world. This is not a story about Jesus, as such, but it is about the everyday life of some of the hard-working people who could have been his neighbors, and about their struggle to understand the exciting, new teacher. The story contains elements of faith, love, community, conflict, justice, hope, and personal growth.

Bailen This well researched historical novel is a very enjoyable read. It tells the story of Eliezer and his family living in Galilee during the time of Jesus earthly ministry Reading this book is an awesome way to learn about life in 1st century Palestine. It also provides a picture of how Judaism was practiced in Jesus time. This provides a backdrop to Jesus teachings. Because the protagonist is a Pharisee, you can watch Eliezer struggle with how to incorporate Jesus teachings into his religion. Not only is Jesus ministry causing changes for Eliezer, but his family goes through other challenges as well. I look forward to more historical fiction from this author.

Lee If you wish a book about political intrigue, revolutions or revolts, this is not the read for you.Though set in a tumultuous time and place, it is a book not about the Christian Revolution or the Jewish Zealots or even the conflicts between the Roman occupation and those living in Judea. If you wish a book that immerses you in the Judaic traditions of a simple family, and the head of the family, Eliezer takes on his personal spiritual journey, then this might be the book for you. It is a book of family, friends, love, tradition and change. It is about God using the relationships in one family's live that changes them. What this book does very well is take the reader into the daily life of a simple Jewish family. The many rituals, practices, observances, festivals, traditions and daily remembrances remind us that to many Jewish families at that time, God was not a belief. God was not an afterthought. God was part of their rising in the morning, their meals, their night, their travels, their friendships, their celebrations. God was as intertwined in their lives as is the drawing of breath.Pair this with the father being a Pharisee and holding fast to those many traditions and laws, and you have the fertile but rocky ground upon which he must reconcile the beliefs he has learned with the teachings and practices, miracles and divinity of this Jesus and his ministry.Like many of us, he hears the stories second hand. He has never seen the crucifixion or resurrection himself. He has gone though thinking Jesus us just another voice among many, to a possible threat to the Jewish establishment, to a spiritual leader, and finally to believing he is the messiah. It is a trip many of us make in one form or another.Thomas Winn has written a great novel about the transformation of not only a simply Pharisee but of ourselves.

Olson Set during the time of Jesus's ministry, this book describes the life of Eliezer, a Pharisee, and his son and daughter. The book shows how people of that time might have learned about Jesus, and how they may have reacted to that knowledge. The author, a long-time Biblical scholar, presents an authentic picture of how people lived at that time, as well as the relationship between the various factions in Roman occupied Judea. The central character must continuously reassess his strict application of the laws when dealing with the situations of his life. Along with the historical and religious ideas presented, the plot moves along with a dangerous adversary threatening the family. The parallel story of Jesus adds interest as well.Thomas Winn has written a unique historical fiction novel.
