By Grady Harp Israeli author Sagit Cohen has both a degree in Business Administration and in Human Resources but is following her passion for writing with the publication of children's books. She believes that given the right guidance, support and encouragement each of us can fulfill every dream we have. Her books radiate that philosophy. This is one of her three books, this one being illustrated by Rina Risnawati. To date her books (including the next one) deal with teaching children the five senses – Book 1 deals with smell, Book 2 with sight, and this third book with hearing.Mindy and her daughter Melanie go for a walk and during their conversation Melanie asks, "Mommy, for what do we use the sense of hearing?"to which Mindy replies that the sense of hearing allows us to hear the songs of birds, the sounds of airplanes, beetles in the fields, trains approaching sounds to protect our walking, the sounds of ocean waves, and finally ‘So that you can hear yourself singing in the shower”.And so ends another lesson about the five sensesSagit makes these learning stories so helpful that she makes us eager for the remaining two sense to come out as books. As always, Sagit Cohen is a terrific teacher and entertainer! Grady Harp, July 15

This book is the kind of book that I would read to my grandchildren when they start asking all their questions. It is estimated that young children ask around 300 questions a day. By reading this book you effectively cut down the number of questions as well as keep them entertained for at least 30 minutes to an hour. It's quality time spent with the child and fun to read.

Preschool is a time in a child's life when adults can stimulate a child's brain to grow as they pass through the various stages of childhood. These changes should involve their motor and sensory functions through experiences in their environment. The purpose of a preschool should be to lay the groundwork to build on for the future. Certainly, it should not be to make little academic wizards of the children. Instead, there should be devices to help children refine the needed essential skills in life, opportunity to improve their motor skills, be introduced to some of the basics of the academic world, learn about the community in which they live, and yet remain a young child in heart and soul. Alaska's Children's House gives you ideas for all these.

This historical novel is about transformative changes in a fictional family in first-century Judaea. It is set against the backdrop of the controversial ministry of an itinerant preacher and healer from Galilee, of an ambitious and opportunistic politician who will do anything to satisfy his own selfish desires, of a powerful occupation army that is determined to maintain peace on its own terms, and of the hopes and dreams of ordinary people in an ever-changing world. This is not a story about Jesus, as such, but it is about the everyday life of some of the hard-working people who could have been his neighbors, and about their struggle to understand the exciting, new teacher. The story contains elements of faith, love, community, conflict, justice, hope, and personal growth.

Bailen This well researched historical novel is a very enjoyable read. It tells the story of Eliezer and his family living in Galilee during the time of Jesus earthly ministry Reading this book is an awesome way to learn about life in 1st century Palestine. It also provides a picture of how Judaism was practiced in Jesus time. This provides a backdrop to Jesus teachings. Because the protagonist is a Pharisee, you can watch Eliezer struggle with how to incorporate Jesus teachings into his religion. Not only is Jesus ministry causing changes for Eliezer, but his family goes through other challenges as well. I look forward to more historical fiction from this author.

Lee If you wish a book about political intrigue, revolutions or revolts, this is not the read for you.Though set in a tumultuous time and place, it is a book not about the Christian Revolution or the Jewish Zealots or even the conflicts between the Roman occupation and those living in Judea. If you wish a book that immerses you in the Judaic traditions of a simple family, and the head of the family, Eliezer takes on his personal spiritual journey, then this might be the book for you. It is a book of family, friends, love, tradition and change. It is about God using the relationships in one family's live that changes them. What this book does very well is take the reader into the daily life of a simple Jewish family. The many rituals, practices, observances, festivals, traditions and daily remembrances remind us that to many Jewish families at that time, God was not a belief. God was not an afterthought. God was part of their rising in the morning, their meals, their night, their travels, their friendships, their celebrations. God was as intertwined in their lives as is the drawing of breath.Pair this with the father being a Pharisee and holding fast to those many traditions and laws, and you have the fertile but rocky ground upon which he must reconcile the beliefs he has learned with the teachings and practices, miracles and divinity of this Jesus and his ministry.Like many of us, he hears the stories second hand. He has never seen the crucifixion or resurrection himself. He has gone though thinking Jesus us just another voice among many, to a possible threat to the Jewish establishment, to a spiritual leader, and finally to believing he is the messiah. It is a trip many of us make in one form or another.Thomas Winn has written a great novel about the transformation of not only a simply Pharisee but of ourselves.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unique Historical Fiction By Judy A. Olson Set during the time of Jesus's ministry, this book describes the life of Eliezer, a Pharisee, and his son and daughter. The book shows how people of that time might have learned about Jesus, and how they may have reacted to that knowledge. The author, a long-time Biblical scholar, presents an authentic picture of how people lived at that time, as well as the relationship between the various factions in Roman occupied Judea. The central character must continuously reassess his strict application of the laws when dealing with the situations of his life. Along with the historical and religious ideas presented, the plot moves along with a dangerous adversary threatening the family. The parallel story of Jesus adds interest as well.Thomas Winn has written a unique historical fiction novel.

Americans are taught to believe that upward mobility is possible for anyone who is willing to work hard, regardless of their social status, yet it is often those from affluent backgrounds who land the best jobs. Pedigree takes readers behind the closed doors of top-tier investment banks, consulting firms, and law firms to reveal the truth about who really gets hired for the nation's highest-paying entry-level jobs, who doesn't, and why.

Drawing on scores of in-depth interviews as well as firsthand observation of hiring practices at some of America's most prestigious firms, Lauren Rivera shows how, at every step of the hiring process, the ways that employers define and evaluate merit are strongly skewed to favor job applicants from economically privileged backgrounds. She reveals how decision makers draw from ideas about talent--what it is, what best signals it, and who does (and does not) have it--that are deeply rooted in social class. Displaying the "right stuff" that elite employers are looking for entails considerable amounts of economic, social, and cultural resources on the part of the applicants and their parents.

Challenging our most cherished beliefs about college as a great equalizer and the job market as a level playing field, Pedigree exposes the class biases built into American notions about the best and the brightest, and shows how social status plays a significant role in determining who reaches the top of the economic ladder.

Review Co-Winner of the 2016 Silver Medal in Career (Job Search, Career Advancement), Axiom Business Book AwardsOne of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2015"Pedigree: How Elite Students Get Elite Jobs is an academic book with the requisite references to gender theory and Marxist concepts of inequality. But read it carefully and it becomes something far more useful--a guide on how to join the global elite."--Economist"[Rivera's] richly described account is mesmerising--and horrifying."--Gillian Tett, Financial Times"[Pedigree] provides an insider look at how top-notch places hire, and explores how their processes serve those with the most privileged and affluent backgrounds."--Bouree Lam, The Atlantic"Sociologist Rivera has written an exceptionally useful study of how hiring for elite starting jobs is actually done in the US. This insider study shows how the top investment banks, law firms, and consulting companies hire only from a double handful of leading universities, law schools, and business schools. . . . This significant sociological study will also likely be read as a how-to manual."--Choice

From the Back Cover

"In this riveting account of how the nation's top investment banks, consultancies, and law firms choose employees, Lauren Rivera goes inside the recruitment process, interviewing the interviewers and sitting in on their decision meetings. This eye-opening book exposes how the American elite keep the best jobs for themselves."--Frank Dobbin, author of Inventing Equal Opportunity

"Pedigree provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the hiring processes for elite jobs. Rivera's thoughtful ethnographic observations illuminate exactly how social class matters, and how the display of cultural skills can be crucial for job seekers to gain access to elite positions. It is an eye-opening book."--Annette Lareau, University of Pennsylvania

"Rivera identifies the myriad ways that class influences every stage of the hiring process at top-tier firms, showing how it is that individuals from affluent backgrounds have come to dominate the most elite segments of the American labor market. She pulls back the curtain time and time again, revealing how processes that are apparently class, race, and gender neutral are anything but."--Elizabeth A. Armstrong, coauthor of Paying for the Party: How College Maintains Inequality

"Pedigree sets a new standard of rigor for qualitative social-science research. Rivera shows how educational stratification in the United States is particularly pronounced and caste-like at the gateway to elite professions, and how the boundary between elite colleges and the elite firms that recruit from them is so fuzzy as to be only ceremonial."--Mitchell L. Stevens, author of Creating a Class: College Admissions and the Education of Elites

About the Author Lauren A. Rivera is associate professor of management and organizations at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

Excellent - 5 Stars By Chuan Zhang Pedigree is a thought provoking case study into hiring practices of what the author terms Elite Professional Services firms (EPS). From the viewpoint of someone interested in inequality, Rivera explains how choices in target campuses, interview structure (fit, polish), and choice to use revenue-generating staff to interview (vs HR) stack the deck against non traditional candidates. Alternatively, for a jobseeker, Pedigree is an amazing insight because it informs about systemic biases and specific techniques to overcome them. Despite having prepared extensively for a summer internship interview at an EPS, this guide provided much deeper understanding about the interview evaluation and hiring committee process. Finally, I was impressed with the quality of the research methodology (hands-on research, inductive coding, accounting for author's own background). I highly recommend Pedigree for people interested in equitable and effective hiring practices and MBA/law school students seeking EPS jobs.

The book certainly has received a lot of hype, most provocatively in the Economist (headline: "How to join the 1%"). I'm baffled, however, that Amazon is promoting "Pedigree" as "vocational guidance.""Pedigree" is not a "how-to" guide for joining elite firms. (Again, I'm not exactly sure why it's being promoted as such.) Rather, the book is an easy-to-read text that details/gives an overview of Rivera's research on hiring practices at a few investment banking, consulting and law firms. The insight the book offers is certainly not new for anyone familiar with these industries, but Rivera (heavily influenced by Bourdieu) offers a succinct, beautifully written sociological analysis of a world that is foreign to many -- and one that has not received much attention from academics.I found the book a pleasure to read, though I found Rivera's analysis slightly repetitive and her presentation of nontraditional candidates who succeeded in accepting offers (chapter 10) lacking. I do look forward, however, to following her work in the future, and I am impressed by her life story (from a single-parent home in L.A. to Yale to Northwestern's Kellogg). Overall, this is a great read for scholars/professionals/laypeople who are interested in exploring the state of our "meritocracy" and are excited by the growing publication of "popular" books about American educational inequality ("Our Kids;" "Privilege;" etc).

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Sheds new light on the gatekeepers of the 1% By Kimberly A. Verska A thought-provoking, well-researched analysis of the entry-level hiring process at the most elite employers in finance, law and business consulting -- one might even call them "the gatekeepers of the 1%." My husband and I are both part of the world described here (he in consulting and me in law), as we both managed to gate-crash our way in from non-elite family backgrounds. Having done our share of hiring committee work, we can vouch for a lot of the picture painted here.* However, the book's value derives not from the care taken in accurately describing the hiring process, but from the new light the author throws on the subject, even for those already familiar with this world.Rivera has done society a service by illuminating the unspoken norms against which all applicants to these top employers are judged. These norms, like the need to show participation in a team sport (or similar significant time commitment in a familiar group activity), or the ability to seize and hold the floor in a conversation about serious subjects, are unremarkable features of upper class life. However, they are not the natural outcomes of being raised in a poor family, and outside of attending a boarding school on a scholarship, there is nowhere you can go to learn them. So, although none of these norms overtly discriminate against applicants who are not rich, white Anglo-Saxons (though there are incidents of blatantly illegal discriminatory acts in the book too), their net effect is to largely screen out people whose lives do not resemble those of the wealthy. The book is worth reading in order to see this process in action, or for would-be applicants, even to structure your college years and take other non-obvious steps in preparation.*In terms of the particulars, in my experience, the picture for applicants from non-elite law schools is not as dire as described here. At both of the white-shoe firms where I worked, new associates were from a range of law schools in the top 50, plus local ones (though you still had to be in the top of your class outside of the elite schools). Of course, this was in Atlanta, not in NYC, so it is possible that the top dog firms in NYC only look at a few law schools.

2014 Outstanding Academic Title, Choice“What’s going on in this picture?”With this one question and a carefully chosen work of art, teachers can start their students down a path toward deeper learning and other skills now encouraged by the Common Core State Standards. The Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) teaching method has been successfully implemented in schools, districts, and cultural institutions nationwide, including bilingual schools in California, West Orange Public Schools in New Jersey, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.It provides for open-ended yet highly structured discussions of visual art, and significantly increases students’ critical thinking, language, and literacy skills along the way.Philip Yenawine, former education director of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and cocreator of the VTS curriculum, writes engagingly about his years of experience with elementary school students in the classroom. He reveals how VTS was developed and demonstrates how teachers are using art—as well as poems, primary documents, and other visual artifacts—to increase a variety of skills, including writing, listening, and speaking, across a range of subjects. The book shows how VTS can be easily and effectively integrated into elementary classroom lessons in just ten hours of a school year to create learner-centered environments where students at all levels are involved in rich, absorbing discussions.“You don’t have to convince me of the power art has to open the mind to new ways of seeing and thinking. More importantly it will describe the underpinnings of how to engage your students in critical thinking. This is so important to cultivate as a teacher in today's classroom. Using the Visual Thinking Strategies across the curriculum and getting real results in today's rigorous assessments provides powerful proof that this method has validity. This also addresses many of the Common Core Standards in ELA and Math. Marion Bageant, National Board Certified Teacher, Early Childhood Generalist. Second Grade Teacher, Spokane, WA

By Wendy Lukehart To read Visual Thinking Strategies is to enter into a companionable and substantive conversation with a master teacher who has spent a lifetime noticing and caring about how children learn. Yenawine's passion for nurturing growth across a variety of disciplines by tapping into young people's innate responsiveness to art is supported with research and a wealth of examples; his vision and method offer a provocative model for inspiring curiosity, motivation, critical thinking, and civil discourse in centers of formal and informal learning. Those grappling with the Common Core Standards will find Yenawine's ideas timely; in fact, they are timeless.--Wendy Lukehart, Youth Collections Coordinator, District of Columbia Public Library

The author describes the act of decision making and the process. Unfortunately such decisions that are described in this book happen in an instant within the decision makers mind. Common sense plays a large part of all decisions made by good leaders. All in all it is a good read for someone that is looking for such advice. Joseph D Pate

Some have no problem at all making personal decisions but seem unwilling or unable to make sound decisions in a work or business setting. The supposed decay in public education, whereby the United States is declining rapidly and falling behind other industrial nations, has been blamed on bad teaching and the lack of common and consistent standards. The solution to this supposed decay in public education is not only a common set of standards, but common tests that align with those standards. These tests are positioned as next generation assessments. Common Core: Passing the test? describes the development of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the accompanying next generation assessments. It questions whether America’s public school classrooms will be able to focus on enhancing student learning and authentic assessment or whether the classrooms will become even more focused on teaching to the test. Chapter 1 provides a brief review of the pathway and arrival of the CCSS on the nation’s agenda. It also details the initial development of the two primary assessment consortia through the federal government’s Race to the Top Assessment Program. Chapter 2 delves into the two assessment consortia, the “winners” of the Race to the Top Assessment Program, and reviews their articulated objectives and their means to achieve those objectives. The chapter also explores the role of for-profit entities lurking underneath the surface of all aspects of education reform. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the promises of the CCSS next generation assessments and explores the necessary conditions for schools to be able to implement next generation assessments, such as technology integration and professional development of teachers. Chapter 4 reviews the ways in which assessment in classrooms can truly become next generation by utilizing authentic and formative assessment methods. Chapter 5 explores the winners and losers of the Race to the Top. And the book concludes with a summation of the possible consequences of the continuation of the current path of education reform. Common Core: Passing the test? posits that the CCSS assessments and this next generation of school reform will perpetuate the engine of inequity and the existing social hierarchy. The audience for this book includes educators, policy-makers, decision-makers, and individuals concerned about the privatization of higher education and the continuation of policies and reforms that perpetuate social inequities in education.
